The 2025 Draft Thread

It seems there is some disagreement about this, and I respect Paulson’s opinion, especially about TEs, but I would be very surprised if we cut Sinnott this year. I understand he was somewhat disappointing last year, but he was drafted high enough and has not been so bad that I wouldn’t expect to give him at least two years to develop.

Same goes for McCaffery actually. It’s weird to me the high expectations so many people have for rookies. Sometimes it takes a little time for young guys to figure it out. I say give them a chance.

Paulsen didn't say he would be cut. He simply said it wouldn't surprise him if one of those guys surpassed Sinnott on the depth chart. So I presume he was thinking 4 TEs make the roster.

I think foir both players the red flag that some took away was its concerning that as the season progressed they were trusted less not more. They got less playing time, not more. Especially McCaffrey had a chance to elevate with the WR injuries but that didn't happen.

Agree, as to give it time. What seems to work against both is the days of dudes being slow starters in their pro careers seems to happen less at some spots compared to the old days, especially at WR.

Terry as a third rounder shined right away. As have plenty of other rookie WRs. TEs tend to take longer. But some do show at least flashes in season 1. The TEs taken after Sinnott. Tip Reiman, blocking TE, got a good amount of snaps as a blocker. Ja'tavion Sanders, didn't kill it, but had 30 plus catches, 300 plus yards, he made some impact. Theo Johnson about the same as Sanders. Cade Stover didn't do much but still had much more production than Sinnott. So even within context Sinnott is off to a slow start.

And agree with Paulsen (who makes the point politely) that its not a good sign that Sinnott's reps went down not up as the season went on. In another earlier segment during the season, I recall Paulsen was asked about Sinnott's lack of playing time and I recall him saying something about from what he can tell he's not where he's supposed to be on certain plays judging by watching the other TEs as to the playbook.

As for McCaffrey. I'd give him that he at least showcased as a kick returner as the season went on.

I got to go back and watch these guys to come up with my own takes though.

Why should we give McCloughan credit? He was here two years, he completely mailed in half of that.

Even his one year that he actually tried he had a lot of baffling picks. He hyped Matt Jones out like crazy calling him Marshawn Lynch...and then it came out Jones had zero vision, usually had poor leverage on contact, and the comparison to Lynch was even more baffling.

He drafted a Guard with the 5th overall pick. That was about as safe and non-bust worthy move possible. However he actually thought he was a Tackle, only for the coaches to realize within 2 days that his short arms made that too difficult.

Preston Smith was a quality pick. Jamison Crowder a great one. Jarrett was good. Scherff was ok, normally it would be poor value for slot but talent kind of fell off after the next pick Leonard Williams, and methodology for Scherff was wrong.

Add up a good but inconsistent 2015, with the truly awful 2016 and he was a bad GM. Don't forget he was so determined he was right about Matt Jones he built the ground game around him and UDFA's in 2016.

People try and give him more credit for things outside of his control. Sean McVay, Kirk Cousins, and Jordan Reed blossoming. Guys that were all there before he showed up.

Sinnott was a green rookie last season. Not all rookies burst out of the gate like Jayden Daniels.

Some take a year or two to find their NFL legs.

I think one of the reasons for Sinnott's diminished returns was because by the second half of the season, Washington was becoming a serious playoff contender and were still in the hunt for the division crown.

I think they decided to go with the veteran, experienced hand in Ertz, who developed a very nice chemistry and connection with Daniels.

With Washington most likely being contenders again this upcoming season, as long as Ertz stays healthy and plays well, his veteran experience and chemistry with Jayden will probably keep him on the field.

Sinnott, unless he suddenly becomes Travis Kelce, will just have to keep working and looking for opportunities.

