The Peyton Manning discussion

The insider who has had the scoop on Manning for several weeks now (he is the person that Mort went to in recent days) has been saying that Manning will play in 2012 - he's been saying it for weeks. I didn't know if that was true, but he has been dead on the entire way. Schefter has confirmed it too.

One other bit of news. By April or May, Mannning is expected to be at or close to 100% according to this source.

Things have become much more interesting with regards to Peyton Manning.

Is the rumor about Peyton possibly winding up with the Jets still floating around somewhere? I hadn't seen anything on it in the past few days and was wondering if anyone else had.
 
I think considering the Jets are an absolute mess and the coach is a loud mouth I think the consensus is he will not go there.

Listened to Steve Young this morning proclaim it is almost certain Peyton will come to Washington to play for Shanny.

Young made a strong case for it, but it was too rosy for me. He said that what Shanahan did with him when they won the Super Bowl was to give him a series of plays for differing scenarios and that it was Young's responsibility to choose what play to run once he got to the line.

He said that Shanny just hasn't been able to find a QB since John Elway who he could trust to be able to do this. He feels that Peyton would a perfect fit for the Shanahan scheme. I am not sure how realistic that is now that Kyle is running the offense, but it was an interesting take from a former QB who won a Super Bowl with Shanahan as his coach/coordinator.

I will say that listening to Steve Young this morning makes me wonder if I haven't been too hard on Shanahan. Young had nothing but extremely high praise for coach.
 
Shanahan's skills as a GM/personnel guy is what has been questioned.

From what I read the front office execs working with Shanahan through the two Super Bowls were let go in 2001 and Mike ran the entire show from 2001-2008 when the results for Denver were much less impressive.

I think in many ways Shanahan is like Gibbs. Gibbs was a great coach but only so-so as his own personnel guy and his greatest adversity in coming back to coach the Redskins was in not having the proper players in place at critical spots.

The give and take between a GM and a Head Coach has proven over time to be the collaborative approach that leads to organizational success.
 
And Shanahan having complete control was my biggest concern when he was brought in, but his coaching has been suspect at times too.

Depends on your point of view - he took some very subpar squads to the playoffs, QB'd by the likes of Brian Griese and Jake Plummer. I'd say he did a lot with not very much! Of course, you could say he failed at finding a QB, but then again a LOT of coaches do that.
 
I think that's Bulldogs point, LL. Shanahan the GM failed Shanahan the coach, though Shanahan the coach was able to work small miracles with some crappy personnel.
 
Don't be surprised if Peyton Manning ends up in Miami - that seems to be the consensus around the league. That would be the best case scenario for the Redskins as well. The Dolphins pick 8th and really don't have the stomach for moving way up in the draft. This would allow the Redskins some flexibility in the draft.

The next two QB needy teams (KC and Seattle) pick 11th and 12th. Neither one is expected to move up that far in the draft. For those two, it will come down to who wants Ryan Tannehill the most.

The Redskins could be sitting in a very good spot at 6th. It is still a sure bet that Mike Holmgren will not move up to select a QB and prefers to draft Trent Richardson with that 4th choice.
 
I still find it hard to believe that Manning will play for anyone other than the Colts. Clearly Indy won't pay the bonus, but I bet they both agree to rip up the old agreement and sign a new contract. Peyton is not going anywhere in my humble opinion. I think they make a deal with the Browns, accrue multiple picks, and select a Qb in the 2-3rd round.
 
You may be right on the deal, but I think you're way off thinking they'll pass up the opportunity to draft Luck (or RGIII). This year has shown just how uncertain Manning's future is - even if he was healthy, the time would be right to draft his replacement. They are in the catbird seat and will not pass up the opportunity to find Manning's successor whether Peyton is part of their future plans or not.

There's no discounting this and I would add, since you put it in parenthesis, RGIII should not be ruled out in Indy. The behavior Irsay has shown over the past year should be a fairly clear indicator that he is unpredictable to say the least. He has been all over the map in his dealing with Peyton so it should stand to wonder which direction he'll go in the draft.

Maybe he has a desire for a QB who is more electric in his play than a QB who by all accounts should be the next Peyton Manning. I am not saying Manning has not been electric, he has been more than capable of lighting it up. But he doesn't possess the same type of energy that the young crop of QB's seems to possess, like Cam Newton.

Maybe Irsay is looking for something different that will, shock the establishment. He has exhibited a "sensationalist" mentality over the past year or so. After all, the NFL seems to be taking a different shape, more toward the entertainment value so Irsay could be steering in that direction.

It would not surprise me one bit to see Irsay take a different path from Andrew Luck, the safe bet to be another Manning type, and choose RGIII with the 1st pick in the draft!
 
The 2004 Draft was filled with Quarterbacks! Eli Manning at #1, Rivers at #4 and Big Ben at #11 were the first three QB's that year. Schaub was a 3rd round pick that year too.

As far as more recent the case can be made for 2008. Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco neither one have proven that they are elite QBs but they have won a lot of games.

Ryman might be on to something - assuming he meant first two QBs off the board and not QBs taken 1st and 2nd overall (actually hasn't happened that much), there's generally either two terrible QBs, or one really good one and one mediocre to decent one. Jury is still out on Jake Locker & Sam Bradford, and probably Mark Sanchize also.

Well, I am very much an amateur scout but from what I see Luck and Griffin are both going to really good NFL quarterbacks. I guess one could make a case that if Griffin goes to Cleveland he could struggle because... well it's Cleveland but he could also be the new Lebron.
