The Sky is not Falling Thread

Jayden needs to trust Luke and Lane especially more than 10 yards down the field or the Cowboys will all be in the box. I am also hoping Sinnott and perhaps Bates are in the game plan this week

Yeah I agree. The positions we need to fix aren’t hard to find. I think we need a TE1, WR2, DE2, ILB, starting corner and at least one starting safety.

If we really wanted to do, we can go fill all these roles in free agency (not saying we do that or should do that).

To your point, my bigger worry is who they bring in as the next DC. When I look ahead, I don’t think there are going to be many experienced names out there and none I can think of with ties to DQ.

Jonathan Gannon, local guy Dennard Wilson, ???. Aaron Glenn may get fired but I never thought he actually had good defenses in Detroit and was way overrated.
I think its a WR1 as i don't expect McLaurin will ever pass 800 yards in a season again. Also a DE1 as while Armstrong has been pretty good, he is not a game wrecker, we need one of those! Then another CB as we have Amos and Sainristil, but thats about it back there. Then we need a safety to replace Quan Martin as he has regressed badly from a promising season (not a great one) and Harris will be coming back from injury and a 1 year rental, so both safeties really. And TE1 for sure, Ertz is showing his age and it doesn't look like they trust Sinnott as a WR at all . . . we really don't need two bates, not that having our 3rd TE being also a blocking one is a horrible thing, but we need more WR capabilities from that position. Then Deebo will be gone as he is going to want more than the FO wants to pay and they don't seem to trust McCaffery at all, so a WR3 as well. Not sure on ILB as i do think McGee looks pretty good, i think we need to see more of him and less Wagner, especially in passing situations so that we can effectively evaluate McGee.

And YES, new DC as Whitt is in way over his head . . . but i think Quinn is too loyal and we will be stuck with in once again next year at least.

Take a look at my breakdown in the FA thread

I'm not happy that is for damn sure. But I'm also a Stevie Ray fan. So maybe the sky is not falling but...

The sky is crying
Can you see my tears roll down the street?

That was one of Jayden’s issues his first year at LSU. His inability to trust Malik and Brian Thomas. Was extremely frustrating, but hey he learned from it and the next season voila.

There is a lot to be positive about with this team.

The leadership is good. Harris saving us from Snyder is huge, Adam Peters has done well with personnel, and DQ is beloved by the players. Those guys plus a franchise QB in Jayden bode well for us in the long run. I expect us to have a consistently competitive team, an improved brand, and a new stadium in the coming years. We have suffered for long enough, and there is light at the end of the tunnel.

As for players other than Jayden, the roster has a lot to like. The rebuilt offensive and defensive lines both look strong, and winning the line of scrimmage is so important. We have exciting young prospects in LMC, JCM, Amos, Lane, and Sinnott. We have real talent in Terry, Deebo, Luvu, and Bates. We have reliable vets in Wagner, Ertz, Way, and Reaves.

I genuinely love our players and coaches, and the vibes have been really good. Deebo was wearing a Bill T-shirt a couple weeks ago, and you see that kind of thing with this team, guys celebrating and supporting each other, players happy to be here, fans back in the seats, and so on. That is actually a big part of my disappointment, I really hate to see a group I love so much fail so miserably. I had a similar feeling in 2006. It’s just a bummer.

I think a lot of that failure is due to injuries, so hopefully we get healthy and get right. We will need to beat the odds to get back in the hunt, but that’s just the kind of thing we did last season, so there is still hope.

The sky isn’t falling but they’re not a playoff team. Not even close.

That’s just how seasons go sometimes. It sucks but this one just never got off the ground. Still think they took the right approach to roster building in the offseason but that’s just the way things have gone. It doesn’t help the NFC is really good all of a sudden either.

We’re going to have a lot of seasons though and this is now a competent organization. This isn’t some huge catastrophic event where the brain trust did moron things that haunt them long term. Sure, they swing and missed on some things (Lattimore) and some important draft picks haven’t panned out, but they’ve got the big things right.

The ownership group wants to win and appear to be legitimately helpful rather than meddling.

The front office is packed with actual professional talent.

So is the coaching staff (though Whitt is a goner).

The books are clean as a whistle from a future cap perspective. And by that I mean, they didn’t tie up future cap dollars in players that wont be contributing.

They have a franchise Quarterback.

The offensive line is maybe really good.

Amos is probably good enough to be the top corner on a really good defense if they can build one.

