The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

Yes, supposedly Caleb Downs. Although watching the B10 championship last night I was not that impressed. Arvell Reese"s athleticism stood out (though he didn't make a ton of big plays) and Sonny Styles stood out more than either of them to me. Also the DT McDonald.

Best player on the field last night was Mendoza. Really impressive.

Kenyatta Jackson was in Indianas backfield several times as well.

I am surprised there was a game of the year last night and no one has talked more about it. From my inexperienced lenses (pardon me if I overdo):

-It was a classic defensive game where Indiana D won the match for their team. Both defenses played at a high level.
-Seeing Mendoza carry his team was thing of beauty and he was very impressive, working through all the beating he took from OSU D and after the first half he had. That WR Becker kid made some really good catches for Indiana.
-On the other side, Sayin (Sophomore) also played at a high level in this big game. This kid has been and is going to be star for OSU in the coming year or two if he continues to play for them. Their WRs are also very good. Both Smith and Tate played really well.
-NFL Teams will really need to evaluate Defensive players on both sides as I think there are going to be stars playing on Sundays.

Yeah Downs plays pretty well but didn't stand out. I still can't believe Indiana won with all the Ohio State talent. Indiana's D deserves a lot of credit. Ponds did well, he is small but will be a late rounder. LB Jones played big and had a couple sacks

Mendoza definitely had the top performance of the evening. Both teams got standout receiver performances from sophomores.

Styles had a really good night as he showed up all over the field.

Curry had a good game too

I think my want is simpler.

I want a few dominant players. I don't know that I really care about the position (Fine, I do.) but I want someone who strikes fear in the other side.

Right now, I think we have 2 potentially dominant players. Daniels (when healthy) and Tunsil.

McLaurin is a weapon, but not a dominant one. Even in his very good game against Denver we saw how often he was taken away be their dominant corner. I'd put both Bill and Rodriguez at least a level below that. For the sake of this argument, they are not weapons, but craftsman's tools that when used correctly they can get the job done, but just as a sculptor needs more than a fine chisel, they need the help of other tools to complete the work. Deebo is no longer dominant. Ertz is no longer a weapon. No one on defense is dominant. We have players who can be good. We have players who have the opportunity to step forward into a higher category. Amos and Sainristil seem to fit that in my opinion. I'm less confident about Luvu. Luvu has been a dull blade for much of the year.

Last year, I wanted weapons. I hoped Bill and Lane, speed merchants both, could fill that role and both have flashed. I expect both to get better. In 2026, I hope we find or develop players who can take over a game, someone who can impose their will and make an opposing coordinator fret. I'd love to get one more on offense and at least one on defense and frankly while I would prefer to get a dominant pass rusher to a world class safety, I'm almost convinced that this team needs a world class safety more than a very good pass rusher.
I agree with a lot of this, especially the desire for true “fear factor” players, but I’d frame a few pieces slightly differently.

McLaurin isn’t a high-end separator against man coverage, especially vs longer or more physical CBs. But his contested-catch ability, body control, and downfield tracking still make him a reliable man-beater even when he doesn’t get clean separation. And because he can win vertically or on deep crossers, defenses still tend to tilt coverage his way. Bill and C-Rod aren’t remotely in his tier, but they’re solid pros—you just don’t build game plans around them in the same way.

Ertz is still a great route runner, but the athletic decline is obvious. He brings almost nothing after the catch now and he’s not stretching anyone vertically. He’s a chain-mover, not a weapon.

Deebo at this stage is more of a quick-game / manufactured-touch guy. As a pure separator he’s limited, and even against zone he’s nowhere close to a WR1—probably not even a true high-end WR2 anymore. Useful player, but not dominant.

On defense, Luvu is an absolute dog, no question about his effort or motor. But even going back to Carolina, he’s always been a mediocre NFL athlete, and when your game is built on effort, instincts, and violence rather than burst or range, you get that up-and-down profile. High floor, low ceiling.

Sainristil is a tough eval because he’s such a high-effort, physical player, but you’re right about the limitations. He’ll tackle, he’ll fill the alley, he’ll compete like crazy, but as a man-coverage corner, I doubt he ever becomes more than a serviceable starter. In a heavy-zone system he can play inside or outside, and his run support probably nudges him toward the slot—but in a man-heavy system, where inside defenders get put in conflict more often and run fits are slower, he’s probably better on the perimeter.

Amos was solid for a rookie. Looks like a guy who can be a steady 7–8 year starter, but I don’t see star traits yet.

And honestly, the last two games say a lot about Quinn—ton of zone variety, constant pre-snap disguise, muddying reads for the QB. But the fact remains: in a zone-heavy defense, a consistent four-man pass rush matters more than a top-end safety. Zones inherently have windows; if you can’t squeeze them with pressure, you become a “bend but don’t break” unit, and eventually someone breaks you.

