The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

I see Delane having a much higher floor and is not coming off a big knee injury. Teams avoided throwing Delanes way yet he still managed 8 INTs and 27 PDs. His passer rating was 27.5. I do like my DB's being good tacklers
Definitely. I'm high on both but like you said, the injury is a major concern. I would be more than happy with Delane although I am a little bothered that instead of him being a Skins fanatic like Cross, he actually grew up a Ravens fan. I'll give him a pass since that is most of ours 2nd team and at least he's not a flat out traitor like the Cowgirl fans from our area 😂😂😂

I think in part it's the era. The 'skins have been a bad team for so long that it's been hard for the younger generation to find reasons to attach themselves to this team. Add to that they were not only a bad team for 30 plus years, but one rife with controversies of ugly behavior so they weren't even loveable losers.

I think we will rebuild this fanbase, but Snyder did so much to destroy the goodwill of the fanbase and community even outside of the win/loss record.

Yeah, it also sucks we are discussing burning another high pick on a CB. We should have the stud Christian Gonzalez

We need to not be counting on Aiyuk. I guarantee Peter’s is guarded on that. If SF releases him very late in the process, he won’t have time to get up to speed with us if he even lands here.
I think Peters is smart enough to know that Aiyuk is just the cherry on top if he gets here.

But counting on a guy who hasn’t played in 1.5 years and has been … questionably stable is not something I would think he would do.

Also I’m sure he has some idea of what the 49ers are going to do. And how long he’s going to wait.

If you have two Quarterbacks, you have none. If you have a 2nd favorite team, you’re a child.

I'm a Skins fan through and through but when a team came back to Baltimore, I feel like you almost have to show them love when you aren't rooting for the Skins. In college bball growing up I probably was a Terps fan first but Georgetown was 1b. I also rooted for GW, etc. Georgetown bball was way more of a real 2nd fave compared to the Ravens.

It's actually opposite scenario but my pops is more of an Orioles fan because he's been watching them his whole life so even when the Nats got a team, he will watch them but they aren't his Orioles just like the Ravens aren't his Skins and I'm pretty much the same way which is why I don't like Delane being a Ravens fan but I will take that over the rest of the teams

It’s sort of rich for most people to grouse about how little the draft media knows, how mocks are mostly useless and just for fans, etc. when we know that NFL GM’s keep very close track of mock draft trends. I don’t remember which GM it was, it wasn’t Howie but someone like that, said he has a staff member compiling them and tracking trends all draft season. Because all the information from the entire league trickles down and coalesces into draft coverage at some level that even the NFL finds useful to track broadly.

Not to mention, most of us aren’t watching hundreds of hours (or even dozens of hours) of tape, building our own board, and then creating mock drafts from scratch that don’t rely on other widely available mock draft trends.

Sorry, but if you have any concept of who is going in the top-15 vs. mid-1st vs. late 1st/early 2nd and beyond…which is usually broadly accurate minus some shockers…it’s because you’re internalizing mock draft trends like everyone else and making that the framework of your discussion. We all (who pay attention to this stuff) work our own thoughts and opinions into this stuff but it’s still built on the same framework everyone else is operating from at this point in the process. Which is shaped by the sports media at large and draftniks specifically, with a garnish of NFL team information and a side of sports agent agenda.

Voice_of_Reason you’re the worst offender on this lately, casually dropping draft ideas that you only have in the first place because you absorbed them from the media like almost everyone else, but then constantly decrying how much useful information the media even has. Talking about draft ranges for particular 1st round prospects that you only conceptualize in the first place, same as me, because of mock drafts and draft media and bigger talking heads repeating what scouts and agents are telling them, etc. until there’s a “wisdom of the crowds” sort of consensus pool of knowledge that we all share that allows us to speak the same language for 2-3 months leading up to the draft.

