The Work Thread

I've been away from this forum for a while and lost track but it seems like everybody's doing well. At least I hope so!

Just got back from an alleged vacation turned business trip. I've decided to leave Los Angeles and head back to South Florida. I just accepted a job on a much larger vessel based out of Fort Lauderdale. Its rough and a lot of work, but instead of just a paycheck it will allow me to advance my licensing rather quickly. 1 year there will do more than 3 more out here. So its a kind of a no-brainer. Sad that I didn't get to see everything I wanted to out he in LaLa land but can definitely say I saw as much as was possible (on land.)

I refit this yacht virtually by myself and kept my end of the bargain between myself and the owners. I worked hard and could coast for the next two years collecting handsome paychecks with little labor. That's not me. Its been for sale for a year and they haven't budged on the asking price when myself and several other yacht brokers explained that its real value is half of the asking price. That gap is so wide that they are not taking me seriously. I worked my ass off for them so that they could sell it and now they are just being greedy. I was also overlooked to replace the crew on their other yacht on the east coast which royally pissed me off. So, peace out. Was nice while it lasted.

Tentative plans have me cruising the southern Caribbean for most of the upcoming summer. We tow a brand new 36' boat to fish and dive off of and oh yeah, the owners are from NC, which I find I can really relate to them. Hard working people who made their money by working, not just handed down from Daddy or Mama or Grandaddy or Grandmama. Getting along with the owners is one of the hardest parts in this business, I've spent over 10 hours on the phone with the new people over the last week and its SOOOOOO much more pleasant than any conversation with the current owners I work with ever was......ever.

On a side note I reconnected with my ex over the past few months and things albeit unexpectedly, are progressing slowly and looking up right now on that front.

Haven't really had any time or patience lately to devote to our team or my family here for that matter but even if we're not "facebook friends" or any of that garbage know this: I feel like this place is family and can't thank everyone here for allowing me to share my life with you, and thank you for sharing glimpses into your lives as well. I'm not always warm and fuzzy but you all mean a lot to me.

OK rant over, that's my update, see you on the right side soon enough. Peace out .

Kevin

Let me know if you stop in Texas on the way back! We can hit up some barbecue.

Right back at you brother - you've always been a core member here and we're glad you joined us here way back them. Selfishly glad you'll be an east coaster again - that means maybe you can make our tailgate game next time around :)

Hail yes!!!! Congrats man!

So we have to know, did your buddy get one also, or did you beat him out?

Thanks guys! I'm not sure, but I dont think he did, at least not yet. I'm going to wait a bit before I tell him, I feel kind of bad because he is a great guy and is extremely good at what we do. He texted me earlier today and was still hopeful.

I'm going to give my contract employer, who has been wonderful to me, a chance to bring me on perm and for more money than this one is offering too. I dont think they will be able to but who knows.

Compared to the last few months, life is grand again and I am so very blessed to be in this situation.

Thanks you, Thank You, Thank You all my Redskins brethren (and sisteren?) for the incredible love and support you have shown me here through one of the most scary and difficult times of my life.

I'm grateful more than words can describe for you.

Welcome back to the neighborhood, DM.

Congrats on your offer, SS. Quite the lesson in perseverance there.

My friend still feels that he was the choice and they suddenly changed their minds. He hasn't even considered that he misread things in his final interview, which should have been reassessed once he knew I was getting another conversation with the SVP and he wasn't.

I have been, but he's a little bummed and still sends me texts about it here and there. Im actually trying to get him to replace me in the contract gig.

You guys should never have been comparing notes. Hard enough competing against a friend without comparing notes the whole way through. He's a big boy. Could just as easily been you on the outside looking in. There's no reason to feel bad for him and he needs to grow a pair and man up.

Yeah, in hindsight, it ended up pretty awkward for both of us. It all started because we were using each other as references. One of the strange things that happens with a large local layoff I suppose. We probably should have made the deal to not communicate on this one until all was said and done. I'd do things differently if I had the chance for a do-over.

That said....I am darned happy it ended up this way anyway!!!! LOL!

Happy for you and I'm sure it will work out for your friend as well.

As soon as he finds a job he'll get over it. You'll just have to deal with the awkwardness between now and then. Sucks, but losing your job and being unemployed for any meaningful duration can have unexpected affects on people.

Happy for you though.

For whatever reason I felt like taking shots of my desk today and posting them.

I have no window in my office :( It make me sad, but it's my first office (have always worked in big open rooms before)

I can't stand florescent light 8 hours a day, so I leave my lights off. My door is open, light comes in that way, and there's a a window from the office next door into mine (it's way up top so we can't actually see each other, it just lets light in)

It's probably total 12ft x 12 ft. I didn't take a picture of the rest of it because it's just boxes. We sublet, and the company we sublet from puts their filing boxes in my office for whatever reason. Doesn't bother me.

One day I'll have a window. One day.

It's very basic. Nothing on the walls. This was supposed to be a temporary home for us and we've now been here almost a year and a half. At this point I think I might start hanging stuff on the walls (redskins stuff of course) since it seems like we'll be here for a while.

Pretty much been working since 8 AM friday. Disaster recovery situation, on a 3 hour break while stuff runs. Had a few breaks, was able to sleep all night, but otherwise been working since 8 am yesterday.

sucks. had to cancel my birthday dinner with friends last night, couldn't work on the house at all today, and probably going to be up until 2 or 3 am tonight.

*sigh*

finally up.
now i get to fix all the crap that is broken. yay. only midnight.

at least my boss sent me a nice pick me up email
Nice work this weekend.

Now go through it with a fine tooth comb and try to make sure we don't have any surprises on Monday.

Finally done.
1:30 isn't too bad, i figured I'd be lucky to be in bed by 2.

**** you computer gods.
