Yes, but he doesn't cost us 35 million a year and draft picks, and is younger.
Yeah, but the flip side is you get what you pay for.

If you want one of the top 5 DE’s in the league, you pay for it. And this is exactly the type of thing I would pay for while Daniels is on his rookie deal and you can pay for it.

I wouldn’t be mad about Sweat, or a few others.

But if you can get a blue chip player, you should give it a shot.

In 2017, the Redskins had a chance to go sign Calais Campbell, but decided for the price of one, and at the time he was in his prime and a damn good player, they could get two, and they signed Stacey McGee and Terrell McClain.

It was idiotic Bruce Allen logic to spend less for lesser players and hope 2 average to below average players can make up for not signing one blue chip player.

Bruce was dead wrong. Jay tried to defend it and couldn’t even pronounce Calais’ name correctly (this was a drop on Galdi’s radio show for years).

I think the lesson: if you have a chance to get a blue chip player, do it, and pay for it. BUT make sure you’re paying top dollar ONLY for blue chip plagers

You get into trouble where you pay top dollar for average players because you overspend for need.

Right, Sweat would probably cost 20 million a year or so, and he's 2 years younger. Goes back to the question of what we want: some decent pass rush depth that we would be (IMO) overpaying for, or an elite pass rusher we'd have to pay a 2nd round pick and elite market price for?

Our issues with pass rushing last season weren't that we didn't have enough decent depth, it was that we didn't have anyone that scared opposing defenses. Hendrickson gives us that, Sweat doesn't.

Yeah I think this is a component this team has missed forever. Someone on the D line, who strikes fear. Major fear in the opponent. A player who can make other players better and in turn the whole defense. Logan Paulsen talked recently about this -- saying Quinn's scheme is creative in manufacturing pressure but its lacking that elite pass rusher to bring it all home.

The Giants have a monster with Dexter Lawrence. Dallas with Parsons. Eagles with Carter. Who is our guy? When we were playing in the playoffs I dug into what the other team's media were saying about game planning for this team -- Jayden scared them, Terry, that was basically it. No one on defense.

We major in B plus players. Luvu is that kind of player. Kerrigan. Allen at his peak. Sweat at his peak. Going back further A. Carter. On and on and on. We don't do the JJ Watts, Chris Jones, Strahan, Fletcher Cox, Garrett on and on. As weird as the ride has been to find that franchise QB, its been almost as weird finding that disruptive D lineman.

And yeah Hendrickson is that kind of player. So i don't think Quinn-Peters are misguided in their chase of a player like that.

skinsinparadise the only thing I will say is at least we did try at DL to have blue chip players.

Specifically with Allen and Young.

I don’t know if they ever thought Montez was going to be THAT guy. And Payne was a different role.

But with Allen and Young they took a swing a player who could be an A player.

Allen turned out to be a B+\A- type and Young busted spectacularly

No doubt we tried. Heck we were drafted 4 D lineman in the first round, almost in a row. We also tried to get a franchise QB.

My point isn't lack of effort. But that they failed. And I think we might be so used to having our best guys being B plus players that we might have lost sight about what its like to have an A guy.

Instead, of hey Jonathan Allen had no chance because he was double teamed. We have a guy who can actually beat double teams.

Yeah Voice_of_Reason and skinsinparadise pointed to two big reasons why it absolutely makes sense to go after Hendrickson.

To VoR's point: We have an elite QB at the beginning of his rookie contract, and we just got to the NFCCG with him. Assuming we'll sign JD to a gargantuan extension after 2026 (most successful rookie QBs are signed after their 3rd season), that give us a 2 year window. While we have JD on a rookie deal, why not spend some of our money on immediate impact upgrades in an attempt to win a SB soon? By the time we have to pay JD, assuming we front-load the 3-4 year contract for a guy like Hendrickson, those big supporting piece contracts will mostly be gone.

To SIP's point: We absolutely have had a crazy drought on top tier DLs and pass rushers. It really is almost as wild as our long history of failure at the QB position. And I think it definitely has affected us. If you have guys in the trenches who scare opposing OCs, then it makes your back end DBs and LBs that much more effective when it comes to coverage.

If Hendrickson were to cost a 1st+ I'd be more apprehensive about it, but for a 2nd and some change I think it makes sense, as the major hit would be on cap.

the more and more I think about our it, Ron should have traded one of the DL in 2020, take your pick, but f he was going to draft Young.

Not because they were bad but in 2020 they probably could have gotten a good pick for either Allen or Payne.

It was a fleeting thought at the time. But in hindsight it would have been smart roster building.

If the trade for Hendrickson only included a second, I would not oppose it. My understanding is that the bengals are asking for much more.

I don’t want to send the farm to the Bengals for Hendrickson but I darn sure would rather pay a guy who is/been more consistent in his career then Josh Sweat and what we would be paying a guy who has only 1 season of double digit sacks, even in his walk year he only managed 8…. and ppl around the league are viewing him as elite… wow, never have been impressed w/Sweat personally and as someone stated earlier he is the benefit of some elite players on the DL for the Eagles… personally I’d rather have Bosa over Sweat…surely hoping we don’t hear he’s signing come Wednesday

What I’ve heard (and who knows if it’s true) is either a second or a third plus change.

Let’s see.

I’m fine with that. If it’s second plus some loose change I’m fine with that also.

Shrug.

I'm sure they'd like to get more, but they're in a difficult position. They have already indicated that they're planning to extend both Chase and Higgins. That alone is going to be upwards of $60m/year in cap space gone (Chase ~35m/year and Higgins at ~25m/year) and Burrow's salary already takes up a whopping 24.5% of their cap room. That's going to make it tough for them to also float another ~30-35m/year for Hendrickson. If they don't trade him now then he could either refuse to play without a new contract or he'll be a UFA after next season (and a year older) so unless they tag him, they'll get nothing.

It seems like Adam Peters is addressing the team's needs on two levels. He is going after veterans that he can sign on shorter term contracts that aren't going to blow up the cap, while looking for the long-term replacements through the draft. He is using both methods to make sure the team is steadily improving, while understanding that you can't upgrade every single need through only one method.
