The return of Trent Williams?!?

I was posting that ST because it states "he was demanding a new deal before requesting a trade." To counter Mike's it was all about the medical issue.

It was a medical issue... He had a tumor on his head and the team doctors kept telling him to not worry about it.

Finally he went and sought his own medical opinion and was told that it COULD have been cancerous and they need to do further tests... He got so pissed off he demanded a trade. Had everything been hunky dory he probably sets his price to sign here and requests the same amount from Washington. The demanding of the trade was because he didn't want to be HERE with Bruce Allen and these doctors.

You don't believe he wanted to be traded because of the misdiagnosis of the tumor?

I believe he was pissed, but also believe he was utilizing that to maneuver getting a new deal since 12 mil a year was no longer top dollar for a top tier LT. If the conversation went "Hey I want a new deal at 20 million per year or trade me." That doesn't sound like anything other than money motivation.

I wouldn’t want him. Some guys you pay regardless and deal with their headaches. That was Williams years ago when he was one of the best LTs in the league. You do what you have to in order to keep him happy. He’s not there any more. And his latest headache was him finding a reason not to play. I don’t ever want someone who doesn’t want to play. Especially when we learned it was about money as much as anything else. People that are willing to not play for one reason will find another reason to not play. So that headache is not worth it as this stage in his career. He’s not an all pro you do anything to keep.

That's a big if... I have no idea how the conversation went.. but the narrative of trade did not happen until AFTER the medical... and that article was in March of 2020 so it was after he had sat out the whole season because he couldnt pass a physical due to 'his helmet not fitting on his head.'

He forfeited $9million to sit out if i'm not mistaken.

he was also dealing with a dysfunctional org year after year while watching a coaching staff be as dramatic on top of losing.

that takes just as big of a toll.

We all know why he left.

Not sure what you mean here? A lot of fans think he was wronged and that the medical staff and coaches put his life in danger. Many others thought he blamed those folks for what it was his responsibility to manage (by seeing any specialist he desired) and that it was actually his desire to get his deal RE-done mid-deal that was at the heart of it.

I wasn’t sure which group you agree with but there definitely wasn’t agreement among fans.

I think it all centered around the medical, or at least that's how I understood it. He claimed he couldn't put his helmet on and he was still under contract for 2 seasons. If we offered him $20 mil a year does he stay or is he hellbent on leaving because of his medicals and was done dealing with Bruce and co?

If he wants more than about $5 mil a year I'd say no thanks. At this point he's a stop-gap.

Also, at the first hint of drama I'd show him the door.

if you think he or anyone on any OL settles for $5mil per year you might as well just say "no" and not even offer it :)

That's a journeyman rate. Our highest paid lineman under contract is currently Morgan Moses, who will count $9.6 million against the cap in 2021. Roullier is next at about $5 million against the cap this year.

$5 million would put Williams at about the 20th highest paid LT in the league. I think that's probably where I'd value him these days. At his age he's not going to get a long-term backloaded deal.

If he is expecting more than that, I and I figure he is, let him get it somewhere else. Shrug.

He isn't a journeyman. Regardless of personal opinion, he is worth more than $5mil per season.

From my perspective there is nothing we or Ron Rivera can do about what Bruce Allen did or didn't do here from 2010-2019.

So, for players, ex-players and coaches that carry baggage from that time period and feel they have a chip on their shoulder, as Williams clearly does, the best thing to do is keep clear of them and let them continue their careers elsewhere.

We want young, aggressive, players here that feel wanted and believe in Rivera and want to win games.

That is the opposite of where Trent Williams is in his career. He is looking to get paid for what he DID in the past as his performance in SF in 2020 combined with his missing most of the 2019 season in Washington does not equate to a guy that should be receiving a $15-20M payday.

Brandon Scherff is 29 and was a first team all-pro this past season and there are questions about how much he is worth and what we can afford and that is down in the $15-16M range. And he actually wants to be here.

So, while I have been a semi-critic of Scherff in the past for his lack of durability and sometimes uneven play in 2018 and 2019, there is no question who I would be signing if I were the GM.

No way I bring Trent Williams back here - I don't care if he wanted to play for $0.

No thanks. At 33 and with his history we might get 16 games out of him over the next TWO seasons.

He isn't even a top 5 LT in the NFC now, much less the whole of the league.

The business end of this game is hard on players over 30 not playing QB or K.

With a flat or declining cap for 2021 and potentially 2022, the mantra is younger and cheaper.

Some of these 32 and 33 year old vets are going to find the free agent marketplace to be a hostile place to their wants and desires, much as baseball players did a couple of years ago.

If I were the GM here I would be identifying 27 and 28 year old players that may end up as cap casualties that can play at a solid level for the next 3-4 years for us.

After the draft you will see a bunch of 32 and 33 year old players sign one year deals for $4 or $5M just to stay in the league. In other years they may have been kept by their previous team or received a significant offer in the early stages of free agency.

Then we have this:

Chargers are actively shopping former Pro-Bowl guard Trai Turner, per source. It looks like he will be traded or released in the near future. He’s due $11.5 million this season.
