This is not a Joke

It doesn't look wise from your point of view. Problem is, neither of us are behind the scenes, and know what the staff is thinking. I look at it as Rak being gone next season. Unless he's in the top 5 for OLB's, I don't see the team breaking the bank to keep him, and he's looking for big money. As you said, Jackson is no slouch, but if we didn't pick up Murphy, who's behind Jackson. The quality drops off quickly... and Rak has missed a lot of time due to injuries. The team has pretty much said Rak has to prove himself publicly, and he's said he has nothing to prove. It doesn't ring with a healthy tone to me. Right now, we have two servicable safeties, and at least one potentially long term answer on the roster. The better we are up front, the less the secondary will be exposed, and that seems to be the mindset of the staff.

if the staff truly believes Rak is gone next season.....it makes no sense to me to keep him at franchise player cost especially if you draft someone you believe is an equal or better replacement. the insurance argument may have currency in the media...but it doesn't make economic sense.

if the staff believe he is gone...why is he here? the prove himself worthy of truly big bucks argument doesn't cut it IMO.....cuz then the draft argument (a wasted pick) vis Murphy really is true.

2nd round contracts do not cost that much...

I'm pretty certain that fs62 was not referring to Murphy's contract, but rather Orakpo's contract, when he was talking about the scenario that fans are speculating on "not making economic sense" : by paying Orakpo franchise money to stick around for just one year, if indeed they don't plan to keep him beyond that, and plan for Murphy to replace him - as so many fans are assuming.

I can't look at it from a purely financial standpoint. There's so many factors that we don't know about. Timing has a bit to do with it. We had to make a decision on Rak before the draft, long before we ever knew we would be drafting Murphy. Again, Jackson could take that spot, which I wouldn't have had a problem with, but quality depth is thin. Keeping Rak, even at the tag price gives the staff some breathing room. Rak has good trade value if it comes down to it, and if Murphy develops quickly, it give us a very good option, while keeping the level of play up at the position.

It would be great if this stuff was black and white, as many seem to view it as. It's not...

I sensed a Jim Hasnot bashing, so I came to drop some numbers......

21 - The average rank of JH defenses throughout his entire career, when you remove the two years he inherited a previously top ranked defense and decimated them with his ineptitude.

14 - The amount of takeaways his defense has averaged per season throughout his career. The NFL average over that same time span? 28 per team. Yep, his defenses take the ball away exactly half as much as the average NFL team.

37 - The average amount of TD his defenses give up each year. The league average last season? 37. Why is this hilarious? There were more TD scored last season than any season in NFL history. No coach should be anywhere near that number unless they're a rookie.

0 - The total number of championships an NFL team has won while Jim Haslett was a member of the coaching staff.

7 - Average victories per season a team has with JH on the staff.

$50,000,000+ - Career earnings for being a complete failure and lingering near the bottom of the league among all coaches for nearly two decades. Depressing, isn't it?

It just means the league is catching up with him, and the talent he possesses

Haslett is junk, the murphy pick was a wasted pick, even if he comes in and plays well, hes an OLB on a team where our two best players on Defence are OLB's on a defence where our safety play has been hot garbage for a decade other than ST21. Clarke was let go because he wanted more than we wanted to pay for an average safety. Ill be amazed if the defence does much better than bottom average, but we were so bad last year that any improvement will likely be a sop for people who dont get how easy it is to put together a solid d.

Clark*

Your positivity is amazing. We've missed you here

Average safeties to not last as full time starters on a perennial top five defense for eight years. Clark was let go because our front office had stars in their eyes and wanted Adam Archuletta at ten times the price, a guy who played fewer GAMES for the Redskins 31st ranked defense than SEASONS Clark played for an elite Steeler defense.

If you are suggesting Clark is average NOW, well, I don't think anyone disagrees with you. We didn't pay more than average for him, though. And 'average' is a huge upgrade over the drek we've had over the past couple years. He can hold down the spot until we find a replacement.

All that said, I'm no fan of Haslett. It's mind-boggling that he still has a job here.

It's mind-boggling that he still has a job here.

Isn't it just our typical Redskins' luck, that we fire Shanahan, with the hopes of starting afresh, but the new coach we hire, ALSO has a coaching history and connection with Haslett, just like Shanahan did ?

What are the chances ???

So, it's not mind-boggling that he still has a job here. The reason is obvious. What's mind-boggling is the circumstances and bad luck that created the reason he's still here.

Yesterday is gone. Prepare for tomorrow.

That's easy to say now, but the question is, whether Ax can say that, if Kai Forbath gets cut in favor of rookie Zach Hocker

addendum:

El's thought on second rounders being affordable cast-ways cuz they're cheaper (I know....taking some liberties here!) got me to thinking. here's what I think might really be going on: the Skins are going to either extend RGIII toward the end of this season or into next season. whenever...it's going to cost an arm and a leg (no pun intended!)...especially if we forge a formidable run this season. seems to me the decision has quietly been made to throw the financial high end chips in with the offense. defense? we're shooting for lower cost (through youth and older vets at discounts). Murphy makes more sense in this context.....Rak is as good as gone next season regardless IMO.

once the bills for Robert come due....the financial picture changes for the worse. or, rather, it forces many more difficult trade-offs. I think we're already seeing the strategy being laid down.

What did he pop positive for Weed or Coke?

There should be a PSA showing drug dealers selling individual joints for a years salary. And show it to incoming rookies and loser Vets like our ex safety.

Don't think it was any of the 'recreational' drugs, unless one considers PED's as recreational.
