There's not actually an answer anyone wants to hear when reflecting on a bad season, they just wanna see em squirm and talk shit until they can change the narrative, and the narrative can't be changed until games start. If we're 6-3 and humming again, no one cares about 2025 suddenly. Until then, it's the gospel, who we were, are, and will be.

it's sad but you're right. Nothing is going to actually change between now and Sep 1. If you've come to the conclusion Quinn aint it, nothing is going to change that.. if you still have a belief, no banter back and forth is going to change that thought process. It's the dead zone, when coaches are forced to 'play the game' when it comes to interviews, and we're watching NFL level players practice against air and trying to somehow draw a projection on who they will be during the season then they line up against other guys doing the same practice.

It's probably a make or break year for him. Usually, you want to extend before the lame duck year if you want to keep the coach. So, Quinn needs to hope both his rookie coordinators hit the ground running.

What Quinn has going in his favor is that Harris, based on his main business and his history with other teams, seems to be a very patient owner. His timeline and ours may be very different.

I'll give Dan this credit. It's hard to fire your best friend and left hand man. Joe Whitt has been with Quinn forever. He really couldn't be fired after 2024 for a couple of reasons.

What I can't get out of my head - With all the time spent together, why and how did DQ evaluate Whitt so poorly to think he was a good hire as DC?

After 2024 he should absolutely have known he was not DC worthy and should have made a change.

Not to nitpick here but looking over their resumés I see 2020 in Atlanta as their first time working together.

Unless im missing something that doesn't seem like forever to me.

I think it would have been a tough and probably even controversial decision but he should have fired him after 2024.

That defense wasn't as bad as the one we fielded in 2025 and statistically you could find a few decent things to say about it but as far as the eye test goes they were horrible too.

He did, 2020 in quinns last year in Atlanta then 3 years in dallas.

And of course the two years here.

Its a semantic argument but when I think forever im thinking 20 or 30 years like forever.

Thanks for this, it’s a good interview, DQ at his best. You can see why he has had some success in this league and the players like him. He’s got good leadership skills, the way he relates to his players, sets the vision and goals, takes responsibility for past mistakes and adapts, etc.

I would love to see him get back to 2024 form and maybe even get that 28-3 monkey off his back by winning the big one. I have my doubts he can break through and reach that elite level, but he is a good coach, and I find it easy to root for him.

I’ve been tough on DQ. In my gut, I feel like even being capable of following 2024 with the disappointment level of 2025 is an indictment as a head coach.

But I’m listening to Evan Washburn right now now on the Junks who spent time with Dan for his new series on CBS Sports and actually love everything he’s had to say. I haven’t watched it yet, it’s called ‘Process’.

I get it’s fluff piece season but this wasn’t described in that way. They describe a man obsessed with self assessment and getting to the truth. He talks about how the OTA tape from 2024 to 2025 was so obvious, the difference being the lack of desperation…and that’s on him. Leaves no stone unturned in trying to get honest feedback about everything. Will check it out and see for myself. Anyone checked it out?

Absolutely.

Though I'm going to add from my teacher days while it is absolutely possible to light a fire under a student it's also on the student to keep that fire lit.

I feel the same away about sports. Coaches set the tone, must keep a keen eye out for those losing focus, and pump the team up. At the same time, professional athletes have to find it within themselves and the coaches can only do so much rah rah stuff.

I think we’re on the same page Conn.

Trying to be positive…but not seeing enough of a shift up in gears from last year across the board to believe any narrative of tangible improvement.

You aren’t wrong, but at the professional level I tend to think it’s less about “rah rah” motivation and more about creating structure where adults believe there’s accountability to their coaches and each other, and come to value that. We had the magic in 2024 but it was so obviously gone in 2025 even going into that training camp. And I refuse to believe it’s “just” the McLaurin contract stuff although that did definitely funk up the vibes a lot.

Hard to put your finger on it but clearly Quinn feels like he excised the bad vibes and refocused the team going into this offseason so…clearly it’s something the coaching staff can impact?

Honestly part of me wonders how much of it was running it back in 2025 with so many of the same veteran leaders who got to the NFFCG precipice and then didn’t get that SB, and then came back for 2025 and spent the offseason barely practicing due to age and injuries. Hard when the tone-setters aren’t setting the tone. Roster may have needed some new (and younger) leaders brought in to join longtimers/foundational guys in their rooms like Daniels, Terry, Cosmi, and Reavo. And now we’ve done that.

You say that. However, there is also something to the point where it was Whitt’s first year as DC, and very few people are good at a new job immediately. It takes time to learn how to do “the next level up” jobs when you get promoted. And if you fire people who struggle in a new job right away, everybody would get fired in 6 months.

There are clearly exceptions.

But if Quinn thought Whitt had what it took, 2024 was a valuable learning experience and he was confident Whitt would work out, I can buy that.

But what I would say is Whitt would have had to really convince me he knew what he was doing and what he was doing to do differently and what he learned. Becuase the Peter Principal is also true: people will rise to their level of incompetence. Which means a person keeps getting promoted until they reach a level they suck at. And figuring out who has “Petered” is a skill in and of itself.

Clearly hindsight being 50/50 (according to the scholar Steve Spurrier) Quinn should have seen the signs and moved on. But I guarantee it wasn’t super obvious with a first year coordinator.

I don't fault Quinn for giving Whitt Jr. another season. Yeah, the defense was bad in 2024 but it was enough to get us deep into the playoffs and showed signs of life in some big games. Even in 2025, the epic injury bug hit and absolutely gutted the defense - and I'm not sure how fair it is to completely write off Whitt Jr. based on that season. But when you win 5 games in the 2nd year of the Jayden Daniels era, I don't care who the HC is - the seat gets a lot hotter and you have to do something to change course. More than one thing can be true at the same time and while having to let your DC go in this scenario is likely the smart and right thing to do, it still represents a major miscalculation in handing over the defense to someone who seemingly wasn't ready for prime time. I didn't like the Kingsbury change, but I will give credit to Quinn for being aggressive if he felt things weren't working, and credit to AP for allowing him to do what he feels he needs to do. It'll either look like genius 2 years from now, or we'll be talking about a different HC and coordinators.
