The All Things Offensive Line Thread

Issue is that reports about Conerly haven't been particularly glowing.. so now you have a liability at LT, at RT and possibly Center. Normally you'd have help on the weakest side.. now we likely need help on both. Teams with 2 good (not even great) pass rushers will have their way with this Oline.
I still prefer to give Coleman a shot at LT first.. and only if he is getting spanked look at available options at LT. I see FO bringing 2 OLs after cuts... i am sure someone decent will become available.
I don't actually think the Coleman is a liability at LT. He played it and played well his rookie year and last year when he subbed in for Tunsil.

I don't know if Conerly is a liability or not. What I just posted above is it seems he's not as far along in terms of growth than I would have expected. However, I would expect him to be at the same level as last year when the season starts, and that's not a liability. Now, if he regressed, then that's bad, and he would be a liability.

If Allegretti is playing, Center might/might not be a liability. We don't know, because we haven't seen it. With him not playing, it is a liability because we have seen it.

It doesn’t seem that AP is panicking about the O-line. I think it’s a serious concern. Allegretti has not played much, and there is virtually nothing behind him. Connerlly looked shaky against the lowly Dolphins, as well as the no-show run game. Our depth is being severely tested because of the LT injury. And Coleman is being flipped back to a position he has not played or practiced in a while. I think PFT recently ranked our O-line dead last in the league. I hope AP is losing sleep over how to protect JD. Play-action won’t be effective without a decent run game. A hope a decent Veteran Center/Guard falls in our lap after cut downs.

Interesting how after starting as a Rookie and showing growth and improvement as the year went on that some are suddenly so down on Connerly over one scrimmage. He’s a first round pick and he’s only 22. Give him a sec. He will be fine.

Yes, we need to sign someone to replace LT, and yes, AP is probably going to be more methodical about it than us impatient fans would like. But right tackle to me is not a position we need to be worried about right now.

We don't want Peters to be visibly panicking. That's how one gets swindled.

He did bring in four lineman for tryouts and signed two recently. I'm sure (or at least hopeful) he's circling the skies like a vulture awaiting cuts. If there is a trade, we probably won't hear about it until after it is executed.

Interestingly it’s been pretty much proven out that successful play action is not reliant on a good running game

Jordan Meredith could be of interest. Predicted to be cut after falling down the depth chart at C for the Raiders. He could provide depth at C and also at both guard positions. He could challenge at LG if Paul’s lack of mobility was a concern in the run game. His 2024 season was at guard where he ranked in top 10. Does raise a question on why the Raiders would move a top 10 guard to C

From looking at the list of IOL still available Mekhi Becton is the name that stood out to me. I guess he kind of flopped with the Chargers last year, but he’s only 27 and has been good in the past.

My guess though is that AP is going to wait and see if somebody better than that gets released on cutdown day by another team

I always thought Becton could be an Ereck Flowers type reclamation project with his tools after he was cut by his first team, but I guess it hasn’t worked out for him

I couldn’t believe it at first, but that is what the analytics say.

Yeah, and for a very long time now. At least ten years. I remember getting into arguments about it on the old board

Keim said a consistent "bugaboo" (his word) with Paul this camp has been quick pressure to the inside. That has to get fixed.

I really want to see what the OL looks like with what is now the projected starters: Coleman, Paul, Allegretti, Cosmi and Conerly. Based on what we saw in 2024 and 2025, I think Coleman and Conerly are going to be, at minimum, fine.

I am in "trust but verify" mode on Allegretti. I trust they know what they're doing there. But I want to see it.

Paul was ok last season. But "the first rule of Tandler - trust what they do not what they say." They were happy to let him walk and then he came back and wasn't given his job. And by some accounts, wasn't winning it. There is a baseline of "being competent" for Paul.

A lot of OL work is how they all work together. Having a real center (instead of JGG or a 6th round rookie) next to him, might help Paul a lot.

I really want to see what it all looks like together before I worry too much.

Except at backup center. They just CAN'T go into the season with JGG and Gulbin backing up Allegretti. That would be roster malpractice.

I do wonder who the backup guard is going to be. Wylie is a backup everywhere. The idea was the loser of the Coleman/Paul battle would be the backup guard. The Tunsil injury blew up that plan. So who's the new backup guard?

It's so hard to tell from watching the TV, but two analysts mentioned he did well. One said, he was strong at the point of attack but a little clunky in space and getting to his spot in run blocking. From my limited vantage, I saw no bad snaps and he wasn't flagged for a penalty.

Being invisible at center probably means Gublin gets at least a B for yesterday's effort.

Gulbin also had the block on the edge to allow Henry to get around the outside for his TD. Jones on the other hand looked like a liability.

If Coleman played well at LT the team would not go out of its way to trade for Tunsil and then make him the highest paid LT in the league. He was passable at LT.. (bottom 3rd of the league, which still ok) mostly because of how mobile JD was and adept in getting out of trouble. I would be ok with Coleman at LT if he is the weakest link.. but when you have weak links all over, he will get exposed.
If you watched any games last year Conerly was absolutely a liability. no name pass rusher would blow past him or through him and he still looked lost towards the end of the season. If he plays the same this year.. right side is a liability. He is the mid first round pick, the expectations are high for a reason. Plus, tackles drafted after him were being rated higher. While the team has been trying to build his confidence by talking him up, i need to see him play well to believe it. True, we dont know what Center looks like but depending on a 30y old center that never played the position in the NFL and is already gimpy doesnt inspire much confidence.

Disagree a bit. Trading for Tunsil still made sense for Coleman at OT. Switch him to RT and voila. The Conerly draft pick just threw a wrench into everything.

Coleman had a quality rookie year at OT. By that I mean (I think this was PFF analysis) that most 1st round OT's that weren't busts had similar "grade" trajectories. Which were starting rocky and inconsistent in the first half, then having a bump in grades and being consistent with those in the second half of the season.

Conerly had a bit of that, but not quite as good as Coleman.

Decision to trade for Tunsil. Fine. Decision to draft Conerly and shift a successful rookie Coleman into Guard? Not fine...unless Conerly really develops.

Also...Coleman is built like a classic OT, whereas Conerly is in between Guard/Tackle for size. It really is a curious move. I have to remind myself that this decision was done in part by the Offensive Coordinator and OLine coach that got fired. I would guess the team now regrets that decision.

I don't agree with basically any of this.

1. Trading for Tunsil has nothing to do with Coleman. If you have the opportunity to go get a top-3 LT, you do it. Period. Unless you have a top-3 LT on the roster. Which, while Coleman
2. He was better than passable in 2024. He was also a rookie.
3. In 3 games in 2025 when he subbed in for Tunsil, he had a 2.8% pressure rate and allowed 0 sacks.
4. Conerly had a tough start to his rookie season, and then was really, really good as the season went on.

I think for some reason there is this thought rookies should come in and be at their peak in the first drive of the first preseason game. There are people on the board already passing judgement on our 2026 rookies. I mean, come on.

Players improve and grow. Coleman showed he could play LT in 2024. He played well in 2025 given the opportunity. What landed him in the doghouse last year was his inability to stay healthy. That hasn't been a problem this year.

We'll see how it plays out.

I'm more interested in Paul's limitations and Allegretti's inexperience at Center at the NFL level. However, he was a center prior to entering the NFL. Also, when Biadasz went out, he did the line calls, not the backup center, which is somewhat telling as well.