This is all incredibly fixable. A new DC is mandatory but they have a bunch of the crucial things already locked down. This year just isn’t gonna be it. It’s just not. We will reload this off-season, another (smaller) draft and free agency crop, and with better luck and circumstance we can be right back in the mix as a contender.

The thing that’s been bothering me is all the doom and gloom. We can be realistic about what we’re seeing on the field this year and still extremely optimistic about the franchise. It’s totally fair and deserved to criticize their play but the general sentiment, I don’t know, it’s off key somehow.

AP and DQ assembled a prominent staff. They also added lots of respected players and leaders on the field and in the locker room.

These groups have the ingenuity and experience to brainstorm through the obstacles the team currently is facing. It's just going to take fully open minds and the ability to set aside concern of hurt feelings or allegiances in the process as change is required. They have the ability to overcome!

They simply need an infusion of young talent, especially and it’s obvious on defense. Need a DE that can set the edge and pressure the QB. More Athletic on the back end as well.
They need a WR that can stretch the field. They don’t have one now. Low on draft picks with the trades last year. Should they move McLaurin for more picks? He’s 30 now and the injuries can pile up. And get a difference maker TE. A lot of this is due to the pathetic Rivera drafts and the depth is bare.

Jaylin Lane and Luke McC have both shone when provided the opportunity. I am particularly bullish on Lane.
Our defensive players outside of the young CBs are just too slow. Not sure if Whitt is really to blame for that. Payne is having a career year, but given how he regressed after getting a new contract, I am not sure about re-signing him after this year (or does he have another year on his current deal?). I love Wagner, but he reminds me of Fletcher's last year here- great teammate and field general, but too slowed down. He will probably retire after this year and have a long career in broadcasting....I mean, he isn't going to get drunk and beat up some old man in Vegas over parking.... Finding a solid ILB to complement Luvu should not be too difficult. More difficult will be finding a replacement for Ertz, if Sinnott is not the guy.

3-4 record is not a sky is falling record, (I have always been under the belief that if you start 5-5 or better, the team has a realistic shot at making the playoffs as long as they are playing their best ball for the remainder of the season) and if the team was getting miraculously healthy this week, I would have some confidence that *at least* they can go back to running track meet on the scoreboards against their opponents, but in the short term I am unconvinced a whole lot is going to change in time for it to make a difference for this season. Long term/Big-picture I am still unwavering in my belief this franchise is going to be a winner for awhile.

It's all about setting the proper expectations for this team in order to determine what the sky is doing.

The sky is not falling when you realize that this is year 2 of a total rebuild of pretty much an expansion team.

But, if you felt we were one player away from a super bowl run this year, based on what we accomplished last year, then the sky is crushing you.

We suffer with each loss, and we will suffer some more before this year is over, but these are just paper cuts if we remind ourselves, we're still rebuilding.

It seems like most other teams can do a complete rebuild in a year or two.. in Washington it takes 5y.. or not at all. .. and now that Peters gave away most of our draft pics for a bunch on old has beens... we are on the Ron 10y rebuild plan.

3-4 record is not a sky is falling record
:amen:

For 25 years, all I ask for every season is a winning record. Those seasons have been few and far between, and the ones we've had during that time were thrilling!!!
That's all I'm asking now with everything going on. I mean, basically we're the soap opera of the NFL. (And I know soaps!!)
No bueno, for those who watch the tela novelas.

It probably doesn't feel this way right now, but the Lattimore trade probably isn't even top ten bad if we include the Snyder years.

I'm a "sky is falling" guy unfortunately......I just don't see us turning this around with the upcoming schedule and our defensive struggles! I'd love to be wrong and will be the first to admit I was if we do turn it around.

But as of now, I'm setting myself up for a barely or under .500 season, missing the playoffs.🤷

Love the positivity from everybody!

Eh. In the grand scheme of Washington NFL Football this season won't even be a footnote. After 25 years of Snyder ... a garden-variety mediocre injury-plagued season after a NFCCG appearance is so far down the list of things to worry about that it hardly registers. The team has a QB and an OL. It's got some skill positions covered and the makings of a nice secondary. In the long run I think things will be fine. This season is a wash. Bad injuries early. The defense is still shoddy, which we were somewhat expecting, and now we can't keep up in shootouts. It happens.

And hey, not holding my breath or anything but if everyone gets healthy at the same time we could go on a run. It happened to Philly last year. Stranger things have happened.
