The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

Which I guess begs another question….

What players would stop you from entertaining trade backs? Meaning, if they are on the board, there is zero shot you entertain a trade back.

For me:

No brainer:

Love

Is stop and think for a second but then make the pick anyways:

Styles
Reese

Longer thought but likely still picking:

Tate

I’m not sure there’s anyone else that would prevent me from listening.
I was originally at Bailey and Love, but Styles has really started to grow on me. Tate also, but that would absolutely feel like a forced pick to fulfil need at the minute. I’ve just read your post re Tate and agree on that perspective about him.

My thoughts exactly. I got so tired of coaches talking up safeties that our eyes told us just weren't performing. I never got the love for Harris either, he is the definition of Just A Guy which is why Downs was my early favorite here.

Yeah when I listen to Logan Paulsen for example say he likes Quan Martin but with in my book feint praise with hey he makes great plays and then sometimes he can be terrible. I am not looking for up and down safeties that are partly responsible for big play after play happening under their watch.

But yeah if its Downs, who again isn't my top want, the upside with him is putting Quan and Butler on the bench. Also keep in mind that Flores' scheme uses a lot of three safety sets.

So in short, if I had to pick one player that might make this most difference for 2026, on defense, Downs might be that guy.

I think Bayou is headstrong and believes in his takes, and that’s okay

Kipers new one. I like Downs. But I've heard in two different draft shows I've watched over recent weeks that they are hearing that Downs might drop out of the top 10 and they don't expect him going super early when talking to scouts or something like that. But he's a loved player with the draft media. I like him a lot, too. If I had to pick the player they take now at 7, am guessing its Downs, if I had to go with another it would be Tate. That is, not what I would do but what I think they do. And I'd love for the Giants to take Downs instead of Styles but I suspect in real life it doesn't happen.

2. New York Jets

David Bailey, OLB, Texas Tech

In my January mock draft, I had Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese here. In February, I went with Ohio State safety Caleb Downs. Now, it's Bailey. These are all good options for a defense that could use a lot of help, but the Jets really need an instant impact edge rusher. They were 31st in sacks last season (26) and traded Jermaine Johnson, further thinning out the unit. They have to find foundational players off the edge. And Bailey is explosive and productive, posting 14.5 sacks (tied for first in the FBS), 71 pressures (second) and a 20.2% pressure rate (first) last season.

3. Arizona Cardinals

Arvell Reese, OLB, Ohio State

The Cardinals weren't much better than the Jets in the sack department, tying for 28th with 30. Josh Sweat needs a running mate, and Reese has the instincts and burst to get home on the QB. Of course, Reese also played off-ball linebacker at Ohio State, and though he said during the combine that he would be an NFL edge rusher, that sort of versatility is a big plus. He had 6.5 sacks and nine tackles for loss last season.

4. Tennessee Titans

Jeremiyah Love, RB, Notre Dame

Here is where things get interesting. We haven't seen a running back go in the top four since Saquon Barkley (No. 2 in 2018), and the Titans certainly have a long list of issues -- even after aggressively spending in free agency last week. But Tennessee is committed to boosting the offense around second-year quarterback Cam Ward, and Love would take the run game to another level while also serving as a dynamic pass catcher. His game features 4.36 speed, excellent vision, run-you-over power and soft hands.

Love would be an immediate upgrade over Tony Pollard for new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.

5. New York Giants

Caleb Downs, S, Ohio State

The Giants have some options at safety -- including newly signed Jason Pinnock and Ar'Darius Washington -- but Downs is on another level. He's a complete football player, and New York should have no hesitation in taking him here (highest draft slot for a safety since Eric Berry in 2010). Putting him alongside Jevon Holland on the back end would help not only in creating turnovers (the Giants had 15 last season, 25th in the league) but also shoring up a very bad run defense.

6. Cleveland Browns

Monroe Freeling, OT, Georgia

The Browns are hitting the reset button on their offensive line. First, they traded for Tytus Howard. Then they signed Zion Johnson and Elgton Jenkins, and re-signed Teven Jenkins on the interior. Toss in getting Dawand Jones back from a season-ending knee injury, and this is a completely different unit from what we saw late in 2025. Freeling could be the final piece of the puzzle. His decision to declare for this class was originally a little bit of a surprise, considering he had 18 college starts. But I see franchise left tackle traits; he's quick and alert in pass pro, using his long 34¾-inch arms to his advantage.

7. Washington Commanders

Sonny Styles, LB, Ohio State

The Commanders couldn't stop anyone last season, and linebacker Bobby Wagner appears to be headed elsewhere as a free agent. Bringing in Styles -- my No. 6 prospect regardless of position -- to team up with Frankie Luvu and new addition Leo Chenal makes some sense. After a 77-tackle season, Styles posted an incredible 43½-inch vertical jump at the combine, a glimpse into his explosion. Washington needs good ball players, and Styles is just that.

