Screaming constituents, protesters dragged out by the cops, congressmen fearful for their safety — welcome to the new town-hall-style meeting, the once-staid forum that is rapidly turning into a house of horrors for members of Congress.

On the eve of the August recess, members are reporting meetings that have gone terribly awry, marked by angry, sign-carrying mobs and disruptive behavior. In at least one case, a congressman has stopped holding town hall events because the situation has spiraled so far out of control.

“I had felt they would be pointless,” Rep. Tim Bishop (D-N.Y.) told POLITICO, referring to his recent decision to temporarily suspend the events in his Long Island district. “There is no point in meeting with my constituents and [to] listen to them and have them listen to you if what is basically an unruly mob prevents you from having an intelligent conversation.”

In Bishop’s case, his decision came on the heels of a June 22 event he held in Setauket, N.Y., in which protesters dominated the meeting by shouting criticisms at the congressman for his positions on energy policy, health care and the bailout of the auto industry.

What will be curious to see is if these political figures will actually make decisions based on what their constituents are telling them or if they will follow the Democratic leadership and ignore these few "unruly" individuals. .

Of course they won't. You think a bunch of rubes who can't even be bothered to read a bill of their own making actually care what people think?

Sarge, I just don't understand what these buffoons are thinking. The quickest way to lose their jobs is to ignore their constituents!

They have a super majority now. They want to get as much socialist crap implemented as they can before the next elections. Afterwards, they won't care if they get re-elected or not because they'll already have their foot in the door of the new programs and be in a postion to profit from them

Meanwhile, we'll be stuck with the bill

Forever

Interesting. I think much of the problem with the current opposition to healthcare reform is a combination of two things, a failure to fully explain what reform entails and an infantile and naiive electorate easily manipulated by code words like socialized medicine and scare tactics. Here is the cold hard reality of the situation. Either we fix the system now or it will break down of its own bloated costs and in ten years the vast majority of the populace will be demanding true socialized medicine. If we do it right today we've got a shot at fixing things such that we keep the best aspects of our current system while bringing in the things that the Europeans/Canadians do well.
