The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

So is Love more talented than Tate? Because I dont think he is. And take a look at the cotract difference between a RB and a WR....
I really don't know, but almost everybody I've heard who studies this stuff say that Love is an elite RB talent and Tate is a really good WR talent, but not at the level of the top WRs in most drafts.

That's a very summarized view of a lot of what I hear from reporters and draftniks.

Yes. A million times yes. Love is the most talented player in the draft. Tate isnt even top 10.

New NSE mick for the Commanders. Enjoy.

This won't be a fan favorite but I think Hecht isn't a bad pick at 71. This was part of a post I made in another thread earlier this week

One thing I had been thinking about last week was Center. - Our offensive line coaches were the line staff for the National team at the Senior Bowl. They coached the C that received the most kudos of the Centers Kansas's Sam Hecht who is a really smart good player and on the other side they were exposed to the top C in the draft Floridas Jake Slaughter who is supposedly NFL ready to plug and play. Perhaps they fell in like with one or both of the guys while working with them

My guess is at least one might reach 71 and could become our starting C after given a little time to acclimate to the NFL while being Allegretti's backup or pushing him to being his backup. It would also give Jayden a long term C to work with

Yes.

Don’t see true value in taking a WR at #7

I’d be happy for us to go WR in round one, just not with that pick.

In reality the draft is nicely set for us. I could see us getting an impact BPA at #7, I also think we can drift back in the first and get a damn good prospect plus extra picks.

All good.

I'm hoping that either Tate or Love are there at 7, both IMO at top 10 talents in this draft and fill needs.

If neither are there, it means a quality OL or Defensive propsects are on the board and that is where I would love to see at trade down, even if it meant going back to the half of the 1st round while adding a 2nd or 3rd.

Aside from Love and a healthy Downs, the rest of this draft is devoid of premium talent, but the depth at WR, Interior OL, Edge, LB and S are as good or better than most years

So are you assuming Downs will be gone by 7 or suggesting you don’t think he’s healthy based on the reporting?

I'd be really surprised if Downs isn't avalilable. Some draftnik types think he can fall out of the top 10. I aam not sure if that myself but tough for me to see him going top 6.

I agree. Just trying to understand Canuck logic a bit. He wants to trade out if Tate or Love aren’t available, then later says the only premium talents are Love and a healthy Downs. Not sure why he’d want to trade away from the only other premium talent if he’s available unless he thinks he isn’t healthy.

I think Downs will be there, whether it is due to other players rising post combine (Styles, Love) or that his injury concerns are legit

Health and depth at the position

That said (and being totally contradictory) if Downs is healthy, I would not have an issue taking him at 7.

I like Downs the player

I’ve said a few times that when it comes to style of play he’s Kam Curl. Always around the ball, makes quiet plays, sets up plays for others, rarely out of position.

He’s also got an extremely high football IQ and plays downhill.

He doesn’t have a ton of ball production, though, and that was something that our fanbase (not me) didn’t love about Curl.

He’s better than Curl there by quite a bit with his collegiate ball production, but it’s that same vein. He’s a guy who makes you better but it doesn’t always show why.

If he has a degenerative knee issue, I don’t think he’s rated as high as many anticipate. If he doesn’t… he will go high.

I’m not for or against. He’s on my short list but behind some other big hitters.

But I think he’s a special player that will make an NFL impact.

His brain reminds me of Ed Reed but his style reminds me more of Curl.

I loved Curl, so…

I think Love is more talented than Tate. But as to who I'd take its a close call between the two.

As I stated in a previous post, thinking about past draft threads -- soft hands along with the abilty to both seperate and deep ball tracking are elusive skills but historically based on my memory not that appreciated by some ES draft participants, nor apparently by some participants on this thread. Ditto those receivers that make hard catches look so effortless als a Devonte Smith. It looks so effortless that its kinda of boring to watch. It works big time but its not exciting to watch. The more attention grabbing fun watches are the speed demon YAC guys like a Concepcion, electric or a contested catch physical dude like a Boston-Fields. I get the mindset. I had it myself watching Pickens. That was the one I got fooled with. It looked so easy for him, that it was almost boring to watch.

I think I've appreciated it more then and now but thinking it over not as much as I should. Pierce, Terry, Pickens were yawn for most on the draft threads. So why not Tate, too. Same type of skill set on that front. Part of the reason why Pierce got the money he did was because that isn't a dime a dozen skill -- its a really difficult skill to find.

So many have wish casting with name that speedy WR that hey watch out for them and the deep ball but alas it rarely happens because its not just about how fast you are but can you catch the ball and track it similar to a center fielder in baseball -- the seperating, tracking and hands there is so much skill to it and its not a common skill.

But in short the lack of interest on this thread by some for Tate doesn't faze me, he's a good get at 7 IMO. But I do prefer Love. I'd go Tate though over Downs and I do dig Downs. I think the other thing hurting Tate is that he's not as good as one of the best WR prospects we've seen in the last 20 years or so and happens to be on the same team. But I don't care about narratives.

All good.

Based off the fact that WRs are the 2nd highest paid position in the NFL, having one on a rookie deal is very cost effective. Of course you still have to evaluation the options, but its a big factor IMO.

Interesting battle if its so between Washington perhaps and Tennessee for Jennings. McShay thought the Titans would be torn between Tate and Love at 4, Yates has the Titans taking Tate in his last mock. But if there is indeed some sort of wavering between Love and Tate, the Titans signing Jennings should tip it more to Love. So lol for someone who wants both Jennings and Love, hoping Washington gets it done for Jennings.

But for all angst about Tate. lol, it will be OK IMO if Washington takes Tate. He's a very good player. Hoping though Love or Styles falls to 7. But if not, I'd be jazzed if its Tate. My gut right now is it will be Tate or Downs at 7 because the other guys won't fall. Darkhorse at 7 would be Bain -- I wouldn't love that one but heck if they do it, I'll trust it for now.

Also top guys rarely hit FA anymore at that spot when they are young and in their prime. So its not an easy position to land. Terry is aging. We got a young QB. Not crazy to pair him to grow with young WRs. Tate just turned 21 years old.
