The Front Office: Adam Peters and Roster Construction

CB is my biggest concern position on the team

That said, this is the definition of cherry picking bad stats to cause a stir type of tweet I hate.

Douglas actually played well last year. Robertson was forced to play outside and now he’s playing inside.

The position is a concern but that tweet aggravates me.

Sainristil is the only bright spot there.

He has some D Hall in him, but that's not an encouraging group.

I'm too distracted by worrying for Grant. He looks to be a trip to Five Guys away from a quintuple bypass.

Peters' word salad response followed by repeating "we feel great about Nick" for the millionth time and declaring "Matt [Gulbin] is fantastic" as a triggering phrase coming from an authority figure in DC does not inspire confidence.

You can't just say "we love Nick". You have to explain why you think a guy who has been a backup guard his entire career, including the past two years in your own building, now has the makings of a starting Center. Does the scheme call for something different? Has the position evolved to lend itself to a different skillset or athletic profile? Has his command of the playcalling improved to where you think he is capable of this now where he wasn't before? Instead it's just DPRK state television: "We feel great about Nick"

Unfortunately it comes across as pretty patronizing to the fans to utter the phrase “two good starting level Centers” in reference to Allegretti + Gulbin.

We know you have to have your players backs and sell your decisions. This goes beyond that in a sort of insulting way. You gave Good-Jones almost all the starting C snaps the majority of the offseason, cut him and put him on the PS, but Gulbin is a “good starting level Center” now? It’s just shitting in the fans’ hands and telling them it’s money, come on.

Like, back your guys. Have confidence. But isn’t it enough to say “we have confidence that Allegretti can anchor this line, and we really like what Gulbin has shown as a rookie, we believe he can continue to develop into a good player for us” or something like that?

At CB I was more concerned a few weeks back. Now that we have Moreau and the 2 new additions to the PS as cover I feel better about it.
At C I wonder if they will work out Seth McLaughlin. Was waived by the Lions on Wednesday. He’s not the experienced piece I guess we need more but if Gulbin has G flexibility then I might prefer McLauglin on the PS than Good-Jones

AP does talk in riddles at times. I think he’s always been slightly awkward and uncomfortable in front of the camera during questioning, evident from day 1 of his tenure.

This troubles me. A few simple restructures and the Cowboys clear another 19 million in cap space. They now have 33 million, despite all the fat contracts they have handed out. This is how good teams get around the cap to add/keep more talent. And no, it doesn’t really catch up with them later, the cap rises every single year as we all know.

This is my biggest beef by far with AP. We don’t do this at all. Not that we need to since we don’t come close to spending the cap anyway. But it just goes to show you we are under spending by a lot more than what the cap says. I don’t know the exact numbers, but if we are 30 million under, the real opportunity number is probably more like 60.

I know I’ve ranted about this a lot, for which I apologize and I’ll try to let it go moving forward. I’ve always liked AP, but to me there’s no denying that as things stand his legacy is going to be that he completely wasted JD5’s rookie contract through unnecessary frugality.

Just wondering though, is the frugality coming from AP or ownership? I assume in most cases the GM can work the spreadsheets and move the decimal points around but ownership still has the final say. I don't think anything has leaked out either way as to why the front office seems okay coming in a good amount under the cap so far in all three seasons.

I wouldn’t really call it a leak. AP has directly mentioned multiple times that it’s not really about the “cap”, it’s about a cash cap. He’s stopped mentioning it as he gets more savvy. But it’s clear, probably due to massive expenditures on purchasing the team and building the stadium (lobbying + building costs), that they utilize an artificial cap based on cash spendings. It’s the main reason they cut Biadasz, which didn’t really save much cap space but saved millions in real dollars from being paid out. So, yeah. Needless to say I’m not happy about that and have also been annoying about it. They look like they’re spending a ton of money because so much of the roster is churning over in FA every offseason, but most of that money is just replacing money that was already being spent, so the total dollars output in FA this year for instance is deceiving. They aren’t maximizing what they could be doing, to save cash. I’m hoping it changes after the stadium opens but that’s already going to be halfway into Jayden Daniels’ career unless we’re extremely lucky.

These practices are on guys who are nearing their long term contracts, so they can be renegotiated. We’re not there talent wise yet, because we’re just now getting into the 3rd off season. Who on this roster would you re-negotiate? Also, we already have cap flexibility, why do we need to create more?

A lot of the comparisons of Peters’ practices are comparing him to people that have been in place (meaning they’ve been building THEIR ROSTER) for a decade or more. He may suck at it, but my question is, who on the roster would we even do this with? We have so many rookies, and so many shorter term deals, I don’t think the option is even there. That itself is a different question, but we don’t have a lot of long term, multi year contracts currently in the building that could create this flexibility.

Jerry finally got smart last year, or someone intelligent got into Jerry's ear.

They took a serious look at a roster that couldn't win anything, and made the very unpopular, and tough decision to trade away one of the best and most popular defensive players in the league for draft picks.

Now they may actually win games.

This is the same strategy that has allowed the Tampa Bay Rays to have one of the lowest payrolls in MLB, and consistently one of the best records.

They trade away their best players every single year.....but it doesn't matter. They reload, and regularly destroy teams with 2x and 3x their payroll.

But this takes a level of intelligence that hasn't existed in Washington in decades.

To that I say, if ownership is putting a cap on spending, then why isn’t he doing these restructures to stay underneath that number while adding more talent? Maybe we don’t have as many candidates for this as other teams as Primus pointed out, but really if this ownership group filled with billionaires is really that cheap then we have a lot bigger problems than AP not being able to afford a legitimate backup center. I don’t have all the answers, but I have no doubt that we will never win consistently if we’re going to be spending considerably less than the rest of the league.

It is truly remarkable what the Rays have done (although it should be pointed out it hasn’t led to a title). But baseball because of the lack of a salary cap is a different animal. Big money teams have no problem overpaying in prospects to acquire good players from the Rays. Those teams don’t have to worry about acquiring bad contracts because they can always spend their way right back into relevance. NFL teams don’t have that luxury. They have to squeeze every ounce of talent out of what’s given to them based on the salary cap. And we are not even close to doing that for whatever reason.

My question is if Allegretti is such a great center and Baid was awful making line calls why wasn’t Allegretti the starter the last 2 years??? Is he just magically great now??
