The All Things Terry Thread

Terry's actions have had a negative impact on so many fans, easily seen through this thread.

Imagine how not only AP but DQ must feel. He wants everyone associated with the team to move through all things Commanders in harmony, one big happy family. His frustration level must be at an extreme level. It will be interesting how that plays out in the coming week(s).

The same with the way teammates will feel about TM, especially if this holdout moves in and affects the regular season.

I feel like it affects the fans far more than the players. The players understand the business side. They have a lot of respect for Terry. They can probably see the organization has all leverage though and he doesn't have a realistic chance to get what he is asking for. I am pretty confident as long as he comes back to practice with the intent to put in some work starting next week, they are not going to care. In regards to AP he really hasn't budged. They offering about 25 million a year. AP knows he has all the leverage, he understands the final number is going to be 27 or 28 million per year but he is not budging until Terry budges. I think AP understands the leverage here. The Commanders can lock up Terry for the next two years minimum--his best two remaining seasons given his age. At that point Terry becoming a decline asset due to his age. I think AP is willing to give Terry a contract extension with guaranteed money for 2026 and 2027 which would include one year of an anticipated decline. I think they are willing to do that because Terry is a team leader and out of loyalty. But AP doesn't need to get a deal done--and I understand that. So I'd assume he is taking everything in stride. He supposedly hasn't budged on his 25 million dollar per year offer which indicates there is no panic or emotional reactions with AP--he understands the big picture.

People need to understand business is business. Don't take it personal. Terry is going to have to backdown if he wants an extension because he doesn't have the leverage. Its that simple. If an extension doesn't get done, its not a big deal. Hes under contract this year and the franchise tag is a fairly reasonable 28 million next year (30 if he makes a pro bowl this year). Given that this is his age 30 season and the odds are he will start to see some decline in the next couple years having him for his age 30 and 31 season then letting him walk is not necessarily a loss for the franchise. I would love to keep Terry for his entire say 12 year career, but at some point he is going to be a second or third WR and I am not willing to pay him as a #1 receiver for what he did in his first 6 to 8 years with the franchise.

For what its worth I think an extension that has two years of guaranteed money (2026 and 2027) which would cover his age 31 and 32 seasons I think 25 apy would be team friendly, 26.5 to 27 million would be the fair market value, 28 million apy is a slightly player friendly deal to take care of one your team leaders. If I am AP, I am going to 28 million apy as Terry is one of the most respected players in the lockerroom.

DJ Metcalf deal was a really bad deal for the Steelers standpoint. For his age 29 and age 30 season, I think 26 or 27 million would have been team friendly, 27 or 28million would have been market value, and 30 million would have been player friendly. They gave him the 30 million. Key point they only gave him 30 million apy in real money as only the 2026 and 2027 years have guaranteed money (60 million guaranteed). 2028 and 2029 were he gets an average 36 million apy are not guaranteed and given that he will be 31 and 32 for those season, he is unlikely to see those years play out. In real life Metcalf got a player friend 2 year 60 million dollar extension for his age 29 and age 30 seasons. If Terry wants two fluff years at 36 million apy for his ego with no guaranteed money added to a 2 year 56 million extension so that the final numbers show 32 million apy that is fine.

Yes, I get all of that. My point was more aimed towards DQ (and of course us poor butt hurt fans :ROFLMAO: ) I see him as getting very frustrated in Terry participating. I imagine him seeing Terry as a giant undo distraction, especially if things continue with no contract movement.

The bottom line is the team has a number of players who are going to be due extensions if they perform at the level expected in 2025 including Tunsil as well as Lattimore and Luvu.

These guys are watching what Washington does with these contract negotiations.

If you simply cave to Terry you are telling these other players the sky is the limit on the potential ask.

You are also looking at a group of players nearing or at 30, and so you have to think about longevity and ultimately who is truly irreplaceable.

It may not seem fair to Terry but the business of football and maneuvering tells me Washington needs to be prepared to retain Tunsil first given what we gave up for him and the importance of the position he plays to Daniels health and welfare.

Andy Reid had a somewhat similar situation with Tyreek Hill who was a better receiver when he threatened to sit out and wanted to be paid a top of market deal.

They had just won a Super Bowl.

Reid traded him anyway.

It followed with guys like Stefon Diggs, Davante Adams and Amari Cooper that were signed to big deals like Hill was in Miami but none of these guys after getting paid has been a meaningful add to a team that has won a championship.

And each player was in turn traded by the teams that signed them in the long run to save money under the cap.

Couldn’t he just be referring to the cutdown and the guys about to get released?
He could be.

But, if he posted that and didn't even think about it in the context of the team's situation with Terry he desperately needs some media training.

To me, it came off as a classic subtweet to 17.

