Something I have noticed a lot with Hurts is that he rarely takes off running because he is under duress. Quite the opposite, he drops back, sits in the pocket, and if no one is open, the field in front of him is usually wide open so he just takes it because it is there. I swear last night in the superbowl there was one time he took off up the middle where not only was the field wide open but there was an O-lineman just chilling next to him with no one to block....


(Unrelated) Also, I am wondering if the Rams have a chance to be an under the radar contender next season. Some folks are expecting the 49ers to bounce back, but I really think the Rams win that divisional round game if the weather hadn't been such a factor in effecting their passing offense.

I also think you don't want to rush the process.

It's tempting because of how far we got, but we don't want to go absolutely nuts and fill every gap in free agency because the quality probably isn't there. Instead, you probably want to organically grow while taking a few big swings at free agency and a bunch of free agent grabs similar to what Peters did this year. If for no other reason, then we want to have the opportunity for our rookies to get playing time. I love the fact that Quinn and Peters seemed fine with playing guys with lesser contracts based on production, but if you swing big at free agency there is always a pressure to play those guys at the expense of rookies who need PT to grow into their position.

Totally agree and I think something else to keep in mind is that the earlier than expected success might underestimate how many of the players currently on the roster aren't part of the long term plans. Some of them were only on the team this year due to cap implications, others because there was no way to upgrade every single position in a single offseason, but I think AP let it be known in his initial presser that he thought the roster was in very poor shape and that isn't going to change just because JD5 was able to drag them across the finish lines a handful of times as a rookie.
 
I am fine with going slow in FA. We are going to need to sign a couple of OL. But I think we need to be all in on trades. If you have a chance to grab Garrett you do it. Also wouldnt hate Deebo or Kupp for our 5th rounder. Sign Sweat in free agency and that gives you one of the best DL's in the NFC. I would bring back Crowder for cheap. He gives you some juice on special teams and performed well when called upon on offense. Draft a RB and LB early and that would be a pretty complete team. I wonder what their plan is with Wagner and Ertz?
 
I dunno. I think Peter’s was hired because of his draft acumen. So, trading for Myles is a “yes” for me, but I’m not for just going trade crazy. So, I wouldn’t trade for Kupp or Deebo. The only way I’d entertain it is if it were a trade for a pick swap.

I think we can upgrade every single weak spot on the team in FA at decent value
 
I am weary of giving up too much for Deebo. The way the 49ers used him as that RB/WR hyrbid took a lot of mileage off his career. I think he can still be a useful piece of the puzzle but I wouldn't expect to be getting the Deebo Samuel from 3-4 seasons ago.
 
Trying to think with an Adam Peters mind and what he did in his first year as our GM, I could see him giving a 2-3 year extension to Terry McLaurin, try to trade Payne for whatever he can get or best stuck with him until his out in 2026 and trade Allen for a pick or picks. I see him doing 2 or 3 year deals maybe one deal in FA for 4 years but no longer. His forte and he know and loves it is to build through the draft and I'd expect him to end up when trades are made during the draft with something like this 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7, 7, 7.

Interesting little tidbit from our conference game. Did anyone happen to watch Chris Paul vs Jalen Carter? That film could play a bit into our decision making. Yes, he has been raw but maybe he took the next step. I'll tell you this, Carter doesn't like facing him. You can see that when he starts jawing at him.....4 yds down field. Something to watch because we need a bruiser who can maul and he might make himself a factor. Never know.

I was watching Smith last night vs him and unfortunately he did not produce well in this game. But then again, who did for the Chiefs.

I didn’t realize Paul played. I know Scott was supposed to fill in for Cosmi, but I really didn’t pay much attention to the lineup in-game.
 
One advantage Peters has this year that he didn't in 2024 is that now Peters has a year in the system, too. He now sees what his coaches are trying to do and so better understands what they need. It's probably one thing to discuss in theory what you want, but another to see it in practice. They have looked at the game film and graded all their players and discussed what they really needed player X to do and how often he did it. If the answer was "Not often enough" or "Not well enough" then you can go out and get a guy who's not only better, but also a better fit.

I agree. But we dont need Deebo from years ago. We just need a competent number 3. Deebo would not be the only WR piece we are going to be adding And Deebo fits what Kingsbury does on offense very well. YAC guy.

I am for doing whatever it takes to beat Philly and win the Super bowl. If that means trading picks for veterans that can make that happen than so be it. Our window is now. We are not on a rebuilding path. We are on a winning the Super Bowl in the next 4 years path.

I agree to an extent--it needs to be judicious. One of the reasons the Eagles are so dominant is they draft and develop extremely well. I had the unfortunate pleasure of listing to Obnoxious Windbag Lynell Willingham screaming, chastising Commanders fans for not wanting to bet the mortgage on Garrett--saying "there is no price to big for Garrett." That's demonstrably untrue.

As for rebuilding--yes we had a magical season and went to the NFCCG. A lot of that was Daniels being other-worldly. We won several games over sub-par opponents (Saints, Falcons, Bears, Giants) on last-play, walk off wins. We have a ton of holes: CB, WR, OT, OG, DT, DE. We need talent really across the board. There is still a major talent gap between us and the Eagles. We shouldn't try and close that in one year, honestly. We also have the 2nd fewest players under contract next year--so that $82m is going to need to resign some people too. I see Peters doing more this season like he did last: a few moderate, 3-4 year deals, and the rest 1-2 year, VM+I type contracts.

Many of our walk off wins were not miracle plays, but well practiced plays executed well, but some were. Who knows if we get those lucky bounces or karoms in 2025? That means we need to improve. We need to improve in talent and in scheme. I actually expect Daniels to be better than he was in in his rookie year because of how hard he works. I think there were plays missed because he trusted his legs too much at times. I think another year in the system and an improved o line will help him find third and fourth reads a bit better. I also think the team is now confident. And confidence breeds success and effort.

Heck, I think Washington saw the same Super Bowl that we did and thought the same things we did. They competed better and harder against the Eagles. They weren't a fluke riding a hot rookie. Maybe for that reason, one of the biggest challenges is to make sure the team doesn't get fat and happy. They need to be confident, but hungry and not believe the hype that's coming their way.

And yeah, we do need some better players, but I'd argue that equally important to getting better starters what we really need is better depth. Teams rotate a lot these days. Players get hurt. We can't rely on a marquis signing to solve our problems. If we can add a few then we need to, but the problem of the Cerrato teams was behind the starters we only had trash so if one guy fell we were screwed. So, I really don't want to see us go trade happy or A=list free agent happy and spend to the limit of our cap. I think it's too easy to build a team that's a mirage that way.
 
Can anybody here speak to how much they invested in the line in San Francisco? They gave up a 3rd for Trent, but I can't remember them spending much high draft capital or signing any big FA. Maybe that is because Shanahan thinks he doesn't need them, but they seemed to focus on adding and drafting weapons. They traded a 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th(the following year) for McCaffrey. Spent a 1st on Aiyuk and I think a 2nd on Deebo? Got lucky with their Kittle in the 5th I think.

Now, I know Peters views his job as finding what will work for the coach. If Quinn wants to invest more heavily in OL, then that is probably what we will do, to some degree.

But, it wouldn't surprise me if we spent our more premium draft picks and FA money on the DL and on weapons. DL and weapons seemed to be the 49'ers approach.
