I would argue that it started prior to the 'lone constant.' However, he has not helped in the past decade.

I think we drafted alright in the 90s. We just never found a quarterback and had a wet noodle for a head coach.

A lot of great thoughts here but I keep thinking one thing . . . how many of those guys would have panned out in a Redskins uni? I think their success is as much about going to a healthy, well run organization as it is about the player themselves. My guess is that those same names in Burgundy and Gold would not have had the careers they have had.

I disagree, we had our worst and hugest busts in the nineties, that fat olineman from penn state who never played a down, heath " my god im athletic too bad I never learned how to play qb" shuler and Desmond " but im good at returns" Howard.all high firsts, all huge busts.

Some of them certainly. But I think the time that Gibbs was here would have stabilized some of their careers a great deal. The more I think about it, the more I think that Gibbs added to and strengthened his legacy a great deal in his second time around.

We just didn't know it at the time.

while I prefer a draft first strategy...the options are obviously limited there...so this is good news on many levels:

1) suggests Shanahan is in it for the longer haul

2) FA pool is supposed to be among the best ever this off-season

3) we can use all the help we can get!!!

So long as we stop giving away draft picks, free agency can be a very sound strategy. I have a feeling though that Shanahan/Allen/Danny may go nuts...

The good news is that we don't give up draft picks for FAs.

True, but I assume that by FAs, we aren't considering RFAs. Too pricey, draft pick-wise.

Mike - you are correct, these kinds of what if games are pointless, there isn't a FO in the league you can't embarrass by doing this to them. But the point the author is making, that I agree with, is that you need your draft picks. If drafting is a complete crapshoot, a 50:50 proposition at best, you need man more draft picks than we have made a habit of holding onto to make aure you minimize the misses. Think about it, if we have four to five picks each year, at a 50% success rate, we will get 2-2.5 keepers. Now look at the Eagles and Pats who have 10-12 every year ( or at least it seems that way). They are literally doubling the serviceable players they add at reasonable contracts every year compared to us. Not great.

And Bird, yeah, i would like to ignore the restricted Fa market myself, giving up draft picks and all but it would ot shock me to see us dip our toes in. Again.

lotta working parts in all of this. you know...you and I have been critical of Shanny......but at the end of the day I think we keep him until all H breaks loose. the key is having the eye for talent that fits the system - and keeping to the system. can't do that with a revolving door for a coaching staff. another way of saying the skill isn't in uncovering the uber players...it's finding the players who prosper in the system (and if they happen to be super athletes...well all the better!).

I bet we hold common ground in believing Shanahan needs to stay out of the defensive end of talent evaluation. it is problematic, as you say, because he created some of the chaos by switching schemes when the talent was't there. question is...what do we do next season? if the 3-4 is here to stay...who is trusted to find the right people to make it run?

Good points FS, especially about defensive players, it seems as though Allen was brought in to manage the salary cap, while Shanny is the talent evaluator. Couldn't be happier about that when it comes to the O-Line and RBs, but less than thrilled about the defense. At least we have Haslett.

exactly FS and Goal, I am ok with Shanny looking after the O even after some of his less than stellar moves, but his defence needs help, if we stay 3-4 we had better bring in someone who actually gets it.

well...Allen is doing his job then.

we do know this: a team can be turned around within a year or two if the folks at the top are both smart and decisive (see B-more). I'm frankly out of good ideas when it comes to the defense. I think the Skins are gonna have to decide pretty soon which side of the ball they want to groom into championship material first.

while I love defense most.....this offense has been frustrating for so long I vote go "all in" on O and fix it. we're just gonna have to be patient with the D next season.
