The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

I am not high on David Bailey as a high end edge. I know. Shocking.

I see his value, though, and understand the arguments for him even if I don’t agree.

I am high on Bain. But I see and understand the argument against him, even if I disagree.

There is a reason these guys are as heralded as they are. Sometimes it’s production, sometimes its technique, speed, strength, film, potential…

But I think it’s important we understand why people like a guy or don’t simply because it helps with conversations.

I think SIP over the years has absolutely done that.

I think Bayou is headstrong and believes in his takes, and that’s okay - and I’d keep letting people know your take. But, I think it’s important we understand why people feel differently.

I’ve been trying my best on a different debate on these forums to do the same - it’s hard. But I do see their perspective. I disagree. But I see it.

I think Tate is a very good prospect. He reminds me of Terry and I think ultimately people think Terry should have been a first rounder despite where he was actually selected. And I agree there. So to me, Tate is first rounder.

In a different class would he be top 10? Probably not. But it’s not a different class. And he is the most versatile, consistent and available of the receivers even if he doesn’t have the highest ceiling of them.

What’s clear is that there are widely ranging/varying views on the vast majority of the so called top 10 prospects.

Still struggling to be convinced that sitting at #7 is a great idea.

Lets say they traded to 16, who are the dudes that would get you excited?

Tough for me to recall consensus on players on the various draft boards over the years. Some were really disliked by some, off the top of my head who had loud critics: Drake London, Pickens, Kyle Hamilton, Vita Vea, Micah Parsons, Justin Herbert and many more.

And we've all been wrong about players. It's an inexact science of course. Ditto teams getting them wrong. Ditto draftniks. So consensus doesn't bother me. But there is a reason why the further down the draft you pick, the less success you have. The top prospects give you better odds, not perfect odds but better odds.

In the range of the 7th pick, as to safe versus not safe propsects. In no specific order.

A. Styles -- too freakish, both physically and mentally to bust
B. Love -- same idea as Styles
C. Tate -- in spite of him having a loud critic here and I believe also a moderate size critic lol here -- to me he's a high floor WR. Is it possible he just ends up a decent #2, sure. I think he's better than that, but I can see it going that way. To me he's in that Drake London-Olave range of WR. Safe. High intangibles add to the safety of the pick
D. Bain -- I've been concerned about him, feels boom-bust. But my thesis is I don't know -- versus no not him. But plenty of people I respect like him including KDawg and the PFF guys and some draftniks borderline worship him. As I've said here plenty of times, if this team takes him I'll trust it. But lol, I am not endorsing it in advance
E. Downs -- really smart player, read and react skills off the charts, intangibles through the roof -- the pause is he's not anything physically special
F. Delane -- great season at LSU, lockdown, ball hawk -- the pause he doesn't have long arms, he hasn't run yet and some wonder about his speed, and his time at Virginia Tech wasn't as good.

On the aggregate though I feel more comfortable with these guys then the next tier down.

If I am trading down to the mid first. I think we are hitting more of an unknown prospect zone. Tyson with his injuries? McNeil-Warren a bit raw and didn't test as well as some thought he would, I like Mesidor but he's already 25.5, etc.

Not that I’m for blindly trading back, but that is where guys like Saadiq, some of the other receivers and Thienemann come into play for me.

But still, I wouldn’t trade back unless the blues are gone.

This mean the universe is going to force us to draft Bailey or Downs.

You wouldn’t touch Bailey, I don’t want Downs.

We’re getting one of them because the Universe has a sense of humor.

It's the guy that gets pummeled with the most hatred. And even though its mostly a one man band, that dude is Tate. I think there are more concerns here about Bain from multiple posters than the standard player -- but without the hatred but lol enough to put him in the running.

I think its going to be Tate or Bain going purely on past draft thread karma. I don't find KDawg hits on Bailey having much venom. It's usually the posts with venom that lol bring the player to Washington it seems.

Thienemann would likely be my target everything being equal. I liked him before the combine but the combine numbers really brought it home -- I saw him as an early 2nd round player precombine. But freakish numbers like that make him soundly IMO a mid first.

Saadiq i suspect goes 10-13 range. He's a hard one for me because I generally I am more of liking route runners than catch and run YAC guys -- but his catch and run are off the charts and he can block, too.

