I wouldn't sign him for over 30. Probably not even 30. What 30+ year old receiver has been given a contract like that? It's a stretch to say that he is a top 10 WR. He's now the beneficiary of a franchise QB.
He was 15th in yards, 17th in receptions on a team where he was the only receiver who would start on any other team in the league. He was 2nd in TDs though. He's going to be 30. He likely has fewer than 10 TDs this year.
Tee Higgins is 26 and just got 28 a year. I'm thinking that even that much would probably look like too much in 3 years, which would be year 2 of the new contract. The same age as Devonte Adams right now, who got a low 20s deal with similar stats as McLaurin last year where he played for 2 bad teams.
Maybe. Evans with the better career. But now, Evans and Terry IMO are close in ability at this stage. Coaches-Executives ranked Evans ahead of Terry in a survey a week ago as the better current WR. I think they are at a minimum in the same conversation.
I'd like to see Terry deal better with Q. Mitchell. 2 out of three games, Mitchell had his number, heck even making fun of Terry's touchdown dance in the playoffs. Evans smoked Lattimore in the playoffs albiet lol who didn't smoke Lattimore when he played for Washington.
Agree, its all about how this would play out in the future. Evans still really good but experiencing some decline is on point potentially for Terry.
Im not much of a fan of these debates because we dont have the numbers and wont until a contract is signed and without the numbers its pointless.
We can speculate all we want but without knowing there's no way to know who's side you should be on.
I'll say this, its a good problem to have, needing to manage the salary cap very carefully because we are going to be coming up on several contracts of key players who will keep us competitive for years to come.
In years past we were so talent depleted and so terrible on the field that after some mild grumbling occasionally from a player or two we'd just overpay and keep them because the few decent players we had were the only thing selling tickets and snyder knew it.
Now we have a winning roster to try to keep intact (or at least we're well on our way to one) and as frustrating as it can be to alienate players who are the face of your franchise and possibly lose them its a problem all goods teams deal with and we just aren't used to it anymore.

That is a hell of a lot better than the deal the Bills did for Miller. He might even have a bigger effect this year since his injury is further in the past.

Hearing that players are asking their agents to contact Wash is just bizarre, but if JD5 really is the next Mahones/Brady we'd better get use to it

The Tunsil contract is much more important, I think, than the McLaurin one. You can find productive WR's. It's really, really hard to get a franchise LT. Tunsil should be able to be that for the next 3 years at least.
I think McLaurin will be great this year. Probably still very very good next year. But, how confident are we that he will be worth $32 million in his age 32 season?

Agree, we don't know. But I don't think guessing is wild here. Because... Nicki from the WP on Standig's pdcast said she heard Terry's floor for the contract as to what they are looking for is Metcalf's deal. And Rapopport said Terry wants north of 30. Those are decent sources.
I was just listening to Barry Svrluga from the WP who wrote a pay the man article about Terry's contract. He goes since Terry is a reasonable person, his contract demands are probably reasonable, he was guessing 27-28 million. I doubt that. I think if that's what Terry was asking for, the deal would be done.
This isn't of course directed to you but some of the fan sentiment on X. I just don't get the mindset with some of pay Terry whatever he wants. Or those that piggyback off of Terry suggesting that he should be rewarded in addition for what kind of dude he is. Or to assume that Terry is a nice guy so his agent and Terry are super flexible on their demands.
Kirk IMO is a nice guy but he and his agent were hardnosed. From what I've heard Terry and his agent are the same. Keim said in his latest podcast that Terry's side are hardcore set on what they feel his value is. And he suggests that hopefully both sides give some here to work out the deal -- he thinks they will.
I love Terry, he is one of my favs of all time. But the contract stuff puts me off a little, I don't even like hearing from him about how he is an upstanding citizen and that should count for something. In my book, being a good leader-person is what you should do -- if you think you deserve to be compensated for it, it comes off a bit self-serving and defeats the idea some. And don't get me wrong, I do think Terry is genuinely a good dude. But I think his agent is advising him poorly on this.

The difference is we have a real GM who is keeping the entire team in mind and not just one player. If Terry really is asking for north of 31 million, it’s a tough call but I say you play out his contract, franchise tag him for a year, and then let him walk. Love him, but he is way overvaluing himself.

All of those same, “pay the guy” people, would be the same people throwing Peters under the bus, when we are paying a 34 year old receiver $33 million for 700 yards and can’t afford to make the moves that would put us over the top.
Also, I agree with your first two paragraphs.
The reality is that Terry just doesn’t have a lot of leverage. He’s under contract and will be under paid. He can be franchised next year. He’s too old to hold out, miss a season, and ever make that back.
He should take a shorter deal with a ton of guarantees. It’s his logical best path to the most money.
I didn't mean to blast anybody for debating it, its a good thing to banter on i just meant i dont like tryin to pick sides without specifics but thats just me.
And i agree, i love terry like all of us but he's not the team and he's not young and elite like say a jammar chase.
Offer him what hes actually worth based off his production and age and not his status among the fans and if he wants more play hardball just like we're doing.
Realistically we have almost all of the leverage, having the ability to franchise him until he's 32.
Terry has the fact that hes a team legend and this team doesn't want any bad vibes among the fanbase while going through the largest transformation in team history and not much else, hence the reason hes taking the negotiations public.

I like your last point. I really wish he hadn’t taken advantage of a commercial shoot to hold a press conference and then proceed to play victim and throw the team under the bus a bit. If he had just said something like “yeah, my agent and I are working together with the team and hope to have a deal done soon” that would have gone over much better. The pity party and woe is me routine was a bit much.
That's what I heard from multiple radio segments. What could it mean as been mentioned the agent isn't used to playing contracts of this size and or its a more relevant game changer payday for the agent

Keim came up with this gem in his most recent pod- “…you have McLaurin who has a firm belief in his value and I always tell my kids, nobody can…you’re the one who places the value on yourself…so you’ve got to…thats where your value comes from, nobody’s gonna do that for you, you’ve got to do it.”
That may be a solid message to one’s children, but it’s pretty simplistic for the real world where there are a myriad of complications involved.

He's under contract for 19.6 in payments this year.... call it 20M. Keep that in the deal and offer 35M for the following two years. Call it a 2x70M extension, but it's really a 3x90M deal from the team point of view.

Paying terry a little above market now is not an issue with the qb contract. They can pay a little bit more than they wanted to for the next two years. But after that terry needs to lower the pay to help pay for the qb extension
