New kicker too....
McManus is about the only one I have a slight head scratcher on. Maybe it's just me looking at all the young kickers Washington has let go over the years that have had good careers elsewhere. XPs were a question mark though.

This is a depth move. His PFF rating was only 60 overall. Of all of the Washington free agents, most have been middle to late round picks and UDFAs coming into the league while Ferrell was the #4 overall pick in 2019.
The 49ers declined to resign him so there must be something that Dan Quinn or Peters sees in terms of upside that they are patient enough to wait for as the player is 26 and was drafted as an age early 21.
In re Slye, yes he kicked a 61 yard field goal but his FG percentage was just 79.2%, lower than McManus has had in any season in the NFL. He only had a 91.9% success rate on extra points which ranks among the bottom kickers in the NFC during that time. Again, McManus has a much higher conversion rate.
This to me is 100% an Adam Peters move as he was in Denver for the Super Bowl 50 victory and McManus made pressure kick after pressure kick to help the Broncos win the title.
Kicker is one position, like quarterback, where relative youth is not necessarily an advantage.

McManus was 77.8% in his last year with Denver. With a smaller sample size, if Slye had made one more FG, he would have been at 83.33%.
McManus has had the opportunity to attempt more FGs per year, so his percentages are a little more solid and he has a much better record on XPs. I don't hate the signing, but I do wonder about our history of letting go young kickers. But of course, Peters hasn't been here so I probably shouldn't let that taint my perspective.

I didn't see that happening at all. I have to believe Howell is about to be traded...I guess the other possibility is they trade the pick?

Why worry about past ghosts? Do you think Adam Peters cares about what Zorn, Shanahan or Bruce Allen did years ago?
Besides a lot of these other kickers we let go only became 'good' and CONSISTENT when they went elsewhere.
But that is the nature of the kicking game.
When you go around the league kickers usually take a couple of years to find their niche, rarely do they stick with the original team that signed or drafted them.

I think this all but guarantees that Washington is drafting a young quarterback at #2 and Sam Howell is about to be traded to the Broncos.
To be fair to Sam, you can't bring him back as a scout team quarterback after starting 17 games in 2023. It's not fair to him and it's not value for the organization.

Kickers are funny. Fans always think that their kicker needs to go and that some other kicker is better. Front offices seem to do the same thing. As soon as the guy on your team misses some kicks, especially big ones, it’s time to move on for the front office as well as the fans. I think most of us felt Slye should go because of his missed extra points. McManus has been a pretty good kicker, but most of us have never seen him kick every game like we did Slye. The stats done lie though and they show Slye was better. I agree that when you drop a kicker, you are always picking from a list of guys that were let go because of inconsistency. So now it’s a roll of the dice on McManus.

Peters saw McManus kick the Broncos into the Super Bowl.
It's not like we had an in his prime Mark Moseley here and he was unceremoniously dumped.
Slye is a middle of the pack kicker.
It appears that Peters and Quinn are looking to get rid of all the ex-Panthers players Ron brought in.

Probably not likely but if they were looking to give Howell another season and trade down Mariota would also make sense. Although if that were the plan seems like they’d have kept Brissett…

He's not going out and making a big splash signing to get fans jumping out of their chairs but rather making solid moves for mid-tier players that seem to have outdistanced the expectations for them during their NFL careers, with the exception of Ferrell, who has great athleticism and seemed to be coming on last year before going on IR in SF.
In re quarterback, I don't think Peters moves down. While I might trade down and take a Penix on a feeling from watching his games, Peters IMO is going to stay at #2 and make the pick. I agree that Mariota is going to be the backup in any event (unlike some Twitter folks that feel Mariota should be the starter with Howell as the backup

I think that sounds mostly right but I wouldn’t assume because they signed Mariota it’s going to be Daniels. They likely wanted a vet regardless of the style of the guy they are looking at drafting. Might be Daniels but I am not sure this is telegraphing that…
