The name

True dat, Neo. Just looking for some kind of comp ... which there really isn't, since the last time an existing NFL team actually changed their name w/o relocating was back in 1940.

Unitas and Baltimore was the first one with a legendary player in a city with a new team name I could think of. It's early. :)

btw you can still get a Mitchell & Ness throw back for Riggo, just keep this going. Do the same type of thing for EVERY retired player.

As Mark alluded to - Jason Wright and his team are particularly tone deaf when it comes to this fanbase and former Redskins players who have been invested in the ‘Redskins’ for a large part of their adult lives. You can’t brand or market your way to acceptance or an embracing of the name. Only time, and probably quite a bit of that, may allow it to happen. If they ever get this through their highly polished and educated brains, they’ll reduce the gaffes significantly.

What makes this unique is that they didn’t just change the name… they changed it because the name was deemed unacceptable and racist. Normally you’d sell jerseys with the previous logo on it but in this case even that is unacceptable.

I get it. This is a real corner case other than maybe the Bullets/Wizards thing, which doesn't carry the same kind of baggage.

BTW - you can get a #41 Wes Unseld jersey, straight from the Wizards fan shop, in the original Bullets format AND the new Wizards format. Granted, I don't follow basketball like I do football (and I'm a Lakers fan besides) but I don't remember ever hearing anyone make a fuss about Unseld not playing for the Wizards. Did I just miss that because I'm not plugged into that team like I am this one?

Hard to say, brother. That was before the Twitterverse. lol

Plus not sure the NBA--at least in Washington, where we haven't had a relevant team since the 70's--vibrates and resonates at near the frequency of the NFL.

Yeah, totally fair.

Twitter turns everything up to 11.

This tweet kind of buries the lead. Before Riggins gets into his feelings of disenfranchisement he tells the story of his telling the organization in 2000 that they ought to change the name.

Hmm … interesting… I need to listen to the rest of it..

Pat McAfee and the boys gettin in on it...

One thing I find quite sad is that we'll never see the Redskins again.

I mean this in the way that during the season there will be weaks when teams throw out the 'Throwback' uniforms. I mean supporters in Tampa Bay or New England may one day get a kick out of seeing those classic Buccaneers uniforms, or the original Patriots etc. Those are all fair game.
But we'll NEVER see them put out the old Redskins uniform and helmet logo again even as a throwback. Fans would probably love it, but the media would have a field day.

So, it's kinda sobering to consider that we watched them play their last game probably EVER in those uniforms and logo.

Another example of the front office taking it too far. You could have removed it as the permanent name without banning it from all future team activities. That's going from 'some feel it has a negative connotation or could interpret it as racist' to 'It's racist and must be erased from the franchise forever'.

Why not just say what that implies. All Redskins fans are racists.

I'm not sure what you mean, they haven't banned the gear from the stadium. They still show NFL highlights with the old logo... I'm pretty sure nothing has been 'scrubbed'

They can’t because fans would ****ing riot :)

I was referring to products - they will no longer sell anything with that logo, not even gear for players from that era. I’m not sure how far they’ll go with scrubbing it from franchise history (will they remove all references in the HOF and record books, etc…).

well to be fair if they're forced to change the name, it's probably as much to do with the manufacturer as it does the team. If Nike is going to threaten to pull the official jersey manufacturing, but then still have the gear with a swoosh in the team store, they'd be destroyed.

I will tell you I just bought a signed Santana Moss mini helmet with the old logo on it from a website that COULD sell me that, i'm assuming becuase it was an authenticated piece of signed memorabilia. I don't know the laws / logistics of it if it's no longer an offically licensed team name?
