The 2026 Free Agency Thread

One plus to signing CJGJ and/or Burks is that, same as with Drake Jackson, they'd instantly lower the average age of the oldest roster in the NFL. Well, I mean, depending on who they replaced, yeah, but the point stands: we're old.
Yeah, but that doesn't really matter that much.

I do think the "old" narrative is a little bit overblown. Of the "old guys" (Guys 31+ in my book are old in NFL parlance, only the following guys really play:

Von Miller (36)
Bobby Wagner (35)
Zach Ertz (34)
Chris Moore (32 - and he shouldn't be playing)
Andrew Wylie (31)
Laramy Tunsil (31)
Deatrich Wise (31 - on IR)

Ironically, McLaurin is the only 30 year old on the team. If you want to add him to the list, you can.

If you want to add in the 2 specialists, you can, but eh?
Tress Way (35)
Matt Gay (31)

Most of the old guys on the team are backups or backups to backups.

We have more 11 players who are 24 or under, 8 of whom are starters or primary contributors (Conerly Jr., Amos, Lane, Newton, Sinnot, Bill, JD5, McCaffrey).

When you look at average age, Josh Johnson (39), Von Miller (36), Nick Bellore (36) Tress Way (35), Bobby Wagner (35), Zach Ertz (34) really skew the average age. But of that group, only 2 of them really play a lot, Wagner and Ertz.

He's coming back from a torn ACL, and he also broke his collarbone in camp, so I'm sure there are questions about physical status and conditioning (although he apparently had a good workout for Denver today). He also has a rep for poor route running, when he remembers his routes, but he does have big hands to go with a big body at 6'2" 225. Not quick or fast, but he is big. With big hands.
Tell me more about his hands though. How big are they?

Why thank you for asking:

If we’re looking at burks we must be very desperate and that may be a sign terry and brown are likely to miss more time.

I think giving a former 1st round pick a look is rational. Being the first team to sign one of those guys after they wash out of their original team, you can see if there’s anything to salvage. You definitely don’t want to be the 2nd, 3rd, 4th team to give these former high pedigree guys another chance, at that point it’s all name value and desperation. But taking a second swing on a guy to see if there’s anything there isn’t too crazy most of the time

Remember Ereck Flowers, as an example

I think both things can be true. I think taking a look is probably rational. However, if everybody was healthy and ready to go, I don't necessarily think they would need to give anybody a look.

I am generally in the camp of "more due diligence can't hurt" so why not?

But the fact they feel the need to take a peek is slightly concerning.

I don't look at it that way.

This club was talent deficient before the season started. I'd be more worried if Peters and Co. weren't constantly looking to add talent anyway they could....especially when the cupboard is bare when it comes to draft picks.
I mean Noah Brown severely lacks in the greatest attribute in all of sports : availability.

Why wouldn't you look to replace him regardless what time it is?

I think out of pragmatism and hope that Peters placed a bet in 2025 that he could squeeze one more year out of Wagner, Ertz and other 1 year gray beards. It was a bet that made sense because of continuity, chemistry, leadership, and frankly because we didn't have the draft resources or time to build the team up if the mission was suddenly about competing now.

Now, Peters didn't roll snake eyes with this bet, but the House is winning.

Wagner has lost another step and teams know how to exploit what he can't do well anymore. More importantly, Whitt doesn't scheme to protect him. Wagner probably needs to be playing close to the line of scrimage and playing downhill. Asking him to go into space and cover is just not working. I'd rather see him blitzing. I'd rather see him on the bench. His anticipation is still great. He's still a great coach on the field, but even that only takes you so far. Likewise, Ertz is a little less effective than last year. Harris got hurt. Lattimore has lost a bit and is also a victim of an anemic pass rush and poor safety help. Ekeler was way overused and his body couldn't take it. So, Peters' bets on one year guys and that guys coming off injury would return to form has worked out badly this go around. Deebo has worked out. McNichols was a good re-signing. Tunsil has been getting the job done. So, it's a bit of a mixed bag, but like I said... the House is winning. Peters is underwater at the table this year and while it's too early to say he can't turn it around it's feeling more and more that way. I'm starting to redefine what success means this year.

