The All Things Terry Thread

I think a lot of the fanbase is getting exhausted with all this, and i think it's important remember we're completely on the outside looking in.

The other day Terry walked up and dapped / hugged Josh Harris. He doesn't appear to be a 'disgruntled' employee to me. A lot of these things we're hearing about price tags are speculation about what the hold up is, and they're getting run with. There's a very distinct difference between what has been 'reported' by someone like Schefter about being 'substantially more than DK' vs what's effectively an educated guess that we've seen from others.

What is funny is reading Daron Payne comments. He is in the exact same situation. His contact ends after this year.

He's just thinking about finally being on a great team and getting to the Super bowl. He said he already has enough money.

Somehow McLaurin, with a similar contract, requires a larger pile of amazing homes and epic yachts.

This dude is a complete joke.

I really hate the Terry Tax angle and hope that’s born out of rumor as opposed to facts.

That an outright egregious ask. New ownership has came in and immediately transformed the entire franchise. The amenities, facilities, stadium, the culture, the QB, and the list goes on. It’s like going from hamburger helper to a wagyu filet and crab cake practically overnight. They have more than paid the “Terry Tax” through their actions. And for all Terry endured while here, he also gained generational wealth via a contract he held out for. The more I type, the more outrageous it sounds and the more I’d like to ship him to Cleveland.

Not to mention that he chose to stay here and be overpaid by Snyder on his second contract. He could’ve played hardball then and eventually gotten to FA or a trade, but he was seduced by the money and made his choice (which is now being retroactively framed as heroic and self-sacrificial). He doesn’t get to flip it and act like he did everyone a favor all this time now that things are finally turning around.

This "Terry Tax" sounds like it is coming from his agent.

I watched this, she was vague, didn't in the end seem to have any details. One of her points was Terry's side wants a Terry tax for what he's experienced. And Peters doesn't agree that he should be compensated for that.

I don't know if its true or not. But she's not the only one who said Terry's side wants a Terry tax for what he's endured. For me, that's tacky and it diminshes Terry's tenure here if he wants to get paid for being a good guy. Like I said before, its like me helping an old lady cross the street, and then finding her son and asking him to pay me $20 for doing it. If so, how good of guy am I?

This reads like he wants the years and the guarantees, but the total dollar amount is less of an issue. For an aging WR, that's what really matters.

On Keim's new podcast says he doubts that the contract aav starts with a 3. The only way he thinks Terry would get over $30 million is as a non guaranteed third or fourth year that he will not be collecting.

That's the rub. High guarantees needs a lower AAV. How much lower is he willing to go for that long term security? At a certain point if he tanks the AAV to Cameron Sutton's levels, the team would probably be happy guaranteeing most of that contract.

Payne's just relieved he wasn't cut to save salary. His production has fallen way off from when he was in his contract year. He has not come close to making the pro-bowl since. He and his agent must know there's no way a team would extend him at his current rate and no way a team would trade for his salary.

Terry received a "Terry tax" with his last contract. Sadly, I find myself becoming negative towards Terry, someone I never expected to feel that way about.

I agree. This stalemate is growing tiresome with the first preseason game only a few days away. The player that no one is talking about who I'm ready to see is Gallup. Everyone forgets we picked him up. He's actually younger than Terry. I wanna see what he can do. I cannot emphasize enough even without Terry, our upgraded oline will gave JD5 more time to find open receivers. Enormous advantage that the front office recognized.

Already has enough money, or knows he is already over paid? At least when Terry got his big contract his performance didn’t immediately drop off like Darons did. And this Terry Tax thing is a rumor anyway, though I do agree that if he is asking for it it’s a little tacky. But we have no idea if that’s really the case and I do think that for always doing his job with such professionalism, it does bring more value to what he’s worth to the team going forward. Disappointed in him right now too, but I’m not nearly at the point of calling him a complete joke.

Hopefully the "Terry Tax" thing is just an unsubstantiated rumor because really, how are you going to even begin to argue that you should hold Harris & this front office responsible for the Snyder era, and really, all things considered, yeah the team mostly wasn't any good during his time here under Snyder, but it didn't stop his checks from being cashed so what really is his grievance for those seasons....not being on a good team, well 60% of all players across the entire NFL could be wanting a "tax" for that same reason lol.

Feels like he's hung on both judging by reports but I can see how the guarantees and length of the contract is the biggest deal to him. The odds that he gets a big contract at 33-34 is almost zero. So if he can get paid big for age 33-34 now is likely a win for him.

As Keim likes to remind the contract starts at 31 years old, not 30. So lets say its a three year contract. So that's 31, 32, 33. Next contract he's likely 34.

