The HC Dan Quinn Discussion Thread

You know I agree with you about how AP set up this offense to fail. With you there. My issues with Kliff are more systemic and long term, I didn’t expect the situation to actually come to a head for at least another year. I’ve been of the mind that he’d be Daniels’ first OC, and that we’d look back on it mostly fondly but that it wasn’t meant to be long term as Quinn is eventually replaced by the sort of young OC we all assumed was in the cards originally.

So it happening now makes it feel like there’s something terrible happening in these meeting rooms and with the playcalling, and that’s never been my argument. I’ve always taken the long view on why I don’t support this scheme and philosophy as a SB-winning endeavor as Daniels grows. To rip that bandaid off now while he’s still on his rookie contract and hasn’t actually grown that much yet, I didn’t expect things to go so badly that it would be realistic this soon. So even as an outspoken anti-Kliff guy, I didn’t expect this timeline on things.

I 100% get what you’re saying about the legendary Kliff work ethic and the relationship with Daniels. But you have to understand that if I’m not happy with the output of that epic work ethic and relationship, then I’m not going to value those aspects as highly as you, because clearly the work product itself producing isn’t what I want, but picture. If we hire the right person, they’ll do what they have to do with Daniels to be successful. If they don’t, this staff is sunk anyways.

I am sort of a regimented guy in my own work when it gets busy. My work is very cyclical. And when I do my quirky routines, I don't have company doing it. It would be super cool to have someone working with me through the whole thing.

So reading about Jayden having someone with him enhancing that step by step, I found those stories very unique. And in my own small way, I could identify with some of the Jayden stuff as to being a rigourous routine guy.

Hearing about Quinn lol at the hotel in Arizona hearing Jayden and Kliff working together in Kliff's hotel room all day. Stuff like that, I do think is unusual.

And while I agree with you I don't like Jayden's mom weighing in, I take her comment and Jayden's comments yesterday and please don't do this to me. And I'd ignore that plea if I thought this regime has been great to Jayden but I think its closer to the opposite.

And I recall like yesterday, the narrative about how this team took care of Jayden more than the Bears did Caleb was almost all about Kliff. Because the narrative leading into that season was the opposite.

Of course, Quinn shouldn't care about the process if he doesn't like the outcome. I don't disagree with that.

But I am not so sure I trust Quinn's instincts on this. Same dude who hired Whitt. Same dude who apparently Keim thinks might target Raheem Morris (will see).

Keim mentioned GMs are usually hands of the coaching hires. But in general I liked AP's presser yesterday, it was no excuses, and he at times looked intense. And he slipped in some answers I liked. To protect Jayden give him weapons and a better defense, admitted it was a lesson to him what happened at WR, highlighting edge.

It has stuck with me Bram saying he's been around a lot of football guys but never anyone as competitive as Peters. lol, Peters had that eye of the tiger IMO yesterday.

Quinn comes off very humbled by everything, also no excused. All of that is great. But part of me wonders is him being this super nice personality, father figure type, who is just way too nice. So the type who would love a Raheem Morris because of his personality as an example. Working with dudes that give the vibe of a Tony Robbins seminar. And to me there are limits to that. I probably value motivation more than most but there is a real chess game component to this game, too.
very much I agree with all of this. I took worry about D possibly having the too nice of a guy, too strong in allegiances to make some slashing type moves. My best example is my concern that he won't fire Whitt, just demote him unless a new DC does the dirty deed

I think as a rookie, when he scrambled it was mainly how I envision him working if he’s going to play at an elite level for a long time. Frustrate the defense when there isn’t anything there by running for the first down, be more aggressive with it in the red zone and on 4th down, but protect yourself and don’t take unnecessary punishment. He had a frustrating habit of taking a hit going out of bounds behind the LOS instead of just throwing the ball away, but other than that he was pretty smart with it when he called his own number outside of an RPO. This year, he got more reckless and desperate and tried to play hero ball when nothing was working. Coaches didn’t help him with their calls.