At the start of 2024, I kept preaching "This year is about next year" until it suddenly became about "this year." Right now, I'm starting to think that 2025 may be about developing for the future. I can't see a deep playoff run with this defense or with this personell or with these injuries. So, maybe this year is about developing and identifying the core and beginning to phase in pups to see if they can take the reins when the gray beards finally can't do it at all. At .500, we're not at that stage yet, but we're close to me wanting to see much more of Lane and McCaffrey, much more of Magee and Sinnott. I mean, really, how much does a Christopher Moore catch help us if we are not in a playoff chase. I'd rather see Lane work on his route running and develop confidence with Daniels. Same with McCaffrey. How much does Wagner being in the area but unable to make the play help us compared to seeing what Kain Madrano or Magee can do?

We're not there yet, but my lack of faith in our D's ability to stop anyone puts me really close to asking... Well, what does the bench have to offer? What does the future look like? If 2025 is really about building for 2026 or 2027 I can live with that. It would be more fun then limping towards a .500 season anyway.

(Now, if we get hot and on a win streak I will happily recant all of this, but for now... I just don't foresee glory this year.)

Another possibility

Chargers released EDGE Clelin Ferrell.
Ferrell was the fourth pick of the 2019 NFL Draft, but he’s come nowhere close to living up to those expectations and served in a reserve role for the Commanders and 49ers over the past two seasons. The 28-year-old defender is released to make room for Jaret Patterson, who was signed to the practice squad in a corresponding transaction

This lines up with the injury issues we’re having right now, but the reality is that these workouts happen all the time (and rarely get reported, unless the player has a recognizable name or pedigree). Especially once guys who were recovering from an injury get healthy enough to make the rounds and work out for teams, like Burks here. So it may be because we need help right now, it also may be just updating our pro personnel files on available guys which they do year-round in case even further injuries happen or other circumstances change.

Wow Jaret Patterson still at it

Yeah I noticed that, good for him. Wasn't he the only UDFA Rivera signed one year? Such a lame time in our history
Must wonder if the have interest in bringing Ferrell back

I agree Wagner and Ertz are aging and in decline, but this is overstated by fans. Bobby Wagner has 65 tackles through 6 games, which is second best in the NFL. Zach Ertz is second on the team to Deebo Samuel in receptions and yards and tied for the team lead with 3 receiving touchdowns. The reason Wagner and Ertz are still starting is that they are still productive.

Don’t get me wrong, I would also like to see more from the young guys with upside, I just think most fans are not giving the older vets enough credit.

Wagner is racking up tackles, but it’s mostly because our D is giving up long drive and spending an insanely long time on the field. He’s getting targeted in coverage and wrecked. He needs to be a part time player but it’s like they’re afraid of hurting his feelings, or fear the communication on D will get even worse if he’s not out there.

Bobby Wagner’s tackles are not “mostly because” of the time of possession. Sure we are in the bottom third of the league in that category which will make some difference, but there are lots of other players on those teams who are not the second leading tackler in football.

No, Bobby is racking up tackles because he is a tackling machine, top ten in the NFL since they started keeping track in 1994, averaging over 150 combined tackles a year, including a career high 183 in 2023. Last year’s 132 was low for him but still enough to lead the team and make the Pro Bowl, and he is on pace for over 180 this year. As Lombardi said, football is about blocking and tackling, and you’ll have a hard time finding a guy who tackles better than Bobby.

And there is clearly nobody better than him to wear the green dot. I remember having this same conversation about London Fletcher his last few years, and that is a good comparison for Wagner. Yes, he is slowing down which hurts him in coverage, and of course fans remember the times he got “targeted and wrecked,” which does happen, but he is outstanding in every other area (tackling, blitzing, run defense), and we would be much worse without him.

Obviously he won’t last forever, so we need a plan to move on eventually, but not now when he is playing very well by most metrics (and I would encourage you to check the numbers if you doubt it).

Oh yeah that was pathetic. I think it was him and Thaddeus Moss

Can anyone think of a mid season trade that immediately made an impact?
