I didn't like it at first,, but thought it will grow on me. I realize that I hate it.
While my history with the team doesn't favor my opinion over anyone, nevertheless, I am a Baltimorean who has been a Washington football fan since the 1940's. While WWII continued to rage.
At that time, Baltimore had a team (the Colts) in the short-lived All-American Conference.
I have some Native American heritage (Lenape), and though Marshall was a racist, I know he changed the name from Braves to Redskins to honor Indians, not to be derisive. I have never found it insulting, but I understand and so be it.

The name Commandos is hard and harsh. It's weak and toothless and has neither flow nor relevance. That nonsense about trademark for Red Wolves is total BS.
Washington Wolves itself has a nice flow and sound to it, beside the fact that wolves are beautiful and courageous. If not that, a little more thought and consideration would have come up
with something better than the monstrosity that is Commanders.

They won't do it because screw the loyal suffering fanbase, but they have enough money (and time) to do an about face and think on it again.

Well it will take time getting used to it. But it is here to stay for sure!

As far as Wolves ... disagree that the patent question is nonsense. In fact at this point I think this is probably what they would have gone with in a simpler time. They know how saleable that would have been. Nowadays though the licensing of something like a pro franchise name is a straight up morass. On this one thing at least I believe what they actually say.

I have no doubt there would’ve been copyright hurdles and/or costs associated going with a name that might’ve been contested. On the other hand the idea that Washington would not have or could not have overcome those hurdles with the legal resources available and clear precedent showing opponents would have been unlikely to prevail is questionable. They just decided it wasn’t worth the effort, and probably more importantly wanted to move on with fans incredibly impatient already. Then there’s the issue of Danny wanting to sell as much swag as possible as quickly as possible.

Bottom line, if they’d wanted the team to be the Wolves or Redwolves I’m pretty confident they could’ve gotten there eventually. They just opted not to go to the trouble or expense.

I don’t as much fault them for that - just a business decision. But what they did then, select a name with literally no significant fan or alumni support of any kind, that just sucks.

That's fair, brother. But it's one of those things we'll likely never really know. I do wish we had seen/heard/read about the team's legal types actively fighting for Warriors or Wolves ... it would have made the eventual decision to go with Commanders a bit more palatable. But if/how much they did actually push is just not something the public is in a position to know.

Maybe someday we'll get a book on how this fugly sausage was made.

Probably have the wrong copyright year.

The way this team is functioning an appropriate name would be ‘Washington Inbredskins’

Antonio Gibson told John Keim on his podcast that the final two names were Commanders and Admirals.

Whew, dodged a harpoon there.

Oof. Admirals is even worse than Commanders. I think Ron Rivera picked these names - I really do.

Riggins speaks the truth

I don't think anyone can argue against what he said.. In fact, I think we all feel this way for the most part, even those of us that are deciding to stick around.

I think we all can also look at the things the Redskins provided us without resenting what could happen going forward. I have some life long friends because of the Redskins. The same can't be said about the Commanders... yet.

John Riggins is still pulling the wagon for the Redskins. :)

I’m hanging by a thread at the moment, and honestly for me it’s gonna come down to 2 things over the off-season.

1. This team has to draft a decent QB, even if they sign a Wilson or Carr.

2. Dan needs forced to sell, that mf doesn’t deserve fans, even before all these allegations came out.

Just another in an endless line of bad decisions by the team.

Can you imagine Baltimore selling a Johnny Unitas Ravens jersey?

It’s what happens when you haven’t had a truly great iconic player in 30 years :)

Apples and oranges though, isn't it, Mark? I mean, the franchise that Unitas played for is still around and playing ball. The Ravens really ARE an expansion team.

This isn't an expansion. It is just* a name change. This is, in every way possible (for better AND for worse), the same franchise Riggins played for.

Not that I'm on board with putting jerseys out with players' names from decades past either.

Honestly, this is hard and I'm at a loss for how to handle it all. The only real solution that comes to mind is a jersey in the correct colors for the era that is simply branded as "Washington" without reference to either the Redskins or the Commanders.

It plays particular badly though when the player whose name they are pimping on the new jersey has made it clear he hates the new name and wants nothing to do with ‘the Commanders’.

But he never played for the Commanders. AGAIN, the team is too stupid to understand making money.

We have a throwback option built in. Pause the jersey sales on the retired players for about 2 - 3 years, then drop THIS jersey with a Legacy or Heritage patch. It's a Redskins jersey without the name. No reason to stick any former player on a Commanders jersey.
