The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

It seems like the more accurate portrayal is that the team drafted the guy who’s agent complained about the event.

Are we gonna get a 2026 version of "Top Golf" with all the top WR prospects? Lemon can stare them all down...

My concerns with Styles are how unexplosively he plays the LB position on contact and how high he plays as a tackler. Just no pop when he hits people.

Everything else is prototypical for a modern linebacker.

Yeah you want to drive a guy backwards when you tackle them to stop them from squeezing out another yard or two. That said a missed tackle is much worse and Styles didn't miss record a missed tackle in PFF database until Ohio St's last game of the season which was their 14th game, so missed tackles are not an issue. Maybe that separates him from like a generational LB prospect, but I don't see as a tier changer or anything like that.

Is that something that can be addressed? Are DBs taught to tackle differently than linebackers? I imagine for a safety the big hit is a little less important than making sure you get the guy on the ground since you are the last line of defense.
Not if you are Laron Landry.

Keim said in a recent podcast, not sure how they feel about Bain. I'd put money on Keim over Grant. It's not that I don't think he's heard that from some in that building. But lol if Keim isn't sure than I gather he hasn't gotten the info high enough on the food chain to trust.

Keim did say he knows they love Sonny Styles. Also, last year this late he had a sense CB-O line were their key targets, I recall that. This time he doesn't have a good read yet he said on what they are thinking about the first round pick. He also mentioned he knows they like Hurst later on in the draft.

Todd McShay's lasted podcast, ironically he dived into some points about how he pulls information from teams that overlaps perfectly some of the points I and Califan007 have made.

Nothing too revealing aside from Styles and Tate he thinks can go top 5 judging by coversations he had. He gives the impression Tate is loved more by NFL teams than the draft media. And Styles smarts and character along with his athleticism is revered.

He says teams see McCoy and Delane as 1A-1B at CB with both likely going top 12.

Rueben Bain Jr., Edge, Miami

Bain would not be on this list if his arms were a few inches longer. He's powerful, productive and bendy off the edge. He's an All-American coming off 15.5 tackles for loss last year. By all accounts, he loves the game.

But the 30⅞-inch arm length is still an issue, no matter how much teams wish it weren't.

"It's not nothing," a personnel executive with an NFL team picking in the top 10 said. "It's in between.

"The kid's played his entire life that way and been pretty successful. But I think it will pose a challenge. He's found a way to work around it, leaving blockers, using his squattines to his advantage. But you use your hands and arms on every play, trying to control the blocker who's trying to control you, reaching and running 60 times a game. It's an imperfect science, and you can't say he can't play football because he can. But he will have some issues."

Bain also did not test or run at his pro day, relying on drill work. That's an issue for some scouts because "to completely dismiss it without knowing the physical talent that we measure is probably more of a risk than the actual player," the exec said.

Despite all of this, Bain might just be the draft's best edge rusher, a wonderful blend of physicality and savvy. The risk assessment will be a factor for teams picking in the top 10 to 12.

Jermod McCoy, CB, Tennessee

McCoy is on this list largely because he didn't play in 2025 due to an ACL tear. But he looked every bit the part of a high draft pick at Tennessee's pro day last month, running a 4.37-second 40-yard dash and jumping 38 inches. And multiple coaches pointed out that the 6-foot-1 McCoy looks bigger in person than they thought he would.

"Really fluid, poised and calm in coverage, never see him panicked or out of phase, doesn't have to strain to make plays," a veteran NFL defensive coach said.

Evaluators must be comfortable with the 2024 tape to draft him, and one AFC exec calls that tape "good, but I didn't see a wow player ... so if you have any concerns about lower extremity durability, too, then you might have a tough time taking him."

McCoy has the profile to be picked early. But teams are doing homework on his knee and need to be comfortable with it. McCoy is visiting Carolina, which picks No. 19 overall, on Friday.

Makai Lemon, WR, USC

Scouts say Lemon's tape is excellent, but his measurables and predraft process raise questions.

"What are you getting?" a personnel executive with an NFL team asked. "I love that dude, watching him last year, but evaluating him through the spring, which version of this player will show up in my building? He didn't test great, had a couple of rough interviews from what I've been told. Seems like something is missing, or maybe I'm missing something."

Another NFL personnel source said Lemon's recall and detail of USC's offense was not the strongest during a team interview. If teams love his intensity and competitive demeanor, they could overlook that. Lemon's strengths are route running, running after the catch and contact balance. And, to be sure, plenty of star NFL players did not conduct great predraft interviews.

Lemon's 40-yard dash time ranged from 4.46 to 4.53 seconds at USC's pro day, according to reports. One AFC scout considers him "too small and too slow. Maybe he can overcome that, but it's an issue."

That scout said his best-case scenario is Amon-Ra St. Brown, who at 6-foot and 202 pounds has a similar build to Lemon (5-11, 192 pounds) and is also a former USC star.

We'll never really know how JD initially felt about.

Early on it was reported that JD and his agent were upset. Then it was reported that JD was cool with it but his agent had the problem.

Maybe JD was upset initially with it but was smart enough to let his agent respond and deal with it.

Bain is still high on my list and for some reason I see a lot of Charles Barkley in him. Barkley led the league in rebounding at least one year and his height was only 6'4".

Your bolded section is going to cause a lot of teams to drop him down on their boards.

I gotta say, and I haven't watched any of him, but McCoy seems really intriguing. I get that he didn't play last year on a torn ACL. But his pro-day seemed to have indicated he has his athleticism back.

I heard somebody (I don't remember who, but I think it was some draft analyst guy on Galdi or Keim) say that McCoy is the best CB in the draft, and would be a top 5 pick if it wasn't for the torn ACL.

If that's true, (and I have no way of knowing that), and he has his burst and athleticism back, that's an interesting option at 7. If he's your guy, I'd still stick and pick him.

In the event a top skill position player is not available at 7, I think I would prefer a top tier CB over whichever of the DE's are available or Downs. But there has to be one that the team thinks could be a blue chip prospect, multiple pro-bowl level player there.

I am not qualified to say which would be a better prospect, Bain, Bailey, Delane, McCoy or Downs. But I had to pick between them, I think I would lean CB over DE, I wouldn't really consider safety. And if McCoy had the highest ceiling, then I'd have no problem picking him.

Another thing to consider, it seems likely that the best player at the following positions will be off the board by the time we pick:
- QB
- DE/Edge
- WR (I think Tate goes before 7)
- OT

It wouldn't be the worst thing to pick a guy at the top of his position group, and if you do look at position value, CB would probably be the position which hasn't been picked yet. Getting the best CB on the board is never a terrible plan. Again, in my world, assuming there isn't a top offensive skill position player available.

And assuming the ceiling of the player was All Pro level.

Right.

Also, it didn't really matter then, and it doesn't really matter now.

Though Keim doing a hit for Sports Center outside Top Golf MIGHT be my favorite Keim moment of all time. That was brilliant.

Given this photograph, I worry about Love's depth perception. He didn't need to jump nearly so high.

Edit: Given the height of that jump I hope the league hasn't made radioactive spider bites illegal.
