He did initially in San Francisco, but that's not what he's been doing lately. He didn't put up much of a fight to recover the guaranteed money he lost, and if he ultimately ends up in Washington, he's done himself no favors in future contract negotiations. He's essentially giving away whatever leverage he might have had. That's why this feels so different from a typical contract dispute.
I don't have some huge vendetta against Terry. I also don't think he's a whack job like Aiyuk. But it's not true that every player handles negotiations this way. Plenty of players report to camp while seeking a new deal—heck, look at Deebo. Others simply play out their contracts. Keim has said Terry was a hard-nosed negotiator behind the scenes during his previous contract talks as well.
Terry skipped camp, took public shots at the front office, argued that he should be treated differently than the typical 30-plus receiver, and even after signing his deal, doubled down that he genuinely wanted to be traded during the standoff. There were also reports that he was seeking something in the $35-40 million-per-year range. That's not standard behavior that every player engages in.
I'll give Terry and his agent this—they're extremely tough negotiators. If they think skipping camp, requesting a trade, or publicly putting pressure on the front office improves their leverage, they'll do it. Not every player is willing to take negotiations that far. Some are, and Terry appears to be one of them.
As the impasse continues, with McLaurin absent from the team's second preseason game on Monday, some large questions remain unanswered.

The Commanders awarded him a three-year extension worth around $70 million in 2022, a year before his rookie deal was set to expire, indicating his value to the team. Talks in that offseason became difficult, however, and McLaurin opted to skip part of OTAs and mandatory minicamp before reaching an agreement about a month before training camp. McLaurin went on to earn his first Pro Bowl selection that season.
Contract talks started similarly this time around.
