Jones had a decent season in 2022. 69 tackles 4 picks.....But I just dont understand why we are bottom of the barrel hunting when we have money to spend. I am a little disappointed in this free agency so far

They have already landed 2 impact players with big salaries via trade. They also re-signed key contributors last season with pay increases and still have a number of signing to go to complete the roster.

They no longer have a ton of cap space after these moves so this is how you spend your cap money.

Rework Terry and Tunsil and they could clear 40-50 mill in a day.

I like the J Jones signing. Good man corner. Played in big games. Wouldn't say he has aged himself out of the league at 31. Doubt it's for big money, so low risk move that could have a big impact.

Looks like an off season last year but not too bad. I like PFF but they are't the bible. Regardless, 61 grade isn't bad. And they couldn't dislike him that much considering he made their list of some of their favs FAs. Ertz said for example John Bates is the best blocking TE he's ever seen. Bates run blocking score is below 50, meaning PFf thinks he's one of the worst blockers in the league let alone being one of the best ever.

At a minimum its a dude with some pedigree of having a really good career with elite speed. And apparently a rock star of a dude, leader.

It's hard to see the Los Angeles Rams not come out of the offseason without adding a cornerback.

Ahkello Witherspoon is an impending free agent who the Rams will "definitely" talk to about a return and there are a lot of uncertainties around the rest of the group of Darious Williams, Cobie Durant and Emmanuel Forbes Jr. Los Angeles has a No. 26 pick in the first-round — a ripe location for a rookie cornerback — or could target a few external free agents to shore up the secondary.

One player that Pro Football Focus' Bradley Locker believes would be a "perfect" match for the Rams is New England Patriots cornerback Jonathan Jones....

"While Jones’ 2024 metrics took a hit, he still turned out a 73.5 PFF coverage grade or better in seven games, revealing that there’s still potential for him to play at the lofty level he did in 2023. Inking the former Patriot could give the Rams depth and a quick starter as they pursue additional, younger options in the draft."

Jones has 11 interceptions, 57 defended passes and 436 combined tackles in 132 career games. He would be an experienced veteran presence in an otherwise young secondary if the Rams don't retain Witherspoon and/or draft a rookie in April.




The New England Patriots are expected to meet with veteran corner Jonathan Jones ahead of free agency. This meeting will be to potentially work out a contract extension, according to MassLive.com.

Jones has been open to change this offseason, particularly with Mike Vrabel coming on board as the new Patriots head coach. His return would prove beneficial to the team given his experience in the defensive backfield.

The two-time Super Bowl champion has contributed in the secondary since arriving as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2016. In 2024, the now 31-year-old corner recorded 58 tackles, six pass deflections and two forced fumbles.

Actually they need a leadership-CB in the room or better coaching; they had WAY too many DPIs that were frankly avoidable. I am not yet calling Lattimore out because he was injured but as a group there were some really avoidable DPIs based purely on poor technique; not turning around when it is clear the ball is coming, not even turning the head at all.

From the reading, it sounds like Jones may be helpful with things like that. Sounds to me like a good signing.

Yeah, he was good…in 2022.

So was Michael Davis. Maybe corners can go off a cliff like RBs often do, and just get by on experience and not fucking up assignments.

This is a shift away from targeting physical corners... more in line with the Sainristil mold.

We are a deeply emotionally scarred fanbase. We are in withdrawal because for 30 years we got our dopamine hits in the March-May time frame instead of the September-February one.

To which i would point out a couple different factors.

1. We turned over 60% of the roster last offseason. Of that turnover, we have more than 20 guys hitting free agency this year. This is what happens when you don't have a single 1st round pick on your roster from the last 5 drafts. You're forced to re-tool in FA. In doing so, a massive gap opens up where you have to again fill out your roster with shorter, more economical contracts.
2. Edge costs are going bananas right now. Chase Young just got 3yr / $51M. Josh Sweat got 4 yr/ $80M. Make one of those deals and you've written yourself out of the option of an OT.
3. They just traded for one of the best OT in regards to Pass Pro in the NFL... and we're paying him $21M/yr for 2 seasons. That should have been the priority all along, and we have 2 years of control.
4. They traded for Lattimore. The door is not closed there. He is a premium CB and clearly they still believe he is. I would have loved a move like DJ reed, but trading for a guy like Lattimore (again with 2 more years of control) means you believe that he can be your no. 1 CB.
5. They traded for Deebo. Say what you will about him, but he's still an absolute weapon. He instantly comes in and is the 2nd best weapon on offense, regardless of position.

The money we had wasn't exactly 'in addition' to the 53 man roster. We had a lot of turnover to also address. They've been pretty active and impactful IMHO.
