The 2025 Free Agency Thread

In a FA class without a tall possession/RZ WR, Engram can be that guy imo. He’s improved over the years after an early bust label and can attack the middle of the field and the sidelines as a big slot. Lawrence does not really excel as an anticipation passer imo while Daniels does, he could really eat here. He can even coexist with Ertz if they want. Still need a blocking TE if Bates gets overpaid (which he will imo, random blocking TE’s frequently get overpaid and then forgotten about)

Saw that some think the Eagles release Goedert so maybe the thought is go cheaper. I doubt it though.
Why would they release Goedert? He's like legitimately good?

I think Jonathan Allen and Payne but more so Allen had a good career here. The problem IMO was they ultimately got paid like they are elite tackles and neither are. Allen in his career had flashes of great but on the aggregate he was good. Payne had less flashes but had one great season.

I admit I have had a grudge against Payne because I wanted Derwin James at that pick not him. Also I pushed back then Vea > Payne and ditto Fitzpatrick who both ended up going before him. Vea and Derwin and Fitzpatrick IMO ended up easily the better players. But, Ill give that Payne was remarkably durable.

In the end he ended up who i thought he was before the draft, good player nothing special. Nothing remotely touching greatness. His one brush of greatness was his contract year -- which aged for me in a very obnoxious way considering how he would do his money signs that year when he had sacks and wasn't shy of telling the world that the season was important to him because of the contract. Once he got the contract he became who he was before that contract year, decent player, nothing special, but now he was grossly overpaid.

I'll say though the combination of the two were dissapointing. they never made much of a combined impact where they took over games the way other big time DTs would take over games against us.

Jonathan Allen was a bit more of the grumpier of the two. And I can see from that standpoint being the less likeable. But hearing what some have said about both behind the scenes -- Allen was a hard worker and tried to lead at times. Payne from what I've heard while isn't lazy also isn't the hardest worker. The good news is technically this could be like another Payne contract year because they can get out of his deal in 2026 so maybe that brings out his best.

lol, the weird thing about both players is I can't think of "star"players more allergic to signing autographs and talking to younger fans. I've been to camp many times, many days over the years. And those two almost never engage with fans at camp. They stood out to me on that front because so many players engage big time. Although I've head once in a blue moon, Allen would but I've never seen it at any time I was there. Guys like Terry for example, can sign autographs for over an hour and never really skip doing it ever. I don't care about it for myself I don't collect autographs but my kids did back in the day.

He's 30 years old, injured a lot, production has dropped 3 straight years.
All good reasons to start contemplating moving on but I think the eagles are just purging some of their older talent to bring in younger hungrier guys in an attempt to avoid the superbowl hangover.

Fair. And I'm not saying we should sign him, but somebody is going to get a good player. I didn't realize he was injured a lot.

Yep he said it on one of the games he broadcasted for this team. Madness indeed.
That is so blatantly false, I mean, that's like looking at a yellow wall and declaring it purple.

Do I have to add Greg Olsen to my list of media people I hate? I don't think just that one transgression takes him to Chris Russell levels, and certainly not Fake News Florio of failure of a human being Collin Cowherd.

I think it pushes him closer to the stupid level of Mark Sanchez though from a color commentator front. Sanchez's commentary is completely idiotic.

Not sure it has been posted but Landry was released by Tenn.

He's ok but even in his prime he was never great.
I personally think he's overrated.

He got banged up last year but most TEs do. More of an F TE than a Y but supposedly he improved as a blocker.

As TE 3 or 4 he's enticing to me depending on his price. If Gesicki can have a big season out of the blue with Burrow -- Engram to me is a slighty better version of him.

His injury history is concerning to me. Multiple concussions and has missed 19 games to injury in his career.

Olsen is really good at his job. But those comments were idiotic -- actually it irriated me more from the perspective of Ron. Olsen was just sucking up to his old boss but if Ron as I suspect tried to sell Olsen on how he set this team for success its pathetic for Ron. I'd bet that Ron tried to sell Olsen and he put him up to it considering like I mentioned Ron more or less said the same thing about himself in an interview, if I recall it was SB week. He talked about it in the context of Quinn and how he was rooting for Quinn because they are friendly and Quinn gave him credit. Quinn is a super nice guy so am sure he did. I doubt lol he would tell Ron hey you sucked.

But yeah its clear that Ron really really really wants to somehow get a pat on his head for this team's success.

Lavar immediately comes to mind.
Yeah I had considered including Lavar and Chase in my post. But Jon Allen was far more productive than those guys. But even in his Pro Bowl seasons he was never the player I envisioned when they drafted him. I know what a 2 time Pro Bowler looks like and he didn't pass the look test. And he had several seasons where he was a flat out liability, again not what I expected on draft day.

He basically played a full season 4 out of the last 5 seasons. TEs tend to miss time. Heck we are talking about Ertz. His durability in the last 5 years doesn't come close to matching Engram. Last year was an outlier for Ertz as to durability.

Rivera didnt use him properly imo. Payne either.

What's the excuse last season? There is a reason this group is quick to move on from Jon Allen.
I suspect it's a damaged goods issue. After so many years of not being coached correctly and not be pushed, I think they developed bad habits that were so engrained that they couldn't get them out of their system.

Allen has been nothing but a leader and class act his entire career with us. Y'all bitching about him makes no sense. Sure, we over valued him, but he's been voted to top 100 by other players, which is the only list that matters, so acting like he sucked is dumb.

It's kind of sad that he asked for a pay cut to stay and they still said no. I'll remember him well.

I remember Allen fondly too. lol, even Payne who is dissapointing IMO I give props for his durabiity.

I think the drill is the Alabama Wall never became that -- both as to stopping the run or rushing the passer.

Payne never really flirted with greatness in college or in the pros aside from his career contract year. Otherwise his career, is sort of in that other Alabama tackle career arc like a J. Reed or Tomlinson. Decent but nothing special. Clear 2nd tier DT who really didn't even sniff the first tier aside from his career season. But he's definitely been at a minimum solid and durable.

Allen was the more consistent tackle. Never really in the range of Dexter Lawernce, Chris Jones -- or name that elite tackle. But for most of his career he was sort of a lower rung first tier tackle. To use baseball terms, not a super star 40 homerun type power hitter. But he was mostly a consistent 28 homerun guy.

I think some of the disappointment with both is this team couldn't find super stars while other teams even loser teams like the Giants would draft some super stars. This team didn't do superstars. No great players aside from Trent. Allen was very good at times but never great. Payne was mostly good, never really very good aside from his career season. Yet, we paid them like they were elite tackles.

My point is the blame is really on the FO not the players. I think Allen in particular gave everything he had. Payne on the other hand is the underachiever of the two -- massive physical ability but doesn't seem to be moviated to greatness aside from when the pay day is right in front of him. But still I'll give Payne that he has been remarkably durable.

It was Rivera overpaying these guys. Heck judging by some of the beat guys thoughts, Kam Curl likely would have been overpaid with something nutty, like 15 million a year, from Rivera if it were not for the sale of the team going on.
