He also has some familiarity with Terry, Bates, etc. And yes, he would clearly be better than Johnson or Hartman.

Whether or not QB3 is an issue depends on the status of QB2. Mariota has been out with an injury, and if that continues, then I think an upgrade at QB3 is advisable. I like Heinicke but maybe CJ Beathard would be good. I doubt we make a move though.

Hopefully Mariota is fine, he was an ideal backup last year. We’re really lucky to have him, I believe he could still start in this league, but do we know his status for week 1?

Yeah, we all saw how Terry struggled with Jayden when we moved on from Tay and Sam and Bates receptions took a big hit, when our new QB came in.

TH having familiarity with Terry and Big John is hysterical. Probably a tad more important to have some familiarity with Kliff.

But how did our receivers look with Josh Johnson and Sam Hartman? Because that’s the comparison being made here.

I agree familiarity with Kliff would be a plus, but Joshua Dobbs is unavailable and Colt McCoy is retired. :LOL:

It’s all idle talk anyway, I doubt we make a move at QB3. I hope we don’t need him, but worst case scenario I hope Mariota is okay when and if we do.

Your snark really isn't unnecessary. It's pretty simple. Mariota has barely played/practiced this offseason. Heinicke is available and definitely an upgrade over Johnson. He is literally statistically superior in nearly every category and has started 3 or 4 times more than than Johnson. You don't have to like the conversation, but it's a perfectly logical one.

The games aren't played on the stat sheet and comparing preseason performances of QBs with no game planning, to another terrible QB that we definitely know is bad, regardless of scheme, seems pretty silly. And I'm glad you enjoyed my snark.

I wonder what happened with Driskel.
 
Im a little surprised kendrick bourne has decided to wait until after week one to sign a contract.
On one hand i get that an injury or two could add to his value and get him a little bit more money but on the other signing after week one means your contract isn't guaranteed and its risky for a player of his middling stature to wait, the two teams currently interested could sour and leave him out in the cold.

A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush right?
 
The vet WR market is rough, would it be the worst thing in the world if we called Crowder back in? Ideally we would have found an upgrade to his role but clearly the vets in camp disappointed. At minimum he had JD5's trust.
 
glad we didn't get amari cooper as a backup plan. that woulda been a kick in the balls.

Slot WR isn’t our problem, we don’t have room for Crowder there unless someone gets hurt. Outside WR depth is what’s needed, really

Loved APR as a Hokie, but some of that is because the Hokies don't give us much to cheer about. Who would you cut to sign him?

It is a logical conversation to have. However, I disagree with your opinion. Reasonable people can disagree. But I will tell you why I disagree.

I'd take Johnson over Heinicke. Why? Because he can throw the ball to the sideline. We have 9 years of evidence Heinicke can't do that. He just got released from the Chargers, who traded for him.

He hasn't gotten better since he left us. If anything, he's gotten worse.

He also doesn't know Kliff's system, the only system he's had any degree of success is a system which is out of the league, the Norv variant of the Air Coryell system.

I get that he has moxie, but he's so physically limited, at this point, he just can't run an NFL offense. All he can do is hand he ball off and then try and pick up 3rd downs.

I'm not in love with Johnson or Hartman. But Johnson at least can still make all the throws, and has quicks. If we got to our third string QB, I'd have more faith Kliff could keep the construct of the offense similar with Johnson than have to adjust it to Heinicke.

In fact, one of the staples of the offense, the quick bubble screen outside just to get the ball into the hands of a WR in replacement of a running play would almost be out of the playbook entirely, because Heinicke doesn't have the arm to get the ball outside fast enough to allow the play to be succesful. We saw the evidence of this through the entire pre-season, when Hartman attempted the same types of play, the ball was so slow getting to the WR, it gave the DBs enough time to close and the play was over before it began.

There is a bare minimum floor for arm strength in the NFL which you have to have in order to be in the league. I give credit to Heinicke he managed to stay in the league the last 4 years without it. The first number of years of his career, he was struggling to catch on, and was on and off rosters before being out of the league in 2019.

If he had just a little more arm, he would have had the opportunity to be a good NFL QB. But he didn't. I wish I could play power forward for the Nicks. But it's just not going to happen.