Going forward, mostly remove designed runs, and get Daniels to understand his role as the franchise QB depends on being healthy so that he can play and win a lot of games (he sounds well on his way after that last presser of the season). His legs are a garnish on top of an elite passer if he is to have the career he wants, not the main course.
Another encouraging aspect from yesterday, and Galdi talked about this on this morning's pod, that Daniels admits he needs to "rebuild himself from the ground up." That caught my attention.

The more we discuss this the more convinced I am the offensive review is more of improving aspects of the approach--from free agency through the gameday play calls--to provide Daniels with more weapons and protect him from trying to carry the offense single handedly, and subsequently getting him killed.

I will disagree, partially at least here. KK was able to cobble together a competent offense in a cave with a box of scraps. So while Daniels regressed for a variety of reasons, partially due to play calls, the work ethic did produce results overall.

Yeah. Like I said, he’s not a disaster and I didn’t expect this to be a mainstream discussion for at least another year. I expected Kliff (and Quinn) to be a problem when we eventually couldn’t get over the hump. I didn’t expect a disaster season to create these conversations so “early”. So my issues with Kliff and his scheme persist, every week, even when things are going well: for they are issues that I think prevent us from being a prolific playoff team and SB winner long term, not issues that prevent us from being a wildcard level striver or consistent 10-win team. This conversation is happening ahead of schedule for me because the year went so poorly and the roster had a poor build/fell apart with injuries. But it doesn’t change how I feel, big picture, which is that Kliff isn’t good enough long term for the talent that I think Daniels brings and where it should take us as a franchise. That take of course feels a little sillier when we can’t even win 5 games. Feels like moving deck chairs around on the Titanic, and I get that. I do not hate Kliff, my issues with him have always been ones that I thought would keep us from being champions long term, not make us suck ass.

Or he might opt to continue handling DC duties himself, a move I would view as very weak given how many other things need his attention, but that would allow him to avoid the unpleasantry of having to fire a friend.

That would be an example of where I would want Peter’s to challenge Quinn and ask him why that is the best approach for the team.

Again, given his experience in Atlanta, this would be shocking and a big-assed nail in Quinn's coffin.

I agree that’ll be the takeaway, with or without Kliff. That’s what they’ll try to do.

It’s puzzling why it wasn’t the takeaway after last season, though. So many elements of our run weren’t sustainable without more investment in key areas. Choosing as plan A to force your 23/24 year old young QB to play at nearly an All-Pro level to compete with fourth quarter heroics…it’s not smart.

Yes, that would be extremely worrying. I’d mentally tie the bow on this staff right then and there. Still would root to win, and root to be wrong. But I’d know it was already over, just on a time delay.

To put it indelicately, that would straight up be cowardly of Quinn. Ironic, because it actually causes him to do more work and take more blame. But it would be emotionally cowardly and show a step back in the professional growth he says he focused on after losing the ATL job.

I think Peters pretty much said that it was a lesson learned--they didn't do enough.

Something else I noticed: that they're not letting anyone off the hook here--Peters, Quinn, KK, Whitt (lol!), Izzo, everyone. Izzo was called out in that "controversial" non-answer from Quinn about the staff, and the Special Teams were really good, I thought. And, honestly, after a 5-win season, they no one should be free from criticism.

Now I really want them to keep Kingsbury! (I had to post the screen shot because he blocked me...probably for repeatedly calling his show "Fat and Not Funny")

Absolutely and he state he would not do that again when he was hired here, He said he learned that he couldn't or wouldn't again handle both HC and Dc duties, learning from his past!

I took am must more on board with Kliff staying. I'd be relying on he and DQ discussing how to better address DQ's concerns and promising him some real deal weapons being added

Quinn is a clown lol

If we are losing Kliff just bring in a new coaching staff entirely. Kliff has things he can be better at of course but no reason to get rid of him. The offense was plagued by injuries.
