The 2025 Free Agency Thread

It has happened but it’s extremely rare. Reserved for those who intentionally do not play well with others and those too thick to take reasonable advice on style when given.

If we do manage to upgrade both guard spots*, perhaps Allegretti would serve as an upgrade over Deiter for the backup C job?
Personally, I’d like to land a guy in the mid rounds that’s a versatile G/C type.

*not an upgrade from Cosmi, to be clear, just a viable starter while he recovers. Wonder if Paul could be that guy… not that I’d bank on it - I’d want a healthy competition there at minimum.

Generally speaking, I think the minimum I’m looking for is one good upgrade for the oline, a guy or 2 added to the youth/development pipeline, and at least 1 quality guy to add to the IOL competition (ie improving our depth).

We got really lucky with regard to injury on the OL. That has already changed for next season with the loss of their best offensive lineman. As OL was a weakness and given they have already lost Cosmi I wonder just how much they will be able to improve the OL Gotta expect more injuries this coming season.

5th: DT Simeon Barrow Jr.

7th: LB Jay Higgins

Slayton with 4 seasons of 700 plus yards, really good YPR, sub 4.4 speed. Won the Giants Walter Payton award. And did it all with subpar O line and QB play. that's my guy at WR. Can play Z too which is perfect for this team.

Alaric Jackson feels perfect at OT. Young, Big dude. In his prime. Played great against the Eagles in the playoffs. I see the mention of character concerns. Is that purely about the 2 game suspension which he attributed to doing something selfish but never explained what it was? I know he was in Iowa's leadership group in college, judging by his posts he is a religious type. Am not saying I know anything about the personality. But on my initial dive he seemed OK -- but you got me.
About time you showed up! As John McClane once said "welcome to the party pal".

Yeah we did. And I have the same question - how much will they really be able to improve? My conservative bet is that we re-sign Lucas sign a decent G, and then draft a G or C. With Paul, Allegretti and Good-Jones (who they reportedly liked last offseason), at least there’s some healthy competition and hopefully ok depth. If the rookie pans out, great. But I’m not expecting much in terms of starter upgrades.

On the other hand, you have to imagine AP sees the need to get a lot better there, both to improve, but also for Daniels’ sake. So maybe he works some magic… 🤷‍♂️

I've talked about my belief that they are okay Coleman at LT. If I were in AP's shoes, my top target in FA would be a starting LT, Stanley or Jackson. That moves Coleman to LG which seems like his natural position.

To shake up the tackle conversation with a new name, it looks like Braden Smith will be released by the Colts. Goncalves came in as a 3rd round rookie and played at a high level at both LT and RT and they are going to roll with him at RT next year. Cutting Smith saves them $16M.

Smith was signed to a big extension in 2021 with the expectation he'd become an elite RT. That hasn't happened but he is a very good RT who is still 28. Above average pass blocker who is one of the better run blocking tackles in the NFL. He has missed time due to injuries and a personal matter but has still played double digit games all seasons.

Would want to understand what the personal matter is but I think he's my top tackle target in FA if the AAV is in the $10M-$15M range. Signing him allows us to go guard or tackle in the draft and not necessarily force a tackle pick like taking someone like Ersery at #29.

Welcome aboard SIP, you're in a good place.

They may very well upgrade LT and get the best of Coleman’s flexibility, but he was also a rookie. This was not a blue chip elite, top 5 draft pick for a reason.

I can see a path where they think they saw enough from him to continue to develop him in that role.

I’m not going to sit here and say ‘we were in the NFC CHAMPIONSHIP so clearly we’re good enough everywhere.’ I will say that we had a roster of guys that weren’t enough of a liability to prevent it. That changes a lot of the conversation from ‘we need to address this’ to ‘we have room for X improvement at this position. Coleman may be good enough that they prioritize the elite RT for now because the gain of improvement is much larger. They could do it because Jayden has a tendency to break the pocket that direction. It may mean you can flip your O line support to the left side to ‘help’ Coleman which changes the dynamic of the whole line.

It’s a 3 dimensional decision.

I really think they have committed to Coleman at LT, at least for another year.
I do as well, and it makes Braden Smith sound like a very intriguing target for RT. I think we’d all rather see Wiley as a quality back up with position flexibility, or as a potential cut for cap savings if needed.

I haven’t watched Braden Smith, but he looks like a collegiate guard, with 32 inch arms, who has already not been good enough at RT for bother team. Is that a crappy take?

It's the exception vs the norm but some guys figure it out despite shorter arms. I don't think "good enough" is the issue here - it's health, the personal issue he had to take time off for last year, the fact that the Colts found their own cheap gem in Goncalves and the level of pay. If I were to draw an analogy for Smith, he is kind of like Payne. We wouldn't mind Payne if he were making $12M a year but I think many of us are disappointed in him and want to see him cut after next year because he is getting paid like an elite DT and has obviously not performed like one.

Smith's PFF grades:

2021 - #14 ranked tackle per PFF
2022 - Can't find his grade
2023 - 83.3
2024 - 66.2

Entirely possible injuries have taken something from him and that the personal issues he was dealing with last year had an effect but he still played at a good level last year.

Yep Coleman's versatility really helps to give us a lot of flexibility going into FA and the draft to optimize how we build

Even IF Cosmi is medically cleared to play next season, he will be barely functional - ACLs typically take 2 years to fully regain abilities. This will leave weakest link Wiley even more exposed. I think we definitely need to sign 2 solid OL in FA. A top tier LT like Slater, and we move Coleman to either RG or RT.
If Cooper Kupp is just for a 3rd day pick, I think we can spare the cap space now. He is in the Ekeler/Ertz category of savvy vets who JD can immediately fall back on.

Listening to media reports, seems like at least some national reporters believe Kupp will be released. The Rams trying to trade him but considering his salary-age-injury history they might not get a bite in a trade. Hear similar things about deebo.

I should also mention that Conklin will be

Looking like Kirk will be released too. If you could pick one, given all three guys are slot types, do you goo Kupp, Deebo or Kirk?
