The 2025 Free Agency Thread

I'm not sure that is a fair appraisal of the situation. Stanley had a catastrophic ankle in jury in 2020. A full 25 of those games he missed were in 2020 and 2021. I think he just took a really long time working back from that. Stanley played 11 games in '22, 13 games in '23, an 17 games this year. I'd say playing 30 games in a 2 year span is pretty remarkably healthy for an OT. And he's going to be 31 to start the '25 season. High end OT's can often play well until age 34 or 35. Trent is 36 this year.

That is my fantasy haul. Ronnie Stanley, Tee Higgins, Charvarius Ward, Khalil Mack, and a Terry extension. We can fit that all in and still have plenty of room for depth moves if we let Allen go. And I think that would give us enough high end talent at WR, QB, and all 3 levels of the defense, that we could add TE, OL and RB in the draft and have a really, really talented and deep roster. A top 3 NFC roster, to go with the Eagles and the Lions, but with a better QB than those teams.
This was a good rebutal so I looked into it. As I recalled it was not only the ankle but a knee. According to this article he was pretty injured in 2023 and in his words didn't play up to his potential. I would not hate the signing but he is still an old player with a big injury history.

I think both the Sinnott and McCaffery picks look like slight reaches at the present. That could change depending on what happens going forward, but right now I think you'd have to give the 2024 draft mixed grades. JD and Sainristil being the only home runs.

There has been little said about Sinnott from coaching. I am hoping they address him to the media as far as future plans. They drafted him high for a reason and we all had much higher expectations. Yes Ertz was great but perhaps Sinnott learned from him this year and takes that role over offering more YAC opportunity at TE

They were in the mix earlier in the season and then fell off the map which is why I share your concern. I will never believe McCaffery will be a long term answer as a returner. He picks his spots well and gets what he can but he is not nearly as explosive as we need. Even though he wasn't given many targets Sinnott was also seeing the field earlier in the season.

We always assume most picks will hit, especially when you have a GM with his reputation. And I thought Sinnott was the safest pick in their draft as far as bust potential. I don't see either busting, they will pay in the league. But we can't assume they will be impact players anymore IMO.

I would grade Coleman as an equally good pick as Sainristill. Both had ups and downs which would be expected from rookies playing demanding positons. Sainristill was not good against the Eagles either so I can't call either home run picks. I would call them very good picks with promise.

I understand your point on Sainristil, but you also have to factor in he has been forced into the role of outside corner vs. nickel which is his natural position. I think the jury is out on Coleman and it's probably unfair to write him off as our future LT. But it always felt like him becoming a serviceable LT was probably the absolute best case scenario/ceiling for him. I think it's possible they move him to guard and take another swing at finding a dominating LT. And of course, I could be way off on that. I'm not ready to put him at Sainristil's level yet. For fans, I think it's always harder to judge linemen than it is DBs who are out there on an island.

I guess I'm higher on Coleman because I wasn't expecting him to be this good and I was pretty confident that Sainristill would be good. Their PFFs are pretty similar for what that's worth. I saw Colemen do a really good job on some of the best pass rushers in the league and that got me excited. Then he struggled as well and I have to remember he is a rookie LT, and played better than so many rookie LTs drafted ahead of him.

I really hope they sign Ward or a comparable corner and put Mike where he belongs, in the slot where he could be great.

I think something else that has to be examined is how many draft picks from AP under Lynch stood out as sensational as rookies versus developed over a couple seasons before they became household names. A big part of the draft is taking those 2nd/3rd/4th/5th rounders and developing them. Once in awhile you will hit on that overlooked superstar in the making player in the middle rounds but a lot of those players, even if they have a high celing with the right organization/coaches/players around them, aren't going to look hit their ceiling right out of the gate, especially on a roster that still needs a lot of work overall. It might take another season or two to properly grade the 2024 draft.

Good post. I think most of us wait 3 seasons before making an evaluation on most rookies. But if they are great, like a Nabors or obviously suck such as Forbes, it's clear early. But for the vast majority of rookies you are spot on. But it's still fun to discuss as this is the only information we have at this time.

Terry McLaurin is a great example. He was originally drafted with him having a special teams returner/slot WR role in mind, but he immediately showed he had a lot more ability to offer and never looked back. It was apparent pretty quickly. I think with skill position players there is a higher likelihood that they flash immediately versus say a lineman or linebacker where most of the snaps they take rely on others around them to also be doing their job (ala working as a unit) to get maximum success.

I will never understand why it takes TEs a year in nearly every instance. I mean I get they have duel role as blockers and receivers, most of them anyway. And I can obviously see what a Kelce brings. But with so many games they show an iso of the tight end after he makes a big catch and he literally runs 7 yards and turns to a spot so many times. How hard is that for a rookie to learn? Obviously it is, just an observation.

My only guess is that with the TE position, there are less reps available for each TE to be pass-catchers for, unlike WR where on most plays they are running routes even if just too deceive a defense. When there are multiple TE's on the field during a play it's likely they are there to block either for an RB or to help with the pass-blocking, so if Ertz established himself early on as a reliable security blanket for JD5 it is going to severely reduce opportunities for other TE's to be pass catchers in the offense. It is kind of funny how they did trust Sinnott to be a part of one of the most riskiest plays of the entire season in the NFCC so that at least shows the coaches do have some level of confidence in him as far as development goes.

I have also heard that AP envisioned Sinnott more like a Kyle Juszczyk than a George Kittle but because of the lack of talent in the rest of the backfield this season, it limited what the bigger plans for him were, for now.

Players currently on our roster can be resigned/extended at any point.

Thanks, that makes sense to me in terms of what people are saying. I just could not find any authority for it. That really helps this team.

^^^ Now that's an aggressive off-season! Wow

Yeah, I like some of it, but disagree too which is how it should be. Honestly, I can't see them not re-signing Ertz. I do want to groom a replacement whether that's Sinnott or someone in the draft, but Ertz earned another contract and Daniels loves him. Likewise, I want Chinn back. He played his tail off.

I think part of keeping the brotherhood/chemistry is rewarding those/acknowledging those who gave their all. Sometimes, you can't because you get outbid or age/injury other factors come into play, but keeping someone who excelled in your system is sometimes worth more than getting a slightly more talented free agent who you project to play well in your system.
