The Peyton Manning discussion

Now the question goes back to Peyton... If he is healthy does he want to stay in Indianapolis? I don't think he does. He is going to tell the Colts that Luck needs to play immediately and to let him go. Peyton will then pick and choose where he wants to go.

From our standpoint, I just hope that Shanny isn't interested in Peyton coming here. I think it would be a bigger mistake than the McNabb move.

You could drive a Formula One car. There's no question about it. The question is how well you'd do at it.

There's no question that Peyton could run Shanny's offense. The question is how well he could do it. He's more misfit for our scheme than McNabb. Just like McNabb, Manning has been running an offense that was intelligently designed for his skill set. It's completely different than the Shanahan scheme. It isn't just a matter of tweaking the scheme for a QB. It's a totally different strategic approach.

It made no sense for Shanny to switch to the Reid/McNabb offense for a 34 year-old QB and it makes no more sense to switch to the Moore/Manning offense for a 36 year-old QB.

I think the most likely scenario in all of this is being ignored - Manning never takes another NFL snap. The surgery Manning had (twice now) is a relatively simple procedure. That he has not come back from it doesn't bode well. I have to wonder if he doesn't have some significant and permanent nerve damage.

I think the most likely scenario is that he is done playing professional football and all the speculation will be for naught.

Not only do I emphatically agree with this, I would like to add yet another-and I think-important component. In Indy, Peyton had an unusual amount of control of the game while the game was in progress-reading defenses, adjusting offensive assignments, many of the things that an OC normally does in-game were done by Peyton instead. Now, given the dysfunctional train wreck that was the McNabb/Shanahan experiment-with special emphasis on Kyle Shanahan's impatience with McNabb's , for lack of a better word, "creativity"-coloring outside the lines of Kyle's system, if you will-I simply can't see anything but potential headaches in store if Peyton were to come here.

This would be a classic case of square-peg-in-a-round-hole, IMO.

That seems quite likely, and from his standpoint, that could be the best thing for his reputation.

I can't foresee him winning with the Colts, given the degrading of his supporting cast, nor can I foresee him succeeding anywhere else. That Colts scheme was very intelligently designed to emphasize what he could do well and not to ask him to do things he wasn't good at.

I don't know whether to credit Tom Moore, Archie Manning, or both... but Peyton was brilliantly handled. He's not likely to get that anywhere else in the NFL.

In Archie's shoes, I'd advise Peyton to quit now.
 
I can't disagree with anything said but I will tell you that competitors compete. If Peyton feels that he can play at a high level he will come back and play. However, I think he has enough respect for the game to not come back if he cannot be at least most of what he was. He will also look at his health outside of football. He has a family now and he wants to be play with his children and will not risk a permanent injury. As far as the injury itself I am not going to pretend that I know that much about neck surgeries. However, three neck surgeries in two years is pretty scary.

At the end of the day, I suspect Boone will probably be right. Peyton Manning has probably already played his final down of football in his career.

Hard to fathom considering Peyton Manning has always worn the big S on the front of his jersey. I don't think Peyton thinks he is done and I'm sure he won't go quietly into retirement. I'd like to think he'll pull a Kurt Warner and play at a high level for another four years or so. The questions is.....with who?
 
Nature of the injury though Jimbo. You can't will nerves to function. If he never gets the strength or grip back in the affected arm, no amount of willpower or toughness will make a difference.

Of course, I could be dead wrong. But this is a simple surgery. That he hasn't recovered, and in fact required multiple surgeries is a very bad sign.
 
No. Nerve damage is generally not reparable. There are nerve-related injuries or syndromes (I had a nerve 'demyelinate' for example, that's where the coating of a nerve has it's myelin sheath destroyed or damaged, and it took me 13-14 months to get back full function of my right arm - which has never been the same). But nerve cells cannot be 'regrown' or regenerated.

So if he truly has damaged nerves as a result of the surgeries, that's not going to get better beyond a certain point.

I'm not sure what you mean about 'coming back from paralysis'? That's not currently possible either. Then again, you may be being sarcastic :)
 
I was being serious, tho I may have not used the right term. But I've seen quite a few instances (and I'm sure all of here have as well) of athletes, and people in general, get injured, and lose their ability to move, feel, and walk. And even have doctors tell them they would never walk again. But through rehabilitation and perhaps sheer will-power as well, they re-gain that ability. How would you term those cases, if not "paralysis" ?
 
I'm not discounting people who surprise everyone, but the other possibility is that they were not diagnosed with 100% accuracy. It's impossible to know the exact damage with brain, spinal, and nerve damage. How much a patient is able to recover is difficult to predict. The motivation level and determination of someone with this kind of injury isn't irrelevant - but the bottom line is, nerve cells that are dead are dead. There's nothing determination can do about it. It's quite possible that Manning suffered permanent damage (either from compression of nerves before or after the surgeries, or during the surgery). You can't 'rehab' that.
 
Right you are, Boone. Hard to tell exactly to what extent his nerve damage will affect his grip or his arm. Everyone seems to be painting a "rosy" picture, including Peyton. Personally, I think the Colts would be Dolts to play "wait and see" with Peyton when they have Luck waiting in the wings.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out and how Manning's "recovery" continues.
 
i'm a new member just joined..but i would take manning over grossman and beck even if he could only throw 20 yards a pass...Manning doesn't hold the ball very long... we have a young online but did get better towards the end of the season...just my 2 cents