It has been said but it bears repeating. When you have an "agent" - real estate agent, sports agent, you name it - it is incumbent upon them to explain where you have a good hand and where you have a bad hand. You need to be able to have an honest conversation about what can happen if you do x/y/z. This situation running into the season makes very little sense. If the ask is 35m, I understand it a little better, but now it's nonsensical for different reasons. It makes more sense to think about forsaking game checks when the gap is wider, but on what planet do they think TM's market value is at that level? If that info is accurate, their ask is ridiculous. If their ask is lower, then giving up game checks in their situation also makes little logical sense, unless they are convinced that in Terry's 31/32/33 seasons they can get a better deal based on sitting now. I don't see that as a realistic expectation.

If it is not a realistic expectation, we are back to seeing this whole thing as just stupidity and a waste of time by Terry's side.

As I've said before (and others), the NFL is a business and the players engage in these business dealings as related to their contract. However, we like them for how they play fooz-ball, not for their business acumen. That said, I am pretty sure teams enjoy dealing with guys who have good business acumen (or solid representation) - it just makes things smoother, EVEN when that ends up costing them some $, it's good to deal with professionals who can make valid and convincing cases. and CEDE when you don't have a leg to stand on; credibility matters. I think this whole situation will royally sour their opinion of dealing with Terry. If Terry truly feels he has a lot of potential years left, that should have mattered at least somewhat to him.

It’s possible that Reaves tweet was a subliminal shot at Terry. It’s just as possible that it has nothing to do with Terry. It’s fitting for the situation but I’m inclined to believe it’s unrelated.

That said, there’s a lot of context missing from where Terry is reportedly at in his ask.

All things being equal, I actually understand wanting a DK-like deal. I can see why he’d expect to match that or 1-up it marginally.

But this is really where the agent plays a pivotal role in managing the situation. DK had leverage, as that trade doesn’t go thru, unless he agrees to an extension.

Terry is still under the last year of his last big contract and the FT is on the table at significantly less than he’s asking to be paid long term.

It’s apples to oranges, and should have been easily explained to set realistic expectations. I try not to judge a book by its cover, but can’t lie when his agents picture was posted yesterday - my first thought was that he doesn’t look the part. Dude is way over his skis and has misdirected his client so terribly that there is no going back.

Even if they find a way to get a deal done, every no-show game for Terry will be the talk of the town. Every drop will be magnified. The only scenario where fan disdain softens is one where Terry plays better than he ever has before and the team hoists a Lombardi. That’s the only way I can see clearing these clouds, no matter how this ends up.

I don't understand the mindset of proposals for an overpay, however slight, for the right to keep a thirty-something WR, even if his negotiating tactics hadn't been so misguided and disagreeable. Wagner and Ertz are leaders too, and they're playing for peanuts.

Instead, the holy grail should be the expectation that everyone takes less to play here, like when Lebron James took his talents to South Beach in 2010 to play with his buddies Wade and Bosh. Maybe it's unrealistic, but if Daniels takes that attitude in a few years, the Commanders could be set up for a dynasty.

Actually, with his Mom at the wheel, I don't really expect Daniels to do that. It's just a feeling that is probably coming out of past experiences which could turn out to be irrelevant, but my gut tells me that won't happen unfortunately.

Terry is not worth much in trade because of the contract ask and likely balking at reporting to new team without a fresh deal at 30.

Who is going pay Terry $34M AAV over the next 3-4 years?

If he does sit out the opener and looks to be a season distraction I would consider trading for or signing a veteran receiver as insurance to go with Deebo until Lane or another younger WR steps up.

If it comes to it, there is probably a team out there willing to give Terry a 4 year $33M AAV deal on paper to allow him to save face where the true deal is a sub $30M AAV over 2-3 years. DK’s deal is not actually true $33M AAV deal.

Could be. On the other hand, I remember how despondent Daniels was after the NFCCG--the man wants to win. And he'll be a couple years older and presumably more independent when it's time to decide.

The point is that, in the meantime, the team shouldn't undermine the possibility by overpaying McLaurin.

JD is going to be making a lot of money from endorsements throughout his career! TM could make a good amount too...if he played his cards right.

Terry's future may include proceeds from becoming a Big Red Copenhagen or Skoal spokesperson, if his buddy buddy Buddy has his way.

Just a pinch between your cheek and gums folks. And you can safely ignore that cancer warning.

We should activate him to the mentally unwilling to practice list.

Ill be the guy selling Buddy the Clown merch in the tailgate of our first home game if this doesnt get resolved (I dont think it will by then)

Probably. Be it would be fun if its Terry.

Terry with 56 million in career earnings. And the poor sap is only making 25 million this year, which as some fans have said is insulting -- keep in mind though he got some of that months back so the cash flow right now isn't that hot.

That's bad enough. Now he has an opportunity to make 28 million a year but..its not the 35 million a year he wants. Terry is just living a hard knocks life. Others (granted not too many) have it worse. Terry just deal with the rotten hand life has given you. I know for good measure it sucks that you are on a team with SB possibilities, too.