You sometimes get feisty at the idea that NFL teams have scouts/coaches/sources or decision-makers leaking real information to the media but then there end up being informed 1st round mock drafts that are, in hindsight, pretty directionally accurate post-draft even if the exact details weren’t correct, obviously. That information all comes from somewhere, hundreds of online mock drafters, dozens upon dozens of media talking heads, etc. don’t just magically come to similar conclusions. The NFL leaks, scouts and draftniks talk, agents and coaches talk to people, that information trickles down into draft coverage and mocks, and for the major prospects in the first round at least, there ends up being a TON of accurate info out there. And we wouldn’t be able to discuss almost any of it intelligently if we didn’t all agree that it’s a shared pool of knowledge that we dip into to our hearts’ content, some deeper than others, and some with more actual knowledge than others. Hell, most of the analytic framework teams value (to whatever extent they do) was actually developed first outside their facilities by fans, media, etc. in trying to create a deeper understanding of their game. And that’s big business too. So the lines between NFL information and the media have become more blurred than ever.

But without immersing ourselves in the draft season media, which is basically like pureeing 1000 semi-educated voices into one digestible uber-smoothie of draft opinions to create a pile of conventional wisdom we all operate from, I’m sorry but most people would not be intelligently discussing these prospects, even the top-3 at each discrete position, at all.

We underestimate how much our own seemingly hard-earned opinions are shaped by the mocks, and the media you mock. We’re all in essentially the same hemisphere of draft knowledge in this thread and having conversations that makes sense because we do it within the framework the overall-actually-very-informed draft media creates and maintains for us. Especially when you consider how much the NFL usually protects its secrets.

But you can’t argue the minutia of the merits of these prospects in this thread imo, while at the same time knocking down the draftniks and mocks that create the essential knowledge base we’re all plugged into. It’s the only reason every message board, social media site, and friend group in the country are even able to have intelligent half-informed discussion about players most weren’t even aware existed until two months ago. Because while any individual might be wrong, lying, or mislead, overall the pool of knowledge is good and real NFL information is laced deeply throughout it. The efficacy of that information just diminishes the more variables come into play as the draft goes on. So by mid-round 2, even if a lot of stuff is still directionally correct, the specifics obviously are all over the place.

But mock drafts overall have a lot of real info in them, as a whole, on a large scale. Which is why I keep using the term “directionally correct”, because it’s not about specific individual leaks (though some insiders have a history of those), it’s about the general tenor of the conversation and the way the trends are moving, which NFL teams track as well, and end up reflected in the info we absorb. And lots of these draft media types do have real information they’re working off of, and it doesn’t end up mattering who has the real stuff and who doesn’t because it all gets absorbed into the fabric of the national discussion and we all end up with the general gist of what’s known.

It’s such a huge media event with such a strong tailwind of information dispersement that the average football fan who pays attention to this stuff, who can’t actually watch tape or grade prospects themselves at all, ends up pretty educated and able to formulate detailed opinions with articulate backing, that doesn’t come across as crazy or stupid at all most of the time. We have a whole thread of people here discussing this stuff and if we’re being honest, maybe 5% of us actually put in the work to really, actually know what we’re talking about in a vacuum. You and I are well-informed, but undoubtedly in the 95% if we’re being honest with ourselves. But luckily we aren’t operating in a vacuum and we’re all mostly able to cook up fairly educated, even sometimes nuanced, takes. To the point where we even feel able to critique our teams’ moves! That’s because the information environment created by national media, draftniks, etc. is so broadly well-informed that if we’re being honest even idiots end up pretty aware of the best current info we have, on the whole. That’s pretty amazing when you zoom out and think about it. Every year we come together and speak the same we’re-way-too-into-this language for a few months, and the discussion makes sense because we’re all operating within a pretty informed framework, with LOTS of good information mixed throughout. Directionally speaking.
I have no problem with the entire industry which has been built up around the draft. I have said before that I think Mel should be in the HOF for the industry he has created.

There are a lot of people who make their livelihoods at it. That's fine.

Personally, I listen to analysts I trust analyze players but I don't pay any attention to any mock drafts. And the way I consume most of the draft information I get when they come on pods that I listen to, like Keim, Standig, Galdi and Bram. I don't seek out any draft analysis. And then when there seems to be a narrowing of the list, I look at the guys I care about myself. Is it useful for the narrowing of the list? Sure. And I never said otherwise.

I have always said the analysis is useful. Never said otherwise.