I know we like to lump Sinnott and McCaffery together but for me, Sinnott was invisible in a far more surprising way than McCaffery was considering his pre-draft profile. McCaffery made some contributions albeit they were small, but I think that was to be expected given he was absolutely a 'project pick' selected on the basis of his athleticism and pedigree given his inexperience even at the college level at WR. A couple small positives - he had a 75% catch rate on the 24 balls that came his way. He had some decent YAC on those receptions. He also contributed on ST (I would ask why he didn't get more opportunities on ST?) as a kick returner, averaging 30 yds/return and almost busted one all the way.

If you'd have told any of us after last year's draft that our Rd 2 selection would only have 5 balls thrown his way all season, we wouldn't have believed you. Sure, he caught all 5 passes and 1 of them was for a TD, but that's as close to being invisible as you can get - on a fairly weak team when it comes to dominating pass catchers. I think that's pretty concerning for a guy you used your 2nd pick in the draft on. He could turn out to be great - but if we are all being honest, we are giving Adam Peters the kid gloves treatment so far, and that's understandable given the shocking success of the team overall. I think you could make a pretty strong case that (other than Jayden Daniels - and yeah, that's a huge caveat) that Peters has been pretty 'meh' in the draft so far and has done much better in free agency. But it's early.

100% true. And in addition, I think we have to admit to ourselves that the Sinnott pick is being graded on a curve because of the number of day 2 picks we made last year. It’s easy to say “well sure but Newton flashed and is allegedly a round 1 talent, and Sainristill is a young stud”.

If we’re being honest with ourselves, we’d be a lot more cautious around discussing AP’s drafting acumen if Sinnott was our only 2nd round pick last year

If we judge him by real terms in a draft which is if you pull 3 starters out of a draft, you got a good one. That first draft was a good one. Scherff had a good career. Preston Smith considering the career he has had and this teams history with 2nd round picks should have a statue outside the stadium. Crowder has had a good career. That's three. Now the rest is just bonus. Matt Jones was sort of the same idea of Brian Robinson. He played two years here with just under 500 yards both seasons, one of the years with a 4.6 YPC, Robinson's peak is 4.3. The team gave up on him as they should versus this team which keeps riding Robinson. But overall, it doesn't matter what Jones did since we already got the three hits. And for a late third round pick considering the odds of success, you can more easily argue he is closer to a hit than a miss but it doesn't matter either way. Then you got Reiter who had a decent career. K. Garrett had a good rookie year but got a career ending injury. Heck if all of our drafts were like 2015 this team would have been much better.

I don't hit people for hits in the draft regardless of context. There is no such thing IMO as this dude couldn't miss so if he hits it doesn't matter because of the position he plays or whatever. Yeah you can screw up a top 10 pick for an O lineman ask the Giants among others. And its not like every tackle who is converted to a guard becomes a pro-bowler guard -- let alone he was the only non-punter All Pro during the Dan era. There is zero there to attack Scot on IMO. He's been one of the top guards in the league for eons. Killer career for Scherff.

Stack other drafts against it. And we of course shouldn't do it in the way that some do when the drafts are over when we think of every present as a Christmas present and they will all work out. The way to do it is 3 years later. The odds of your picks working out isn't hot starts from the 3rd round.

So yeah 2015 draft was a good one. And its not debatable IMO. It's slam dunk a good draft. For the stragglers who hit him over the 2015 draft, to me is just emotion based. I get the drinking and the soap opera and the disappointment that he came in with a Peters like rep and didn't deliver like that. But IMO not giving him credit for 2015 is wild. Not saying that's what you are doing but have seen others play down that draft. Now 2016 is a different story.

He also did a nice job with some of the in season cheap FA pick ups that year to in 2015.

Now 2016, I think he was feeling himself as I mentioned and it backfired. He seemed so focused on Ryan Kelly in the first round. I get it what are the odds a center would be taken before their pick. But when it happened, it seemed clear he pivoted to Doctson without exploring the dudes personality in advance. That seemed to be a theme in round 2, I forgot whom but it came out later there was a dude he was targeting in the 2nd who also was taken and he pivoted to Cravens. Also, clearly never delving into the personality.

