The 2026 Draft Thread - Day 3

Getting a QB to develop as a 3rd QB tho stead with the goal of having them as a backup in 2027 is about a $8-$9m cap savings if they don’t have to resign Marriota.

For years the Packers would pick a QB just about every year. Train them, flip them, wash rinse and repeat.

I know literally nothing about the guy they picked.

But I love they picked a QB. It shows roster awareness for not just this year but future years.

And they just can’t have Hartman in the building anymore. So they might as well get a project with athletic talent to groom. And if it doesn’t work out, you cut the guy and do it again next year. It costs you nothing.

7th round picks are complete fliers. If you hit and get a real contributor, great. If not, whatever. But it’s good to take swings.

And taking swings at backup QB is absolutely valuable.
Is anyone really saying the guy from Rutgers appears to have Mariota/top backup level skills?

I haven’t read many reviews of this pick that inspire confidence.

Mel Kiper had a funny comment when he was talking about Washington’s draft - he was very positive up until Gulbin and then said ‘well, no one really saw the #7 pick coming’ 😳

Others thought the team could have made another pick and signed him as a UDFA.

Can’t speak for anyone else but for me, I’ve heard it stated numerous times that the contract can be ripped up and reworked as part of the trade. So it’s not that I don’t understand it, it’s that I’m under the impression that the current contract is irrelevant. Maybe I got that wrong?

I think you're right... I don't see us giving a pick for him, but if we did, it would be based on having spoken with him and pre-negotiating a reworked deal.

Either that or a conditional pick, with the conditions being he agrees to a reworked deal.

step 1, beat out Hartman. I don't think anyone expects him to supplant Mariota this year.

He absolutely has an NFL body and baseline skill set.

He’s not got what Mariota had/has (ex first rounder with lots of starting experience). But he is someone that could develop into a credible #2 at a much lower cap number than a vet like Mariota. That’s something we need to prepare for when we have to give Jaydon his next contract.

Yeah draft grades mean nada lol but make for good water cooler discussion. Loved the Josephs pick though and coming around more on Allen from what I’ve read.

Mel Kiper should be in the hall of fame as a contributor.

He’s also almost never right.

I’ll spare the rant about reviews of the pick, I’d say the best thing to do is just let it play out a bit before passing judgement.

And for those that say “seems like more of an UDFA” I’d argue that if you want a guy, draft him in the 7th. Because you never know if you are going to land the UDFA. If it’s a player with any upside, they will have options.

And that’s doubly true for QBs

Its technically not irrelevant its just that aiyuk can tear it up and make it irrelevant if he chooses to.

Many have suggested he'd be stupid to do that and many have suggested that he'd be stupid not to because nobody is going to honor it anyway.

At this point it seems that all parties involved are being stubborn and nobody knows who's going to break first.

Should at least be entertaining if aiyuk decides to show up and try to be a distraction.
I searched every way I could think of to word the question "can an NFL player void a contract?" and the only hits I got referenced void years, which is not the case with Brandon Aiyuk's current contract situation. Are you saying the player can simply void the deal? Do you have a link explaining this?

It’s all just Jargon.

Also, players accept pay cuts from teams all the time right? We’ve all seen this. That a player is told that he can accept a pay cut or be cut from the team?

It's not jargon, it's the team having all the control. Yes they can release a player, yes they can tear up his contract and give him a new deal. Know what I've never seen? A player saying "I quit" and voiding the contract to play for another team as has been suggested here. The Niners have all the leverage and all the control, none of what you are suggesting can happen without their help.

No thats not what im saying.

He cant just tear up the contract and go play for another team, hence the reason the niners have him by the balls until September 1st.

What im saying is that the contract can always be re-negotiated either by the current team or a team who is looking to trade for him.

What you normally see is a player renegotiating for more money, more years and more guarantees, it happens all the time, a team allows a player to seek a trade, compensation in the form of draft picks is worked out and a new deal is negotiated before the deal can be finalized.

What you pretty much never see is a player agreeing to take a paycut in the above circumstance.

The reason for that is in almost every instance it would be foolish, the player is better off waiting and forcing the team to release him so he can be a free agent and have negotiating power with 31 other teams.

However, this is not a normal circumstance, because of the voiding of his guarantees and his lack of fighting it the 49ers are in a unique situation where they have total leverage over him and yet owe him absolutely nothing.

He is by all accounts going to end up released but at this point possibly not until a week before the season starts and that will hinder his ability to not only be ready for this year but also get any real one year prove it deal because he wont be ready to contribute until halfway into the season.

This is a very unique situation and in my opinion its the one time where a player should realize hes better off working out a trade taking a huge paycut because he's going to have to anyway whether he likes it or not.

If we're serious about aiyuk we should contact the niners, work out modest compensation and then re-negotiate his deal as though he were already a free agent.

Everybody wins, the niners get something, we get our guy all offseason and aiyuk gets a little better one year prove it deal because he came in early.

In this idiotic stalemate, literally nobody wins.

If I were Aiyuk I would go to the NFLPA and seek arbitration. I’d argue that they are in acting in bad faith and by voiding his guarantees as well as publicly declaring he will never play another down for them they have in fact voided the contract and are doing him actual harm right now.

I don’t know that Aiyuk would win, but I’d push this.
