Tracking the Trenches

I actually do hope Griffin doesn't get killed. I actually hope the line pulls a miracle and plays well.

He's got me there....

Gee - does anyone think having a brand new OL coach (one of the best in the NFL btw) might result in different thoughts, approaches, and possibly even changes in the plan? I know, crazy right??!!

One thing is certain. The talk of having a weak OL is a thing of the past. Toss in the best OL coach in the bizz (and he will be calling some plays this season) and we have the recipe for a new-found strength.

In previous seasons the starters were set early on. How did that work out?

Personally I like mixing things up. In all honesty, I DON'T want Scherff to think his job is safe. Nobody should. Draft status means nothing come September, something this team has completely lost sight of over the last couple decades. How about Scherff plays the position that he executes the best. Line him up at TE if he's got more speed and better hands then Reed. If the combo of Moses at RT and Scherff at G is a better combo then the two switched, then so be it. If Moses shows a weakness against larger interior linemen, and has shown to be better suited at defending against the outside rush, then he should be playing outside. Scherff isn't the only peice to this puzzle, so judging ONLY Scherff in this situation is unfair, the overall unit of the O-Line is the most important part to be focusing on.

Some Keim observations, noting that practice was in shells and not full speed.
Galette sighting as well at the link.
Sounds like our baby bull is still getting some schooling from the vets... a good thing

End Stephen Paea’s strength/quickness have shown up this week in the one-on-ones. Got inside Brandon Scherff on a rush and the second time he beat Scherff with his hands inside. Later, Scherff did a nice job riding him out, but Paea stayed with the rush and was hard to slow.

Have to say, one of the better linemen blocking in the one-on-one drills Tuesday was guard Shawn Lauvao. Worked very hard to keep his hands in tight versus end Jason Hatcher and it enabled Lauvao to win each time. Left tackle Trent Williams also excelled by keeping his hands in tight versus Ryan Kerrigan to stop his bull rush.

Even second-year player Spencer Long was better with his hands, stopping Chris Baker, who then tapped the guard on the helmet.

You're back at this again?!

You just said the exact same thing in another thread tr1. You have a right to be ridiculously negative, but lets stop spamming with it. Saying it 4 times doesn't make it more valid - it's the equivalent to speaking louder because a non-English speaker can't understand you :)

If you are truly miserable then be miserable. Trying to make everyone else miserable by doing this day in and out is not cool at all.

No, it isn't. Because all you do is say the same stuff over and over. No matter what it's always this.

I remember how funny it was on ES watching you piss off iggles and cowbum fans. You'd come in and talk this same shit and they'd get all fired up. But now you're doing it to us and it's not cool. At all.

"Ridiculously negative"...hmmm...okay.

Non valid? Okay.

I can change.

We're going to be the best team in the league...some day.

McCloughlan is God. Sorry, I didn't see that before.

Dan? Best owner in the league.

Gruden? He's all done with his rookie mistakes.

Allen? Let's keep winning off the field.

Better?

No - you're being an ass :)

I consistently defend every members right to post their opinion, no matter what it is, as long as they are civil. But posting the same thing over and over, particularly to get a rise out of others, that's not contributing to the discussion. The snark is what people respond negatively to. And honestly, it's not necessary.

You know the old song,

I never promised you a rose garden.

Part of being a fan is manning up and taking your medicine. I know it's hard because I am one. But there will be better days - it's the nature of time and history and even Beelzebub as owner can't change that.

I don't believe McCloughan is infallible. I don't think Niles Paul is suddenly a Pro Bowler. I don't know if Griffin can resurrect his career. I have zero idea if Joe Barry can even coach. But there have been some positive developments. There are lots of us that have some skepticism bit not being open to even the idea that things can change for the better and improve before even a snap - it's not intellectually honest.

Maybe you need to turn the "realness" down a notch. Most of us don't buy it and are tired of it.

It isn't your place to ruin it just because you think it's "syrupy". As much as you harp about being allowed to express yourself, so are we.

tr1,

The only thing I take issue with is your insistence on repetition. Everyone knows you think the team "whiffed" on the #5 pick. We've known it for several days, as you have gone from thread to thread saying the same thing over and over. Several people have offered counter-arguments that you have simply ignored.

It's okay to disagree on stuff. It's really not okay to know something has been discussed and vetted thoroughly, know it's become a hot button topic that has been exhausted and is now causing only discord, yet keep saying the same thing over and over as if every time is the first. If you're unable to understand why that is divisive, and that it's time to let it go at some point, then maybe you really aren't in the right place?

You're a smart guy--it comes through when you let it--and truth is we'd hate to lose you, as we would any long-time member and contributor, but brother, you gotta be willing and able to grok when enough is enough.

I value Tr1's posts. I may the only one, but I enjoy reading them, ESPECIALLY this time of year. They provide a nice balance to the optimism so pervasive at the start of every season. I don't think he is screwing with anyone trying to remind us all that this organization has been a cluster**** for the last twenty years with precious few exceptions. And he is right that every year changes are made, changes to distract us and make us optimistic again so we ignore the real problem: the dysfunction of the organization that will prevent us from winning consistently until that dysfunction is fixed.

I don't begrudge him sounding that bell over and over and over and over because it's true. He's not wrong.

The point where I part ways with him is that the future is hopeless. For the first time since Beatherd(?) we have a real football GM, not one of Dan's crony's or an ego-inflated head coach managing the team. That is HUGE. Did Scot make a mistake with Scherff? I dunno, maybe. Way too soon to tell, though I understand Tr1's perspective on it, and I get why he would say it. I disagree with that assessment right now, but time may prove him correct. Scot may have made a mistake. Well, he's going to make more mistakes, we all need to get used to that. Outside of Ax, no one is perfect. That's OK. Scot making a mistake (if I concede the point, which I don't, but for the purposes of this argument) is NOT an indication of organizational dysfunction, imo. It's an indication that our OLine sucked balls last year (cough, McD, cough) and Scot was desperate to fix it, no matter what the perceived cost. I'm cool with that too, because our OLine was wretched last year.

Anyway, I hope Tr1 continues to post here, I like his takes. I don't mind the repetitiveness. I don't agree with him all the time, but he challenges me to think about the big picture sometimes, and I'm cool with that.

Tr1 keeps me from being the most pessimistic person on this board, so there's that. :)

I dunno, as someone who rarely sees any bright spots these days I just try and keep most of it to myself. Sure, I'll vent now and then, but for the most part once I've said my piece I move on. It's not like anyone here is going to stop being optimistic because I'm not.

Regarding this specific issue. I tend to see everything in the worst light these days but I just don't see the big deal about Scherff playing guard. Picking him at 5 was an odd pick in April. We all knew it. It doesn't become more odd because they are moving him around. The kid isn't exactly Andre Johnson yet. Ask me at the end of the year what I think of the pick.

Personally, tr1's posts don't make me miserable. Another's opinion can't do that. If it could, that would be my problem not theirs.
