If somehow they were able to force a name change - I think you would see such a violent counter response - HTTR would become an anti-PC anthem that had little to do with a football team, but it would be screamed at every opportunity and it's new meaning would be '**** you - we will be who we want to be!'.

I will move on...

I think Levin sums it up nicely. This ruling does not mean anything and I think Snyder understands it better than most of these "do-gooders". There really is a lot at stake here that goes beyond the name.

Did you ever find out where it came from? I haven't heard yet other than from the statement in the ruling.

The thing that sucks, as has been pointed out before, is that it won't matter if we win in appeal. they'll find ways to continue. It's going to be a controversy whenever they can muster up their troops to make it one.

I have no confidence the 'public pressure' will ever really stop.
 
What also sucks is just how stacked the deck is against us.

We have to adequately defend against this every single time. One, or a series, of missteps could prove costly.

They only have to get it right once. Once the trademark is gone it's gone. There's other issues on the table, the point is they get infinite do overs (in a sense) and we don't.

In Scotland we have a similar problem, the two biggest soccer clubs hate each other and as a result make up songs to get at each other, after one or two poor souls complain and the Irish government got involved, signing of said "party tunes" has been outlawed, deemed unlawful and liable to offend. Now that means if you are caught signing such a song you can be arrested and taken to court under an act of parliament (please do not laugh this true).

The police and authorities obviously do not want to arrest upwards of 40,000 people every game so those on duty at said grounds will turn a blind eye, only for internet warriors and viewers at home to take to their keyboards and complain about the songs being sung and claiming to be offended by them. Result CCTV is studied and token arrests made, team is fined and warned. But this is not enough for the internet warriors they constantly demand more harsher punishments.

Here is the problem, in todays PC world it is ok to be offended, lots of people will help show you how offended you are. But once the box is opened it can never be shut. So woe betide any one who innocently uses a word, a logo or signs a song in innocence, no such thing in the PC world of today. always offended never ashamed.
 
I'm now using the term redskin like people use the word dude or bro.

It's quite popular with my crybaby liberal friends

Levin usually causes my herpes to flare up. And I don't even have herpes.

But his analysis is spot on.

The shame is, the very real aspects of his arguments can't be discussed here.
 
ESPN 980 took Mike&Mike off the air this morning to run the 12-2 show from the Sports Fix from yesterday
They're now running with Andy Polin and Kevin Sheehan on the issue.

To many it will be a waste of time and repeat of what you already know, but it's a solid source of information for anyone interested. They're have various legal guests.

If you're interested in which specific courts this stuff goes through, which specific courts and judges have rules which ways in the past, it's pretty interesting.

Of course... that's just one 'legal analyst's opinion. He's an actual trademark attorney, currently working in the field.

When asked how you go back to when it was issued to prove it...

"Well... I've never waited 25 years to file against a trademark"
 
So this guy is actually the Redskins attorney.

it's kind of bewildering he'd be publicly discussing it like this, i thought the standard was to keep quiet and save it for the court room.

but when asked how he felt compared to the last time we went through this... paraphrasing:
We fell great. In fact, we turned one of the 3 judges on the Patent Office panel. Last time it was 3-0 against us.

He went on to mention they haven't introduced one new piece of information. Feels confident in case on appeal. (this was echoed in the actual ruling in the dissenting opinion)

edit: I'll link to the MP3's when ESPN 980 posts them... They take 24 hours to post show clips and a few hours to post individual interviews normally.
 
I think he is going public because it is about time our (The Washington Redskins that is) side was put out there.

By stating this side of the argument properly he is showing their argument/case up for what is, nothing more than a money grab.

I am going to repeat this next line continualy

that's life in general.

it has taken longer....but folks are starting to see that some of the goodness bequeathed to us over the last many years isn't working to anyone's benefit. I believe, in some venues, we are fast approaching the "this far and no further point." in fact, there may be pushback....not sure yet.

I think when you look at history that seems to be a repeating trend. I have no idea whether the pushback will come in time to save our team though :(

here's what's going on: the gov't is trying to achieve an objective by attacking a business' bottom line...it's that simple. however, the trademark registration - which is what this ruling is about - only confers some privileges...it doesn't undercut the Redskins ability to sue for trademark infringement. it boils to down to where it should have been in the forst place - let consumers vote with their dollars.
 
the problem is appeasement

No matter how you put it once you appease anyone or group of people you have to continue appeaseing them because well by doing it earlier you are saying any time you want more just shout.

Appeasement has never worked ever in any country at any time in history.

You cannot please all the people all of the time, problem is the PC Brigade have (through being appeased themselvs) got society to the stage were an individual rights/likes/desires are more important than the majority's.

Absolutely. It is a shame that the ability to have those discussions here was lost due to the inability and/or unwillingness of some to do so in a manner befitting adults or consistent with the well established foundations upon which this site was built.