Kipers new one. I like Downs. But I've heard in two different draft shows I've watched over recent weeks that they are hearing that Downs might drop out of the top 10 and they don't expect him going super early when talking to scouts or something like that. But he's a loved player with the draft media. I like him a lot, too. If I had to pick the player they take now at 7, am guessing its Downs, if I had to go with another it would be Tate. That is, not what I would do but what I think they do. And I'd love for the Giants to take Downs instead of Styles but I suspect in real life it doesn't happen.

2. New York Jets

David Bailey, OLB, Texas Tech

In my January mock draft, I had Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese here. In February, I went with Ohio State safety Caleb Downs. Now, it's Bailey. These are all good options for a defense that could use a lot of help, but the Jets really need an instant impact edge rusher. They were 31st in sacks last season (26) and traded Jermaine Johnson, further thinning out the unit. They have to find foundational players off the edge. And Bailey is explosive and productive, posting 14.5 sacks (tied for first in the FBS), 71 pressures (second) and a 20.2% pressure rate (first) last season.

3. Arizona Cardinals

Arvell Reese, OLB, Ohio State

The Cardinals weren't much better than the Jets in the sack department, tying for 28th with 30. Josh Sweat needs a running mate, and Reese has the instincts and burst to get home on the QB. Of course, Reese also played off-ball linebacker at Ohio State, and though he said during the combine that he would be an NFL edge rusher, that sort of versatility is a big plus. He had 6.5 sacks and nine tackles for loss last season.

4. Tennessee Titans

Jeremiyah Love, RB, Notre Dame

Here is where things get interesting. We haven't seen a running back go in the top four since Saquon Barkley (No. 2 in 2018), and the Titans certainly have a long list of issues -- even after aggressively spending in free agency last week. But Tennessee is committed to boosting the offense around second-year quarterback Cam Ward, and Love would take the run game to another level while also serving as a dynamic pass catcher. His game features 4.36 speed, excellent vision, run-you-over power and soft hands.

Love would be an immediate upgrade over Tony Pollard for new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.

5. New York Giants

Caleb Downs, S, Ohio State

The Giants have some options at safety -- including newly signed Jason Pinnock and Ar'Darius Washington -- but Downs is on another level. He's a complete football player, and New York should have no hesitation in taking him here (highest draft slot for a safety since Eric Berry in 2010). Putting him alongside Jevon Holland on the back end would help not only in creating turnovers (the Giants had 15 last season, 25th in the league) but also shoring up a very bad run defense.

6. Cleveland Browns

Monroe Freeling, OT, Georgia

The Browns are hitting the reset button on their offensive line. First, they traded for Tytus Howard. Then they signed Zion Johnson and Elgton Jenkins, and re-signed Teven Jenkins on the interior. Toss in getting Dawand Jones back from a season-ending knee injury, and this is a completely different unit from what we saw late in 2025. Freeling could be the final piece of the puzzle. His decision to declare for this class was originally a little bit of a surprise, considering he had 18 college starts. But I see franchise left tackle traits; he's quick and alert in pass pro, using his long 34¾-inch arms to his advantage.

7. Washington Commanders

Sonny Styles, LB, Ohio State

The Commanders couldn't stop anyone last season, and linebacker Bobby Wagner appears to be headed elsewhere as a free agent. Bringing in Styles -- my No. 6 prospect regardless of position -- to team up with Frankie Luvu and new addition Leo Chenal makes some sense. After a 77-tackle season, Styles posted an incredible 43½-inch vertical jump at the combine, a glimpse into his explosion. Washington needs good ball players, and Styles is just that.

I could also see Washington going with a receiver here, perhaps Carnell Tate, Styles' teammate at Ohio State. The Commanders' offense is looking for more juice opposite top wideout Terry McLaurin.

8. New Orleans Saints

Carnell Tate, WR, Ohio State

The Saints' main signings have come on offense -- guard David Edwards and running back Travis Etienne Jr. -- and that's also where I'd expect them to look during the draft. They need to surround second-year quarterback Tyler Shough with as much talent as possible, and the No. 2 wide receiver on the roster is Devaughn Vele (25 receptions last season). Tate brings a well-rounded scouting report, with solid route running and the ability to come down with tough catches thanks to his hands and body control. He'd be great opposite Chris Olave -- yet another excellent receiver to come out of Ohio State in recent years.

