As for Gay, I'd feel better if I didn't hear he was shaky late in camp, its not just the misses in the preseason but the short line drive kick offs which led to some big returns -- coupled with Colts fans on X making fun of the signing at the time. I ignored all the scoffing by Colts fans at the time. Mind you, the Cots released him. it wasn't a straight FA signing. But now I take a little more note of their scoffing.

I like Peters but he makes mistakes. All GMs do.

As for whether Gay is a mistake or not. Will see. Don't know.

My gut is he ends up a lot like Slye. Mostly good but on the erratic side especially in the clutch. My main concern is does his struggles with longer attempts extend to kickoffs like it did in the preseason -- if so that's not like Slye, that's more like Hopkins.

I read last night that the rules around the tag mean he’d get 120% of what he’s making now, which would be $38M for the one year. I’d have to do more research to see why that would be the case for him (rather than the usual average of the top-5 salaries at his position) because that’s not something I’d read before

If that’s not the case, then it’s scarier with him, yeah
 
$4M is hardly a huge amount of money if Washington sees a young kicker that can kick from distance and is coming in on a low budget deal to prove himself during the NFL regular season.

Teams 'have faith' in kickers until they don't and that often is measured in days and weeks rather than seasons.

One bad game with 2 missed field goals that lead to a loss have a team bringing in guys for tryouts.

If Gay has issues with kicking from distance and on kickoffs then that is a problem.

The other kickers in our division are GOOD from distance and on kickoffs.

Dallas had one of the best in the NFL last year.

Again, this is an area I would not want to fall flat on because we are tone deaf to a player's performance like Gay that shows he is a veteran that is struggling.

I sure hope that's the reason otherwise he is a liability on kickoffs. It is a game of field position.
 
But in today's NFL kickers have become so much more accurate, teams like the Cowboys and Eagles have kickers that are money from 50 yards plus to win games.

Right now I don't think Washington can be confident of Gay outside of 40 yards so that puts a LOT more pressure on Daniels and Co. to be near perfect in executing the offense.

I am aggressive and I would be looking at the Sauls guy and the guy in New England that are younger and likely to be cheaper so eating the $4M on Gay would pretty much be a wash in 2025.

If Gay was a highly rated rookie you could say it was growing pains, but anytime a veteran loses his ability to 'putt on the green' it's time to think about Plan B.

Not sure. It was red flagged by some who cover the team so that's what got my attention.
 
Gay missed from 49 and 53.

That's what he did in Indy in 2024 and that's the real concern.
 
Of all the dumb Rivera moves, this one hit me that he was about rhetoric and image more so than anything else. And some of those who covered him have suggested such about Ron. I recall Craig Hoffman on one podcast said that Ron is more about acting like he's running a high school football team in a movie than coaching the team or something like that.

But for a dude who loved talking about the value of a "Buffalo Nickle" he kept skipping the high pedigree ones in the draft and Hamilton was the kicker. It wasn't like Hamilton was some obscure-surprise hit. That dude was as celebrated of a hybrid safety type coming into the NFL than i can remember.

lol, another example of Ron ignoring Buffalo nickle -- many of us expected JOK in that one. JOK though has had his injuries so not the end of the world. But the dude I wanted and so did many on the draft thread was Darrisaw.
 
Bourne looks like a receiver that has already begun the decline at 29 that most here are envisioning for Terry McLaurin 2-3 years from now.

He hasn't had a 40 catch season since 2021 and that was the only year he really put up starting #2 or #3 wide receiver numbers.
 
Kendrick Bourne doesn't move the needle, even for a #6 receiver...but I guess he's okay depth. is Tyler Boyd really that cooked?

edit: nvm, looks like he's signing with the Steelers.
