Yep. You can’t underestimate the number of citizens who are against this on principle. Public $$$ going to billionaires is a non-starter for a lot of people, details be damned. Especially for the non football fans, they just don’t see the benefit of a stadium even if they’re being told it’s a solid investment for the city. People don’t just accept the word of billionaires and politicians when they are told it’s a good investment, they only want to look at where else the money could be spent instead. This is why we no longer play in DC and also why Harris failed to get his downtown arena for the 76ers in Philly.

Hate to say it, but I do think this deal is in grave danger.

Then the team should go over their heads. The Feds did not give the City control of that prime real estate in the heart of the Nation’s Capital to build “affordable” housing.

I don’t know if the feds have the power to override the council on this, but if so then yes that would probably be the better avenue to get this done. Have to wonder why they didn’t just do that in the first place though if that’s the case.

They wanted to do it “the right way”

Hard to convince people who think townhomes are a better deal than an NFL stadium with commercial development though.

No doubt In 30 years everybody will be talking about all the glorious townhomes that sit on the RFK property and all the revenue and good will they brought D.C. :dizzy2:

It'll be the same people crowing about how good the Native Americans have it now that we're no longer the Redskins. All their problems have been solved!

Honestly, in general, I’m not sure I disagree with this in a lot of cases. NFL owners are billionaires. They take in money hand over fist on their teams and the teams appreciate in value super quickly. Why should someone making 50k a year make sacrifices so that the billionaires don’t have to pay for the stadium they are making all of that money off of.

But that’s not what’s happening here. The commanders are paying for the stadium. The city is paying for investments in the actual city itself. Roads. Metro stops.

DC would have to do that anyway. And the actual citizens will also benefit from roads and metro stops.

It IS just political grand standing. Or, people that only see in black and white and can’t assess facts and nuance, for what they are, if the facts disagree with their ideology.

I have a political stance that I’m not going to discuss here. But, I really, really, hate that kind of behavior on both sides. If the facts dictate a change in what you think, fucking change what you think. Don’t just cling to it because it’s what you thought before.

The feds gave DC the rights to the land. Especially I. This climate, they can take those rights away. They can also create a budget hell for DC super easily.

I misunderstood your post. I honestly can see both arguments about the name. I’m pretty agnostic about it. I understand the objection. I’d be perfectly happy if it were still the name.

It just gets tedious rehashing the name stuff. It’s not coming back. The team is good. The QB, the coaches, the GM and scouting, the owner. The branding is better. It sucks to keep harping on the negative. Nobody here likes/likes the name, ‘Commanders’. But we have a ton to be really happy about. How many teams I. The league have as much as we have to be excited about?

About the stadium, the council is ridiculous. Just like most of politics is ridiculous.. The stadium makes sense. If someone offered me that kind of deal I. My personal life. I’d jump at it without hesitation. Sometimes people are inclined to cut off their nose to spite their face. Totally illogical.

...but the same type of self-righteous politicking and grandstanding is always there. What these nitwits ignore is the bill contains provisions to build houses, parks and other public facilities...

How 'bout as part of the deal, we allow a native tribe to operate a casino on the grounds?
Then we could appeal to the:
lottery/gambling crowd (57% of DC population,)
The Commanders fans (19-67% of DC population depending on weather, our record and Sam Hartthrob.)
the Great American Apologists (1.2% of population but noisy and annoying AF,)
and Those who don't give a rats ass about yet another bunch of townhomes. (89% of rational thinkers)

C'mon, Who wants to hit the craps table before kickoff?
