Position coaches seem to get that a assistant head coach designation a lot
 
It didn't seem to me that McVay had to give Barry that designation as teams weren't exactly kicking his door down to offer him a job.

But that's my view from the cheap seats, perhaps Barry WAS in fact in demand as a linebackers coach. He has had success there in Tampa and more importantly in San Diego, where the talent is nowhere near what he had with the Buccaneers.

You have to hand it to McVay.

For a 30 year old first-time head coach, Sean certainly hasn't shied away from making some firm, visible hires.

He snags Wade Phillips and then adds another coach that may have been miscast as a DC but could be a positive add as a position coach.

And that coach just happens to have been fired from his previous stop in Washington.

I wish the Redskins were as determinative and organized to make moves to round out the staff as some of these other teams have been.

Washington seems to be waiting to see which small bread crumb falls from the tree after the big birds have eaten so that we can pick up the morsels :mad:

With these defensive coaches finding other jobs and being tied into other HC candidates, NOW should be the time where McCloughan is able to go out there and find that position coach that would make a good COORDINATOR in his next stop.

There has to be more than one guy, Steve Wilks, that is an 'up and comer' on that side of the ball.

What about the current Chiefs' staff? What about one of the position coaches in Seattle?

Perhaps the Redskins are waiting to interview one of these potential candidates after their teams are knocked out of the playoffs, at least I certainly hope that is the case and we actually have a plan!

Don't want to simply be taking the last guy available when the music stops and people are looking for a chair to sit down.
 
Exactly. The Redskins seem like an observer on the sidelines as the game to lock down successful coaches goes on around them.

Reactive rather than proactive.

Again, unless the Redskins are looking for a position coach that is still in the playoffs and will interview him at some point this week, then this inaction on their part would seem to have some logic behind it.
 
The idea that the Redskins front office is sitting around with their thumbs up their asses, no clue, no plan, passively standing by while 'all the good DCs are gobbled up' - I think is a little silly. As for 'what's wrong with' the 2 guys we've interviewed - one's been out of football and isn't a 'hot commodity' partially because of that, the other actually has a choice and it's possibly prefers the Skins job over joining Lynn (rumors and conventional wisdom aside).

As with most things, it will be years if ever that we find out what the dynamics currently going on are or were.
 
The problem is whatever the 'inside' story, the 'outside' story continues to be this organization tripping over its own d*** on these kinds of decisions.

Rarely are we first off the board with a solid, well-received move.

We hired Haslett in 2010 despite his mediocre record as a DC. Then we had Barry who was a DC for one season for the 0-16 Lions.

Now we are looking at guys like Mike Pettine.

The reason I don't particularly want to hire Pettine is that he was working under Rex Ryan, who was the real architect of the defense the Jets ran.

Where you have a coach who works under a guy that is himself a specialist on that side of the ball you have to question what the assistant is going to do on his own.

Pettine to me moving on to Buffalo and then Cleveland was 'meh'.

Seems to me a big market team like the Redskins needing a coordinator would be able to use its resources to come up with a better candidate.

And that candidate doesn't have to be Gus Bradley either as I don't see him as a be-all, end-all solution either.
 
Current Twitter rumor is that Skins are looking at Ed Donatell as potential replacement at DC. Rumors all over the place. Chris Russell just threw out Rob Ryan's name :) Feel free to go apeshit.

I still think we are either waiting on Gus Bradley to make up his mind, or there's someone in the playoffs we have hopes for....

It makes sense we haven't heard about more dc "potential" names due to the playoffs. It's frustrating to not know who but that could be Mcluvs running a tight lipped ship.

It's a more comforting thought compared to jay not knowing wtf to do.

Wow, interviewing Ryan is a scary thought. He's been thrown out of more places then Haslett for cryin out loud.
 
Reporting that Ryan interview has already happened. Next up for DC interview is Jason Tarver (Raiders DC 2012-14, currently 49ers LB coach). Gents - we are either really bored waiting for dream candidate to finish in the playoffs, or we are scraping the proverbial bottom of the bucket.

Please Dan, offer Romeo Crennel triple his current salary and throw some hookers at him - whatever it takes.
 
Rob Ryan interview was just to satisfy the Rooney rule one fat slob per vacancy