I could also see Washington going with a receiver here, perhaps Carnell Tate, Styles' teammate at Ohio State. The Commanders' offense is looking for more juice opposite top wideout Terry McLaurin.

8. New Orleans Saints

Carnell Tate, WR, Ohio State

The Saints' main signings have come on offense -- guard David Edwards and running back Travis Etienne Jr. -- and that's also where I'd expect them to look during the draft. They need to surround second-year quarterback Tyler Shough with as much talent as possible, and the No. 2 wide receiver on the roster is Devaughn Vele (25 receptions last season). Tate brings a well-rounded scouting report, with solid route running and the ability to come down with tough catches thanks to his hands and body control. He'd be great opposite Chris Olave -- yet another excellent receiver to come out of Ohio State in recent years.

9. Kansas City Chiefs

Rueben Bain Jr., DE, Miami

After trading Trent McDuffie and losing Jaylen Watson in free agency, cornerback need some repairs. LSU's Mansoor Delane and Tennessee's Jermod McCoy have to be considerations here. But remember, the Chiefs now have two first-round picks. And Bain would be very tough to pass up at this spot. Despite 30⅞-inch arms that caused quite the stir at the combine, Bain is dominant off the edge. He simply finds ways to get to the QB, whether it's with his speed, power or savviness. He had 71 pressures last season en route to 9.5 sacks and 18.5 tackles for loss.
It was again the great debate of BPA vs premium value

I am absolutely headstrong and believe in my takes. I said that knowing damn well there’s a mirror.

You fit in that category, too.

Nothing wrong with it. But we have to be able to accept each other’s takes. As long as they are well founded.

I get most frustrated when people say things to say them and they are objectively, not subjectively, incorrect.

I know, i was shooting for a chuckle more than a call out but you're right.

Unless they pull a surprise and take someone who has not been discussed I'd be happy with any of the names we have been discussing for weeks.
Funny, as this thing has played out, I think Id'be happy with any of the players discussed other than the edges (maybe ok w Reese).

Jeremiah top 10;

Pick
1
Las Vegas Raiders

Las Vegas Raiders

Fernando Mendoza

Fernando Mendoza
Indiana · QB · Junior (RS)
Las Vegas used free agency to reel in three-time Pro Bowler Tyler Linderbaum at center, which should aid in Mendoza’s development. I still expect the Raiders to add a veteran quarterback this offseason, so they won't need to rush the rookie onto the field.
Pick
2
New York Jets

New York Jets

Arvell Reese

Arvell Reese
Ohio State · LB/Edge · Junior
I go back and forth between Reese and Texas Tech’s David Bailey here. Reese, with experience playing on the line and off the ball, gives the Jets more scheme flexibility in their 3-4 defense.
Pick
3
Arizona Cardinals

Arizona Cardinals

Francis Mauigoa

Francis Mauigoa
Miami · OT · Junior
Arizona lands the draft's top offensive lineman in Mauigoa. He's a plug-and-play guy at right tackle.
Pick
4
Tennessee Titans

Tennessee Titans

Jeremiyah Love

Jeremiyah Love
Notre Dame · RB · Junior
Tennessee addressed a lot of its defensive needs in free agency, which frees the team up to take my No. 2 player in the draft to help Cam Ward.

Pick
5
New York Giants

New York Giants

Sonny Styles

Sonny Styles
Ohio State · LB · Senior
Styles would be a monster playing behind the Giants' dynamic front line.
Pick
6
Cleveland Browns

Cleveland Browns

Carnell Tate

Carnell Tate
Ohio State · WR · Junior
It feels like the Browns need to land an offensive tackle and receiver with their two first-round selections. In this simulation, they’re willing to gamble that a Round 1-caliber OT will be waiting for them at Pick No. 24, selecting the highly enticing Tate here.
Pick
7
Washington Commanders

Washington Commanders

Rueben Bain Jr.

Rueben Bain Jr.
Miami · Edge · Junior
Washington was aggressive to fill needs at edge rusher in free agency. Bain has the versatility to play from the edge on early downs and then slide inside in sub packages, making him a nice complement to Odafe Oweh and K'Lavon Chaisson.
Pick
8
New Orleans Saints

New Orleans Saints

David Bailey

David Bailey
Texas Tech · Edge · Senior
With few young, established pass rushers on the roster, New Orleans could use some fresh legs off the edge. Bailey gives the Saints a true fastball to throw at opposing offenses.
Pick
9
Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs

Spencer Fano

Spencer Fano
Utah · OL · Junior
Fano can start immediately at right tackle and eventually kick inside to guard if necessary. The Chiefs will have excellent information on him because of Andy Reid's relationship with former Utah head coach (and former BYU teammate) Kyle Whittingham.
Pick
10
Cincinnati Bengals

Cincinnati Bengals

Caleb Downs

Caleb Downs
Ohio State · S · Junior
The Bengals can take the best defensive player available here. Downs has versatility, and his Big Ten pedigree will be well received by Cincinnati's decision-makers.