If the contract is structured like Metcalf, they can get out of it in 2 years. 31, 32. That's perfect for the team. At 33 its almost for sure a big drop off. But I gather Terry wouldn't like it.

If Terry is that big a believer in that he will age like a fine French wine, unlike most WRs, then he is not acting like he deep down believes it. If he really thought he would be a stud into the 30s, then call this team's bluff Kirk style. Play out the contract, refuse to sign a deal, and then hit FA. If he really wants 30 plus in a big way then he'd get it if franchised and makes a pro bowl this year. He'd make I believe 30 in that case next year. AND, then he'd hit FA and get the mountains of money that he thinks he deserves considering he by then would show the league how great he's playing into his 30s.

Unsubstantiated rumor should be right up there with jumbo shrimp as an oxymoron. 😉

This is the other point Russini brought up and hinted that she get this from the agent -- this team not having a #2 with big production.

I think this is at best a neutral point. I get it from the context of this team doesn't have a dude who can emerge as a #1 if Terry is out. But the fact that Terry doesn't do 100 catches. He doesn't do 1200 plus yards, etc. It should have been easier, not harder, easier for him to put up bigger numbers without a #2. He had a franchise QB who threw the ball a ton last year -- and Terry's numbers were very good but still weren't elite.

Some within the national media, are annoying on the Terry issue.

1. I think Terry is playing no matter what. So the idea of Terry plays or doesn't play this season like this is a binary decision one way or another -- feels like a false premise laid out by some within the national media.

2. The idea of just pay Terry whatever he wants which is explained more simplistically by most as just pay him, he's earned, it, etc. Beyond silly and simplistic, too. It's like hey whatever you purchase in life -- just pay whatever the heck the store is asking for. It all happens in a vacuum. If the Nike store wants $1000 for that pair of sneakers, just pay it because that's apparently how life works.
The national media are generally only partially informed because they have to cover 32 teams, and they also will tend to bend to whatever will get the most emotional reaction and clicks.

I separate the "news reporters" like Schefter and Rappaport, as they are basically just information exchange brokers.

Almost all the rest of them are nitwits. That's a technical term.

They couldn't cut Payne this year. They would have a 29M dead cap hit.

Payne is in a different contract situation than Terry. He's under contract through the 2026 season. Terry is under contract through the 2025 season. Somebody above posted they were in the same contractual situation, but they are not.

Daron also was in a "can't cut" situation this year because of the large dead cap hit to make him go away. They weren't going to do that. Now, could you consider him in the final year of his contract because his guarantees run out next year? Sure. So he could be a cap casualty next year, or he could be restructured or he could just play out the last year. So, does he have something to play for? Yes. So he's not a cap casualty next year. But because of the 2026 year on the books and his 2025 dead cap number, they are apples and oranges situations.

I am not a cap expert but several local reporters (if I recall Keim, too) has referenced this season as a defacto potential last season for Payne as to his contract because there is an affordable exit ramp, and there is a good chance they take that ramp in effect making Payne either a FA or someone who perhaps would take a lesser deal in a restructure to stick around.

In short, the odds that Payne is here in 2026 at 28 million is very slim.

I heard on Lake Lewis Jr’s podcast (one of the beat reporters) that a subtle difference is when the phrasing that comes out is “granted permission to seek a trade” – that’s more like “yes, we’ll trade you” vs “player asking for a trade” – that’s more of an agent’s negotiation tactic.

The one thing that is just getting more and more aggravating to me is the playing along with the ankle injury. I'll eat my words if it turns out to be an actual thing, but I don't believe it is. I think it's time for some tough love on that subject. If you're holding out, fine, hold out. If you're holding in, fine, hold in. But we're done with this fake injury thing. Call a spade a spade. If you want to be traded, sorry, we're not going to entertain that at this time. MAYBE if that had been the demand in February when they could have used the assets to improve the team this year, sure. But not any more.

The first step is getting over this stupid fake injury thing. Let's get that cleared up. Because I think the next thing is going to be Terry is going to want to sit out games. So the team needs to take the ankle excuse away from him. So they can deny him game checks for not playing.

That has to be the next step. They need to just come out and say, "we've done all the tests. MRI, x_ray, Star Trek Magic Lights, whatever. You're healthy. Get on the damn field. If you don't want to because of contract stuff, that's fine. But no more injury nonsense."

Quinn talking about the injury is insane to me. They can't continue to play that game.

My hope is he has a good year, and they let him walk for a comp pick. I don't want to make the same mistake Rivera made...among many of the mistakes he made I don't wish to repeat