9. Kansas City Chiefs

Rueben Bain Jr., DE, Miami

After trading Trent McDuffie and losing Jaylen Watson in free agency, cornerback need some repairs. LSU's Mansoor Delane and Tennessee's Jermod McCoy have to be considerations here. But remember, the Chiefs now have two first-round picks. And Bain would be very tough to pass up at this spot. Despite 30⅞-inch arms that caused quite the stir at the combine, Bain is dominant off the edge. He simply finds ways to get to the QB, whether it's with his speed, power or savviness. He had 71 pressures last season en route to 9.5 sacks and 18.5 tackles for loss.

I still find it hard to see both Tate and Styles reaching 7. One or the other, sure.

I’m playing catch up and only going off a small sample size, but Downs being constantly labeled a Swiss army knife on coverage was kind of off putting 😂 it’s a compliment I guess, but doesn’t smack you as must have top 5 draft prospects. I assume he’s really good at lots of things. Great.

I have been very impressed with Styles. Looks like a proper footballer and leader. Plug him in a sit back and watch for years to come.

Me either. I think one or the other is going to the Giants.

Feels like Reese, Bailey at the moment consensus is they are going 2-3. Browns take the Georgia left tackle. Titans take Love.

That leaves the Giants as the wildcard. Seems to be buzz around Styles and Tate for them. I doubt its Downs.

So for me, i am probably on board with whichever player the Giants bypass -- Styles or Tate.

That's the way I am seeing itt right now as well but of course, nothing is set in stone. There often is a wrinkle thrown in come draft day.

Well I’d take your guy Tate at #16 if I traded back…….

Ok, I’m joking obviously….

Lemon, although I’m back tracking there a bit, Ioane, Thienemann, Sadiq, best CB available without a serious injury history.

I am weird on Downs. I like him, he's a solid pick. When you watch him, he is always just about in the thick of the action. He's like a scud missle who knows where the ball is going. He has decent ball skills but nothing special.

He's physically not freakish. I know some think Harabugh drafts Downs because of Hamilton but to me they are both very different type of players.

To me the biggest upside of drafting Downs is I do think Washington's safeties are an underrated reason why the defense has sucked under Quinn. When you have the coaches tout Will Harris, journeyman safety who most would say is just a guy, as a lynchpin defender -- that feels sad to me.

The Flores defense seems to need smart players who are assignment sound and Downs is that. I love Styles and would rather have him over Downs. But it wouldn't surprise me if Downs made the biogger impact this season for this defense.

Unless they pull a surprise and take someone who has not been discussed I'd be happy with any of the names we have been discussing for weeks.

Feels more wildcardish in that rannge. i don't think there is much of a difference between mid first and the 2nd round in this draft unless there is a surprise drop.

Agreed. Ideally a stud lands at #7 and you make the pick and move on.

But something like #16 and #33 might be a nice consolidation. The Jets could do worse than pairing 2 OSU guys together on defense from this class.

My thoughts exactly. I got so tired of coaches talking up safeties that our eyes told us just weren't performing. I never got the love for Harris either, he is the definition of Just A Guy which is why Downs was my early favorite here.

To me the biggest surprise could be Delane. It's arguably the top need left on defense. They've now met with him twice.

This regime doesn't talk but it is a sign when they spend more time with players. I mentioned watching some Croskey-Merritt before the draft and I only did because of so many links with this team and him that I figured he's in serious consideration.

Big departure from Ron who almost oddly took pride in not spending much time with some of their picks -- I recall multiple players they drafted who said they were surprised because of how little this team engaged with them in the draft process.

With this regime its the opposite follow the bread crumbs especially the ones who get both the combine and proday visitis. And that goes double if they are invited to the Top Golf event the week before the draft, if I recall Croskey-Merritt was at it.

Which I guess begs another question….

What players would stop you from entertaining trade backs? Meaning, if they are on the board, there is zero shot you entertain a trade back.

For me:

No brainer:

Love

Is stop and think for a second but then make the pick anyways:

Styles
Reese

Longer thought but likely still picking:

Tate

I’m not sure there’s anyone else that would prevent me from listening.
