The All Things Terry Thread

I just checked Spotrac, and the details are not up yet.

I actually think this deal is actually more of a 1 year extension with a lot of fake stuff after that. I'm interested to see how close my guess is to the truth when it comes out:

  1. $30m signing bonus
  2. Guarantee this year's salary
  3. $1m Salary for 2026.
  4. That means the $30m signing bonus is essentially Terry's salary for next year up front, which would be the franchise tag amount of $28m + $2m.
  5. If they guaranteed this year at $18m + next year at $1m + Signing Bonus of $30m, that gets you to $48m guaranteed.
  6. I think they guarantee $10m of is 2027 salary, or something like that to get him to $60m total guarantees, but all guarantees essentially run out after 2 years and they should have an easy exit ramp after 20206.

MAYBE the exit ramp is after 2027. But I think it's 2026. DK's exit ramp is after 2 years.
So, let's see how close my guess was:

1. $30m signing bonus. We knew that
2. Guaranteed this year's salary: Check.
3. $1m for 2026. Not exactly, but I was close, $2.9.
4. $30m signing bonus essentially this and next year's salary? Check.
5. $48m guaranteed? Check. It's $44.6 at signing.
6. More money becomes guaranteed down the road to get to $55m guaranteed or soemthing like that? I was close, I thought he would get it at signing, but he gets it a year later.

I came reasonably close to guessing the contract.

This also means Terry caved to get a deal signed. Which is what he had to do.

Also, I have more thoughts on what Terry said yesterday at his press conference, however I as I was listening to it, I thought some of the answers were entirely disingenuous given he didn't get anywhere near what he was asking for. Clearly he wasn't going to say that.

If you didn't care to know all the details of what it was reported he asked for and then didn't care to look at the tweets to see what he received, then he came across great.

If you did both of those things, he sounded a bit fraudulent.

I really don't care as long as he catches touchdowns. But while I was going to buy a #17 jersey when he retired, now I'm not. I suppose he could earn that back over time.

I suspect there will be a few boo birds if there is a drop week 1.
I doubt it. I know this is not widely accepted, but I still think the proportion of fans who know/care about the details of the contract vs. the "Pay Terry" crowd are really tilted towards the "Pay Terry" crowd, and I think that might even be magnified in the people who go to games.

The cold reality is that the NFL has control over their players' pay compared to other leagues and they also have "supportive" fans who are easily manipulated into antagonizing the players' attempt to get more money for the work they do. The media also is under the "soft power" of the NFL.

Sure, but "control" in this definition is kind of semantic IMO. The players agreed to this relationship in the NFLPA contract with the league, in return for which they are guaranteed a s**t ton of money overall, the majority of all NFL profits. Pretty good decision to "submit".

In general you’re correct and I always side with the players over the owners. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t isolated instances of guys being greedy and trying to be paid way above their pay grade. That’s what Terry was attempting and I don’t think anyone needed to support that or feel bad for him. The players should get everything they can in their short careers but there is a point where individual negotiations get out of hand. I think that’s fine to acknowledge while still being in solidarity with the players generally

It's also the difference of actual cash, versus cap room. The amount of cash paid out to any player (or coach, or whatever team expense) is zero skin off the fan's back. I am not invested in saving Josh Harris any money. Cap room on the other hand, is very much a fan concern because how much any one expenditure uses up is less that can be used to become a better team.

I actually think the polar opposite, that the part of the fanbase that is/was ‘easily manipulated’ tend to be more supportive of the player not the league or the individual teams and vast swathes of the media supported paying Terry what he wanted (or at least seemed to to me).

In this case the two sides landed in a reasonable spot, something that was far from what the player was seeking and probably more than the team wanted.

Win-win in my book.

The NFL salary cap also doesn’t have the exceptions the NBA does or the LTIR the NHL does so teams don’t become uncompetitive because a big contract ends up with serious injury.

The contract they gave is actually way crazier than the two 1st round picks. Those will be in the 20’s (potentially late 20’s). The contract is nutso though

And of course we play them week 2

It looks as if Adam Peters was negotiating from a place of data where Terry was negotiating from a place trying to make a compelling argument for why he is one of the exceptions to the data that we see every once in awhile and tbh, I do think Terry's point about less tread on the tires is a decent one, however the other factor is most players that remain productive into their 30's usually have to find ways to modify their game, especially if their speed and/or separation abilities start to dwindle a bit. Terry might have to resign to transitioning into a possession WR in a couple of seasons, which ultimately means his value will also drop some.

I think Adam Peters found a good compromise, by saying he would pay him based on what he's done, but for future years it will be more incentive based because if he can prove he can still produce at that level you get the pay, if not, your pay will be less and if things go really south, there is a pretty safe escape clause after a couple of seasons.

I'm re-naming this thread back to the "All Things Terry" thread and bumping it because there is a lot of Terry angst which is permeating the game day, free agent and draft threads.

So, here is a spot to post anything about "all things Terry"

And, he didn't practice on Thursday for those who didn't notice.

I think the idea that the offense will be fine without him is a bit premature. I think with JD5 healthy and starting to ball out, the offense can sustain a handful of games with Terry sidelined (especially with a legitimate running game emerging) but this season isn't supposed to just be about having a good team, the NFC is wide open from the looks of it and they need their #1 WR out there and in game shape after Thanksgiving for those games that could determine post-season seeding.

I think the offense will be better with him.

However, last year the WRs were "Terry and a bunch of other guys." And it was fine.

This year the WRs are "Deebo and a bunch of guys" and it's fine.

What we'd really like is "Terry and Deebo and a fewer set of guys." And then I think it has the chance to be special. This assumes Terry comes back fully healthy, and has not lost a step due to the injury.
