The Doom and Gloom begins

B Mitch and Doc were discussing the seemingly upward trend of season ending injuries, pointed to their own 'get ready' regimen that included more work in camp doing football movements with gear-on contact .

Figured their bodies adjusted gradually toward game ready fitness. Now with fewer/shorter allowed physical sessions the body does not get ready gradually, putting high stress too quickly as the real season approaches.

They also pointed out that most of what we're hearing is about high profile guys so reactions are a little more intense.

Two guys who are not medical experts... Their thoughts might make sense for muscle strains but you don't get tendons and ligaments 'in shape' - those can withstand certain pressures and cannot withstand others. I don't believe fitness or gradual work has any bearing on traumatic injuries. What is driving the modern uptick in those injuries is the extreme size and strength of players. Joints are not designed to take the kinds of force in play on an NFL field. I think eventually rules will have to be created to disallow a lot of the violent contact that is still legal today. I get that 'football is football and violent by nature' argument, but I think we can also foresee a day (if it's not already here) where teams cannot field a roster due to injury or on the field deaths as a result of violent hits occur and change has to occur.

I think we all realize, deep down somewhere, that these injuries are in-line and pretty random but there is that need to 'explain' or give cause.

The old adage 'this is football.... it's a violent sport..... injuries happen' always comes into play, just seems to occur at inopportune times for our guys and our fragile expectations of success takes another hit.

The good thing, recoveries from the career-enders of the past are on the upswing and the guys have a chance to go at it again.

Many of these injuries are non contact. Removing the violent hits during a game won't stop knees, and Achilles from blowing out.

Speaking about our 5 guys who are out for the season... 2 of which were clearly due to contact. I don't know that it was necessarily the speed / size factor which is why I suggested maybe an equipment change. Paul and Redd both were 'freak' injuries, where a cleat remained stationary in the ground while the rest of the area was forced in a different direction. Even Griffin's ankle dislocation a couple years ago was an instance where the cleat did not give, and his momentum carried his body with such force that SOMETHING had to give.

That's probably true Ax, but is it the non- contact injuries that are on the rise? I don't think so.

I'm not sure if they're on the rise at all. I know it seems there are just as many knee ligaments blowing from just trying to cut, as there is from contact. No proof of that. Just seems that way to me. And I can't recall an Achilles that wasn't a non contact injury.

Well, my personal opinions that the size of athletes is increasing beyond the ability of the skeletal system to handle it. Joints, ligaments, tendons, and even bones are only so strong and durable. You add an extra 100 lbs of mass to a human with the same knees, elbows, ankles , etc and expect that there won't be any issues supporting that weight - I think that's also a logical cause if so many season-ending injuries. And if that does explain some of it, there's nothing I can think of that can be done to address it.

I heard a doctor saying the same things. Makes perfect sense to me.

Not much to be done. Equipment improvements and better luck.

Wait! I know! We shoot them all up with adamantium!

Damn I'm smart!!!

I don't subscribe to the theory Bob cannot become a better pocket passer. I doubt he'll ever develop particularly fluid or instinctive movement in the pocket, but I do hold out the possibility that by mastering pre-snap skills at the line, to help identify where pressure is coming from, and then what adjustments to make, both at the line and once the ball is snapped, he can incorporate that into a game that also allows him to take advantage of his running threat. He may have lost a step, but he's still fully capable of threatening a defense with his legs. Competence in the mental game, coupled with a live arm and running threat, can definitely be considered an intriguing ceiling.

To me it's a question of how long the team is willing to give him to show he either can or cannot demonstrate clear progress in that direction.

All well and good. But I think you are omitting the most important reason he can't be a good pocket passer. The book has already been written on Robert. That is to give him pressure and blitzes and he folds like a broken arm chair. The best line in the NFL can't block all the rushers when a blitz occurs. We haven't even perfected the "outlet" pass, and where is Helu when you need him now?

I don't get this argument. Wasn't Bob, against the blitz in his rookie year, one of the most prolific passers in the league?

Not a big fan of the "book has already been written" argument, micks. When it comes to Robert, I don't think you can fairly say that.

A quarterback who has a solid understanding of the offensive play that's the been called, and its various built-in options, and also look over a defense pre-snap to not only get a good idea where pressure is likely to come from, but also be able to check off and communicate options in place to beat said pressure, has gone a long way in rendering that "book" less effective.

If Bob's going to succeed in the NFL, he's going to get a whole lot better/quicker at knowing what he's seeing, both at the line and once all hell breaks loose after the snap, and then trusting himself to make the throw, run, duck, whatever. Unfortunately, he's running out of time to show he's making that leap.

You know what my doom and gloom is? I am REALLY sick and tired of these ****ing bitches like Jason Reid, BSPN, PFTMZ, and other reporters (Keim) just lobbing shit grenades and people taking the bait and running with it. Its ****ing ridiculous how much people gobble up drama and lies just because they either want to believe it for the liking of drama or are just used to it and dont know any better.

Personally I think Reid needs a punch right in his fat ****ing mouth as a lesson to the rest of them to STFU.

and its funny to see him trying to pull Cooley in to back him up with the "several lineman hate RG3" bullshit story.

Easy, big fella. It's just August. :)

You can't contain the lion!! You can only hope there are plenty of gazelles!

I have no idea what that means...but I do hate the media about 90% of the time.

you are so right...only it's even worse!

because of commuting changes...I have been listening to these radio jocks pretty regularly since 2012. they attack their fanbase! you hear it all the time: a fan calls in, makes a point they disagree with, and the fan ends up being hung up on, called a moron, made the target of sarcasm. you hear it almost EVERY program if not every hour. it's a cultural rot. it won't end until fans either stop dialing in or pay attention to who sponsors these jackanapes and start publishing boycott lists.

it's disgusting. these people have no dignity or grace.

Oh for the days of Ken Beatrice.

Well, you can't continue to look people straight in the eye and tell them Griffin should be the starter when Cousins has clearly outplayed him and has a much better grasp of the offense.

In the end result arm strength and foot speed are irrelevant if you can't process what you see on the field fast enough.

It's not that Robert is dumb or slow-witted.

It's just that Cousins has a better feel for the sport at the NFL level.

Heath Shuler was another high first rounder that couldn't adjust to the speed of the NFL game.

But a few years later after football he owned a real estate development company and became a Congressman.

We don't know HOW good Cousins can be, whether he is a legit top shelf starter or merely a solid game manager.

But I think there is general agreement he belongs in the NFL.

I don't see any such consensus on Griffin.

My gut feeling is he is done in the NFL.

If we need to play him 4-5 games for the owner to finally cut the cord and let McCloughan find a starter for 2016 whether Cousins or other, so be it.

After 16 years I can certainly wait another month or two..........
