The Jayden Daniels Tracker

Maybe it’s just me, but I didn’t find that Warner piece to be all that damning. In fact, some of it was IMO, a bit extra as far as what throws he should have made, what was ‘open’ etc. Also lacked context.

Beyond that, I don’t think anybody is under the impression his play is as good as last year. I think the difference is in the reasons for that and how we weight them. I see a guy with a ton of pressure to score due to a sieve defense with no consistency at receiver, dealing his own injuries, that is not throwing with anticipation because he doesn’t have that rapport and trust. Literally everything that could be off is way off. I just don’t think having that opinion should be confused with me thinking he’s playing great and literally all of it is everyone else’s fault.

5 had a rookie season for the ages last year which led alot of fans to presume that he had arrived, the QB position was set for the next decade and they'd be perennial contenders from here on out. Hell, fans had them penciled in as Superbowl contenders this year!

When I suggested last season that you might want to wait and see if he's still here in a couple of years, I was roundly scoffed at and mocked by many here. He's not even playing up to his 2024 level even when he's healthy...which nowadays, seems rare.
When a rookie QB bursts onto the scene like 5, the league takes notice and opposing teams take an off-season to study and dissect his game and that's one factor in his performance.
Secondly, when your OC depends on your legs for a running game more than any back on the roster, the hits pile up and that has an effect also.
And maybe some of the hype 5's received in the off-season led to some arrogance that led him to believe he could just go create a big play anytime he wanted to.

I understand why fans were so giddy with the first taste of success in a long time last year. But I never could understand losing your head over 5 last season.
Long time Skins fans should know better. We've seen too many QB prospects flame out over the last 30 years to all of a sudden proclaim "He's here!" after one season.

Does 5 still have a chance to develop into a franchise Qb? Yes

But this team is not out of the woods with 5 either. Adam Peters and Dan Quinn are going to have to take a measurable step forward this off-season, some how, some way, to make that possible.
Part of that step too is 5 humbling himself and re-focusing on getting better. Joe Gibbs used to say something to the effect that when you feel like your invincible in this league, there's always a knuckle sandwich waiting around the corner.

I feel like that's what this team and 5 are going through right now.

Really, everything else aside, you can’t understand why people were excited (“losing their heads” in your words) about Daniels having the best rookie season of all time last year? Really? Nothing against the rationality of your concerns, but how miserable would you have to be to not enjoy that and be hopeful lol. He wasn’t just an elite rusher, he was an elite and historically efficient and effective passer as well (and not just off of PA or the like aka easy mode)

Really? I just watched Kurt Warner’s analysis, he made the case for Jayden’s regression very clear.
It’s one game, with little context, and a lot of ‘opinion’ along with the facts.

Maybe we even agree and it’s the context where we differ. Clearly his play has regressed. He once led an offense that didn’t punt for weeks. Out of this world accuracy numbers. Basically put a very meh team on his back in route to the NFCC. Thats a hard act to follow.

Where we differ I think is on how much of its him, as opposed to the sum of all the parts. I lean hard that it’s the epic mix of suck that has caused the regression. This team has put up the worst 3 week stretch in decades. Even with his Superman cape, I’m not sure how much of a difference it makes.

All in for Week 1?

With as many times as this club has been burned by Qbs that never panned out and having seen as recently as 2012, a rookie QB having a historical season only to flame out ? Yes, if you are a long time fan, it would seem healthy to proceed with caution, instead of jumping of the cliff.

I do agree Jayden is not alone in struggling, this is a team sport. The game plan and playcalling could be better, receivers have had drops, penalties have been a problem, there have been protection breakdowns, our best receivers have been hurt, and guys have struggled to get separation downfield.

But yes, Jayden has clearly regressed. He is worse in almost every statistical category (completion percentage, QB rating, QBR, y/a, y/g, sack%, TD%, rushing ypc, lost fumbles, etc.). I am willing to chalk a lot of this up to the above “context,” but Warner has clearly shown a lot of this is him making mistakes he did not make last year. Hopefully this is just a sophomore slump and we see a return to form next year, but he is not above criticism in this “epic mix of suck.”

It’s an odd take to say all the stuff you said in the first paragraph only to follow it up with the second one, as if they aren’t related. I also don’t think that there is anything clear from watching 15 plays from one game, aside from confirmation bias.

There’s a lot of PTSD up in this joint. 😂. We are all battered in our own ways.

I guess when watching him I just made an effort to see more than the basic pattern matching of a skinny QB who can run. Like how much better and more developed he is as a passer, his mental makeup and work ethic, etc.

Then again Daniels has spent all season getting hurt and playing poorly so what the fuck do I know. Sometimes the skeptics are right

Like I said, Can he still become a franchise QB? Yep,I believe so.

But there's still alot of heavy lifting involved to get there both by him and the staff.
But the idea that you'd crown a ROOKIE after one season? Nope, can't buy that.

John Madden once said "You put a young Qb in there and let him learn, get beat up and at the end of the season, if he's still standing, you might have something to work with."
Fans these days think Qbs...hell any player, should be like instant grits. Pop 'em in the microwave for 40 seconds and they're done. Finished product.
Alot of things have changed about this game over the years but player development is not one of them.

Pro tip: don't believe a single damn thing you read on any social media site. 99% of that shit is all BS/fake. It's an absolute cesspool of misinformation.
Oh, I know that. I was just throwing it out there as an example of the stuff you were tallking about

Omitting all the other variables, the two things for me that stand out most between this season and last, he’s not throwing with anticipation and his receivers aren’t coming back to him and getting open when he is scrambling. Countless times last year, guys like Oz, Noah, and Crowder did a hell of a job of getting open on broken plays, that kept drives alive. That’s a rare sight this season. As for anticipation, the windows are smaller and it’s clear that he simply doesn’t trust, and that seems to be getting worse by the week.

I think it's obvious that having a different set of recievers running different routes in ways he's not 100% familiar with doesn't lend itself to letting the ball go in rhythm, trusting guys will be where they should be, and having 'anticipation'.

I think that's just the nature of QBing. And let's keep it even more real. He probably can't trust the guys that are playing in those spots right now.

All moot for now. Mariota will have some of the same challenges now. And whoever replaces him when HE goes down to injury.

I don't see how anyone can watch that Warner video and not have concerns. It was most definitely damning and most definitely provided context, Warner broke down each play extensively. I heard this thought on the radio and see now others have the same terrifying thought. Jayden is gun shy, perhaps due to the injuries. He pulls out of a play and starts running way too soon instead of standing in the pocket and delivering the ball to a receiver who is either open or about to be open. He was doing this last season but not doing it this season.

This was a concern coming out of college, it was removed on that glorious Monday Night against the Bengals. But now it appears to be back and that's pretty scary. He absolutely needs to play when he is healthy this season, he needs to get some confidence back.
