The All Things Offensive Line Thread

The offensive line is suddenly a major topic with Tunsil’s injury, and when I searched it up I didn’t see anything but the “All Things Offense” thread and older threads, so I’m presenting the offensive line thread. Please feel free to discuss anything related to the offensive line here.

A few questions to begin:

Who should start at LT while Tunsil recovers? What does the rest of the depth chart look like?

Do we need to add another OT? Who?

Is Allegretti a good center or not? How’s his health? Who is backing him up? How bad did AP screw this position up by letting Biadasz go?

Losing Tunsil is a huge blow, no doubt we are a worse team for it, but they’re not going to cancel the season for us. A sliver of good luck is that we have enough young prospects and depth pieces to cobble together an okay line.

ESPN has Wylie listed at LT right now with Coleman as the backup LT and LG. I would guess Coleman and Conerly will be the tackles, but I’m not sure which side each would play. My prediction as to who we will start:

LT: Brandon Colemam
LG: Chris Paul
C: Nick Allegretti
RG: Sam Cosmi
RT: Josh Conerly Jr.

That’s mostly based on minimum disruption, but Conn said this is a good opportunity to test Conerly at LT, and I could see that based on his college career and draft position.

As for depth, I remember Wylie being okay at RT, and it sounds like they subbed him in for Tunsil today. I think he can play G too. I am not sure about Trent Scott. Interior depth is also a little thin if we move Coleman back outside. I haven’t heard anything about Matt Gulbin who is supposed to be able to play both G positions and C. Other names on the roster are unknown to me: Julian Good-Jones, Tanoa Togiai, Daniel Brunskill, Foster Sarell. I figure Wylie and Gulbin would be the next men up.

We should be fine as long as we don’t lose anybody else, but I’m sure we are considering our options just in case. RWJ mentioned Taylor Decker as a free agent target.

Believe me, I’m as bummed as anybody about Tunsil. I know we just lost one of our very few blue chip players, and it really seems that’s the kind of luck we have.

That said, we still have a season ahead of us, and people are discussing the offensive line in multiple places, so I thought this would be an appropriate thread topic.

I wouldn't move Connerly to left and Coleman to right. Coleman has been playing left tackle and left guard. Asking him to go to right is asking him to learn everything backwards. It's doable, but from what I understand it's not as easy as it sounds. This poor guy has been asked to play a different position every season. Happened in college, too. He was pretty good at left. We know he can do that. Even if it's next year, Tunsil will be reclaiming his position, so the least disruptive move and probably the best one would be to move Coleman back to left. Wylie becomes the swing tackle.

I'd also keep an eye on who's available especially at cut time. Pretty rare for a good tackle to be cut, but maybe there's a graybeard we can milk for a year as a solid back up. Someone at least Andy Heck level?

As much as people like to 💩 on AP, he has built up quality depth along the offensive line to be able to absorb a blow like this a bit better. We have 3 players on the roster that could take over LT while Tunsil recovers.

One good thing about Coleman is he’s played basically every position on the line except C in college, but if they really wanted to try Conerly at LT, another option would be to put Wylie at RT and keep Coleman where he is. So it’s not a crazy idea.

That said, I think the current plan to put Colemam at LT is good for all the reasons you mentioned. Let him keep developing on the left and let Conerly master the RT spot, and presumably Tunsil steps back in at LT when he is healthy (assuming Coleman doesn’t turn into an all pro or something).

I figured this was the plan. That’s what people who really follow the team were saying yesterday, I had to laugh at the national media types who thought it would be Wylie.

Washington fans tend to know their stuff about the offensive line, it is a big part of our legacy.

The depth was good, but sadly we’re already testing it before we play a game. It’s nice to have Coleman as an option, but as you say, we were also using him as our backup guard. I think Wylie can play guard, but he’s our back swing tackle now. I know Gulbin played both guard spots in college, so we need to bring him along fast.

I don’t know much about the other guys on the roster that I listed a few posts back, so maybe we have something there, but I would expect us to add another piece.

Wylie is now our backup everything player at guard or tackle. We did sign 3 linemen recently to compete for depth at guard and center. Not sure how good any of them are. I wouldn't mind a Cornelius Lucas type signing (supposedly, he's available. Not sure we want to go back to the future though.) Not sure, we need to sign a starter, but as a rule anyone signed should be viewed as having some starter potential.

Has potential. He's a tough guy. More of a technician than an athlete. Was rated pretty well in the draft write-ups. Have heard almost nothing about him in the camp despite Allegretti's injury which makes me think he's at least a year away.

Also, the nerd in me wants him to succeed because I think having a player I'd nickname the Goblin would make me happy.

I hear you on Coleman. I like him and think he can do a decent job. In that vain, I like him way more than Wylie, so that is even more a reason for wanting Decker. If Wylie needs to start at any point, that is troublesome.

Wylie has a lot of experience, and I remember him being okay at RT, so he’s a pretty good backup. After him there’s very little, I would guess Trent Scott, who has started 26 games in his career. Give AP credit for having some depth, but it’s being tested now.