I'm warming to Bain over Bailey. He reminds me of Karlaftis, more of a power-type end.

If he can move inside on passing downs its a bonus and with the new found depth at the psition, he isn't forced to make an impact from day 1

Just say no

Your credibility when it comes to Tate went poof when you said he's a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

And although you could be proven correct, when it comes to the draft you have to work with the information at hand and you're the only person on the planet who thinks hes a 2nd or 3rd round pick.
Amigo, you need better reading comprehension. I said if Tate were available in the second or third round, of course I’d take him. And he would be a second rounder in next years draft. Please find the post where I said he was a third round talent. I can’t even take you seriously when you and a couple others make up shit to fit this false narrative in your head.

As for Tate, you’re right — total scrub. UDFA?

I think we all definitely get that Tate content is not your favorite genre -- maybe like a 100 posts on it from you? But if you’re keeping Tate receipts, I respect the dedication. Now I’m just curious: is he the only player on the banned list, or are there others we should know about too?

Because whether you like a dude or not, I think plenty of people here are pretty interested in hearing from a guy who actually played the position. And if people respond to that. I think its fair for me to respond to the response. I know ita a delicate subject and I apologize for engaging.

It would be like I am not the biggest Bain guy here. But if Bruce Smith weighed in, I'd hazard a guess that people here would be more interested in his take on the player than mine?
No I just don’t get how you and a few others can rag on me for a few be wary of Tate posts when you’re basically in a circle jerk with yourself over the guy like he’s Calvin Johnson and some can’t miss WR prospect 😂 I don’t want Bain either. Those are the two main players I don’t want at 7. And again, this board would be boring if everyone were in agreement with every little thing. Yall get offended if I don’t bow to this Tate hype that isn’t warranted in my opinion. It’s very ES esque in a way with the tribal cliquish behavior over certain players. I try to make a Tate post in jest and good fun to laugh about and then have a couple folks start attacking me again, it’s just hilarious.

I am not warming up to Bain. But I'll give it this. If he is as good as the draft media thinks he is, he's a no brainer at 7. But I rarely take the draft media's side versus the scouting community. Not saying I know for sure what scouts think -- but judging by what Brugler and McShay said and some of the PFF guys hinted, scouts aren't as into Bain as the draft media. But they also say he's polarizing. That is, some teams really really like him and some don't. I got no idea where this team falls on that spectrum.

But the draft media is pretty consistent on shrugging negative measurables and like to stick with the stats. Relating to this team, the draft media LOVED (RIP) Haskins. Washington to them got a steal getting him where they did. But scouts saw him as a 2nd rounder. Ryan Anderson was sort of a mini version of this narrative about Bain -- yeah he's not a great ahtlete, yeah he has sgort arms, yes he's short -- but he was productive, coached by a big time D mind, and was a baller so lol shut up about those stupid measurabes -- Ryan is just a football player and that's all that matters!

As I've said I don't feel confident that I can overlook measurables and just go with Bain's bend and motor. The draft media doesn't change my mind on this -- their take on Bain is somewhat consistent on how they see many prospects. I like DJ, and he can get funky. I recall he started mocking Jamin Davis in the first round before it became cool and talked about how talented he is. And of course he's nailed some, too.

I don't know about Bain. But if the draft media is right, he's a no brainer at 7. But alas i am not confident they are right.

Cynthia Frelund the NFL Network anaytics person was on 106.7 just now, and lol she'd drive some people here crazy, she was very high on both Tate and Bain including diving into the anayltics.

I don't get offended by disagreement. But when you get snarky -- people get snarky back. Comes with the turf. Then after it happens you circle back to hey you just disagree so why are people giving you a hard time. For me its not the disagreement. It's the snark.

😂 my post was not snarky, sorry if it offended you. 🍻

I am not offended. Sarcasm and snark are often responded to with sarcasm and snark. But we all could handle it. It's fine.

That last post from you didn't come off as snarky as some others to me but lol still a little snark. But its all interpretation. If you say no snark intended. I'll take you at your word, so all cool.

I do the snark sometimes, too. But lol, there feels to me a lot of it on Tate from you, and that's fine, but it compels me to respond in similar tone.