So yeah—I’m with you on needing true dominators. One more on offense, and at least one on defense, ideally a real difference-maker up front. A star safety helps, but without a legit rush, the ceiling of the defense stays capped.

Wouldn’t be the worst thing to hold serve at LB and TE with Wagner and Ertz. Not ideal, but to your point, a couple big improvements elsewhere could make all the difference. Same deal at safety.

I’m with you now on corner and that’s how I see it too. Might have to be new bodies as Jones is a FA and Iggy was already on the trade block (so he might not wanna return), but that level of talent would work as a decent baseline.

What I think I was getting at was I didn’t want to go backwards at LB (not replacing Wagner), TE (not replacing Ertz), while also not improving S and maybe having corner depth issues with only Amos/Sainristil currently on the 2026 roster. And to do that, we’d have to spend a decent chunk on TE and LB (along with maybe a starting level corner as the third in a starting trio). Oh, and QB too. So that’s 8-10mil each for Wagner, Ertz and Mariota, which when paired with extending Tunsil, eats into our cap space pretty quickly. Should still leave enough though for a good WR and Edge, as you say.

If they pay 35/36 year old Ertz/Wagner $10M flat each on the cap again and rely on them again, they’ll get what they deserve.

lol, its cool you don't need to search, but yeah Mesidor is a dude I talked about mulltiple times in detail, so we are on the same page.

You seem to be every now and then throwing some of the common names listed at edge after the top 3 here and there in different posts saying you like them -- off the top of my head: Overton, Mesidor, Howell, Young. There are others, too I don't think you've mentioned yet: TJ Parker, Height, Uiagaleleli. And more.

To your point, I gather since you mention you like this edge, and then move on to another edge, you like the idea of trading down?

I do prefer looking to trade down when possible. LOL, I'm just mulling over whether or not to bother doing the rankings thing this go around. It just helps me take a mental break and why it's random with me.

I do like Parker and Height a bit mixed on the Oregon dude prefer Overton, Jacas, Zion Young, Patrick Payton.

WR I like Chris Bell
RB I like Jonah Coleman

I think this game illustrates what a dynamic stud back could do with this line to take the pressure off Jayden. I’m completely with you on the need for this guy but I’m hoping the answer is Hall
I am good either way. Love or Hall.

I have no faith that we’d be happy with the usage of such a player with Kliff calling the plays. Run game was working great but you wouldn’t know it because we abandoned it on the way to a multi-score deficit. I’m not sure I believe Kliff wouldn’t piss me off underutilizing such a weapon at RB.

We really can't send our 1st at a position we could address in FA. If Hall comes free, he should be the guy over Love.

Still very much leaning WR with our 1st. Terry will be 31, Aiyuk if we signed him would be 28 with an injury history, Pickens is the only guy who MIGHT be up to the task of taking Terry's spot at the top and be able to do it for a while without major injury concerns BUT 1) we have to be careful of his headcase issues, and 2) he will cost an insane amount of money. And beyond Aiyuk and Pickens, no one else is a #1 caliber guy. Doubs and Pierce are nice options but are really more #2 guys at best.

You have to prepare for a future without Terry, so unless you think you can pull another 3rd round miracle out of your hat like Terry was, you should probably be finding his replacement now. Tyson would be a dream but Tate would be great too, mentor one Ohio State alum with another.

Go buy the 2 or 3 best edge rushers on the market to pair with Armstrong and Martin and build a stable of #2 guys. It won't be a top defense but it'll still get you to like a B level defense, but the line between an A offense and a D offense can't be a 31 yo Terry like it was this year.

It kills me knowing the second and fourth draft picks that we lost. I know that Tunsil is a good left tackle, but still.

Agree 100 percent. This offense needs a sure fire RB1.

Kliff has a very particular way he wants to win. It's obvious.
He wants to run the ball a certain number of times. He wants to pass. No caveats there.
He will run the ball, but it's an afterthought, and it shows.

When he runs in a surprising way, it's good for 10-15 yards sometimes. Sure, if we had a better RB, maybe - maybe - that play could be a TD. That just means we end up losing by 7 instead of 20. I do not think Kliff increases his run calls with better RBs. Defenses are willing to give us those breaks because they know that Kliff has a limit on his run plays essentially. He doesn't break tendency enough.

I would stick with drafting 7th rounders or being cheap on RB if you are keeping Kliff around. I don't have all of the data, but from what I can see - that seems to be the right move.

4 downs at the 1 and we could not punch it in?

If this club winds up with a top 3,4,5 pick, they have no business drafting there. This should be a no brainer trade down to acquire more picks to address more holes.

Tired of paint and spackle. Need a serious effort to get younger/deeper.

Feel like a skipping record every December........