What I'm stuck on, and will not apologize for, is that I don't believe a lot of the reporting in terms of "this player is high on this team's board" or any of that type of reporting. I think mock drafts are fun, but mostly pointless. That's my opinion. And when Peters said last week he has no idea what's going to happen ahead of them, I think that somewhat backs up my point that all the reporting on who likes who, and who is interested in who, is questionable at best.

Having followed the draft somewhat closely for the better part of 30 years at this point, I have come to the conclusion that most of the reporting is theater. And a lot of it is good theater. Even Standig, who has historically one of the most accurate mock drafts and won the "most accurate mock draft" at least twice out of hundreds or thousands of mock drafts, somewhat downplays his mock drafts and comments that it's a guess based on what teams need and what he hears. Standig is not an analyst, and I've never heard him say that he "watches the tape" or anything like that.

I legitimately couldn't give a crap about the ranking of a player on Mel's big board. Or Thor Nystrom's big board. Or McShay's big board. I find the grading of team's drafts downright insufferable. Because the grade is always the way the team performed against the grader's big board. Which is meaningless to me.

I do find the analysis useful. When it comes to the particulars of a player, and why one analyst likes that player or doesn't like that player, that interests me.

skinsinparadise is correct: the closer you get to the draft, the more things leak out in different ways which gives more of a feel of how things will go on draft night, especially at the top of the draft. I wouldn't be shocked if we had a pretty solid report on what Arizona is going to do sometime in the next couple of weeks because essentially they're on the clock already unless the Raiders don't do what literally everybody expects them to do. Which is possible, it's the Raiders. But unlikely.

So more information is going to come out.

However, also as skinsinparadise stated, it's also lying season. So deciding what you are going to believe and what you're not is tricky.

Which is why I tend to ignore most of the prognostication. Because it's an unreliable narrator. Agents are trying to put out stuff to get their players more pub, teams are trying to put out things to obfuscate what they are trying to do, etc.

I like the analysis. I don't care about the theater. And I don't trust the reporting. Some is probably accurate. But a lot isn't and it's impossible to tell what's right and what's not.

As far as I know, the team has still only had or scheduled 8 top 30 visits. They should be ramping up this week.

I know they cannot be deceiving but I like seeing who it appears they are meeting with.

Some of them are mid to late first rounders which feels odd but at this point, :whoknows:

I'm thinking a few more of the top guys and a bunch of later rounders, especially WR, DB, LB, Edge, IOL and TE

I'm now thinking the pick will be Delane and I'm OK with that. I don't believe he represents value at 7 but the position value and obvious need, that was the worst secondary performance I have ever seen last season, could make it the best pick. I still prefer Love, Styles is too much of a risk, or Downs but I'd be OK with Delane.

Why is Styles a risk?

I have some things that make me a bit nervous about him, but I don’t think he’s more of a risk than anyone not named Love (or Tate, who despite not having high end WR1 markings might be one of the safest bets in the draft)

Back on the top 30 visits, I believe these are players they have had or scheduled a top 30 visits with. And I know they have met tons of players over time at the bowls, combine, workouts etc...

Washington Commanders

Top 30 visits should be renamed to:

“30 visits of guys we want to get more info on that we’re not entirely sure we have enough info on so we’re going to also use this as a smokescreen” visit

Good characterization of the Rivera era version of it. Not the best correlation with 30 day visits to who they drafted.

But with this FO, the magic connections so far have been 30 days visits or combine, but especially powerful if both -- and that top golf event in particular.

I've learned to ignore proday visits-senior bowl visits -- they don't seem to be that meaningful with this regime.

A lot of smoke around Keionte Scott, guessing he's one of their top targets in the early 3rd. I used to think no shot he's there then. But now judging by mocks and more so the scouts reports that came out -- he has a decent shot to be there.

Seems like the fall is about his size and age, about to turn 25.

But his style seems to fit the Flores scheme, zone nickle, play maker, piocks, sacks, foorced fumbles.

I’ve been quiet on Keionte… mostly because I don’t think there is a slowball’s chance in hell he’s there at our 3rd.

But yes. He is an instinctive, aggressive, slot safety (not corner, safety).

Fits perfect.

Still don’t think there’s a shot in hell he’s there.
