I dont like signing DT's who overperform in contract years, they tend to get complacent. especially guys who have already done it once. that said, this is a two way win we removed one of the cowpies better players and improved our interior line depth, I think a rotation of hatcher and cofield inside with baker playing a tech and rak and kerrigan coming off the edge would be sweet. but we need linebackers to make it work now

it will be interesting to see if haslett can actually scheme, because hatcher and cofield have both been solid 3 tech players elsewhere and have high motors, Baker is a big guy but we had him playing end, im not certain he can hold up at NT but one can hope. and yeah that deal is a solid one if we can get some solid years out of him for sure.

The problem with Hatcher is that he had his best year in a 4-3 defense. He was average at best in the 3-4 Dallas played before this so my advice is not to get hugely excited about this signing.

Prior to 2013 he had 16 sacks in 7 seasons as a 3-4 DE. You do the math.

Since when, Mike? Last year we stood Rak and Kerrigan up on the ends and had Bowens, Cofield and Jenkins with their hands in the dirt, Colfield over the Center. Sounds like a 3-4 to me.

And Gruden has said he wants to stick with the 3-4 this year.

We ran a LOT of 4-3 last year. If anything, keeping Hatcher and cutting Bowen (most likely) are signs that we are going to run even more this season. Might have to, out of necessity - especially if we can't get another solid MLB.

Im hoping that its a sign we are going to get the best players possible and then put them in the best position possible, if indeed we stay 3-4 then I will be extremely unhappy

And Gruden has said he wants to stick with the 3-4 this year.

Gruden has also said, or is at least rumored to be of the belief that he will make the schemes fit the player's individual strengths, as opposed to force players into the coaches' predetermined scheme, regardless of their strength.

So....sticking with the 3-4, with the roster that we have, totally contradicts with that concept and theory.

Imagine for a moment what our DL would be like, if it consisted of Orakpo, Hatcher, Cofield, Kerrigan.
We would be UN....STOPPABLE.....and it wouldn't matter if Ryman and Lanky were our OLB's

No Fear, we wouldn't be unstoppable. If I were the opposition OC I would run at Kerrigan all day long. He is just too light to play LDE in the NFL.

Not out of a base, but last year over 60 percent of our snaps on defense were in nickle with 4 down lineman.

Prior to 2011 Hatcher had only started one game. In the three years he was a starter he had 4.5, 4.0 and 11 sacks. I'm pretty ok with those numbers from the DT position.

Here are Hatcher's contract details-

His four-year, $27.5 million contract would make it tough for the Redskins to cut him early in the deal. But considering he's coming off an 11-sack season it's hard to imagine them wanting to do so.

But if Hatcher's effectiveness wanes after two years? The Redskins are OK if they want to cut him and get out of the deal.

Hatcher received a $9-million signing bonus and has $10.5 million guaranteed. There's no guaranteed money after the first year and with his base salary escalating by a considerable amount in the third year, the Redskins could cut him and he would count $4.5 million against the cap (unless they can spread it out over two years at $2.25 million per). It's hard to imagine Hatcher getting to that final season considering his cap hit would be hefty for a player who would be 35 entering the season. But if he's still playing well? Different story.

But I think Kerrigan is the least of our worries up there. And I'm offering you my burgundy colored opinion =)

WE didn't see a hell of a lot of it during the season, but in the preseason, we were working a lot with moving Kerrigan around... Could be fun to have two players that can play inside or outside, and bouncing Rack from one side to the other from time to time. We could have a nice rotation to keep offenses guessing where the pressure is coming from when you add in Cofield and company. I expect to see a bit more of a hybrid D up front this season. Haz showed a glimpse of things he wanted to do last off season, and now he has full control.

actually if you play an over and under front you play with one light and one heavy end, we call them the rush who plays the short side of the field and the base who plays the wide side, the base end is usually a stouter bigger guy, and the rush is smaller and faster, if guys like freeney can play DE im certain that Kerrigan could as well, Rak would be a straight up beast if used right in a 4-3 as well, and we could use kerrigan as more of a situational rusher on 3rd and long and a run down OLB.