Taking Fuller, Ionnadis in the next two rounds were good. Ditto Sudfeld as a backup QB. And he also did one thing I can't recall this team doing in recent years or even years back, trade down and bring picks for the next season. He got three picks for 2017 maneuvering down in the draft. On the aggregate a bad draft, but we had worse.

Parcells used to say if you are batting anywhere near 500 with all your decisions in personnel you are one of the best at that game.

Peters is going to screw up of course in FA and get plenty of picks wrong.

Right now, if I am judging on potential misses.

A. I liked the process of going after Lattimore. They had a shot at the big dance and their CBs were wretched. But he looked awful. They gave up a lot for him. And even if he recoups his form, he's been an injury waiting to happen. And I am not so sure he fits the whole brotherhood locker room vibe they are building. So it might be a big swing and miss considering his salary and trade capital. IMO this might be Peters biggest hit and miss so far but will see.

B. Kinlaw. Now on this one I got no clue. But the move is made fun of around the league as maybe the worst in FA. The trashing of that move came out in leaks from other teams. Anayltic types. National media, etc. A WP reporter said upon their probing they didn't hear of another team upping the bidding for Kinlaw so they might have bid against themselves. I got no clue. But will see how it plays out. But releasing Allen who got gobbled up by a good FO and a good defensive mind and for good money and signing Kinlaw -- that will be one to watch.

C. I am good with their draft. But if you told me before the off season, they'd basically sign cheap FAs at edge with meh to bad PFF scores. And not draft a DE or RB (not until round 7) in one of the most stacked drafts in memory for both positions, I'd say you are crazy. Now, I get the method to the madness but for a team is pursuit of a championship if the season ends up being disappointing for these reasons, its somewhat on Peters.

D. As to the draft, they went with Conerly over Simmons at LT. Some say Simmons is the better tackle. They skipped Ezeriakau who went to a division rival. They went with Lane over Royal. And they went with a raw LB over guys like Martinez at RB who were still there. Heck the Giants took one of my fav RBs and upgraded that spot when they were already stronger than our RB crew. Again, I endorse what he did. I love building the O line. And considering how Lattimore failing could derail the season, I get the Amos pick. And Lane was one of my favs predraft as what Croskey-Merritt. But there are definitely some moves there that will be interesting to see how they play out.

E. In the last draft, Sinnott didn't flash the way some of the TEs who were taken after him. McCaffrey the typical mock drafter had graded as a third day pick, as did I on ES, often late third round pick, we grabbed him in the 3rd round. We passed over a CB to a division rival in a trade who helped them win a SB. Even Newton was decent but nothing special in year 1.

And look some of this clearly won't go well for him. But I'll give him a break because EVERY GM has some bad misses. And everyone has they should have taken this guy instead of that guy drill in every draft. If every GM nailed the best player at each spot they were picking -- it would be the first time that ever happened. It's an impossible task. That's why for me look if the Eagles CB ends up better than ours -- I am still good with it as long as ours works out. IMO is all about having as many hits as possible, not perfection.

I think Peters is off to a good start. But over time, I do think some (not you) will be disappointed with him for the reason that some get really bothered by misses and whata shoulda type of things. The odds are 100% that he will have some big swing and misses and 100% that in almost every round he won't take the best player who ended up around their pick. For me its do I like the process. And from what I can tell I like his process. I am already braced for some misses. But yeah he's going to have curious moves on his resume here, they all do.

I do think he's on notice from this off season especially on the D line. Many in the national media think he's put lipstick on a pig (maybe not as dramatic as that but many question whether he did enough) at the D line spot. I think especially seeing how Kinlaw and Lattimore work out will either burnish or diminish his star some.

The OL and CB rooms are significantly upgraded from 2024, those were to me clear weak spots on this team in recent seasons.

On the DL the killer weakness was not rushing the passer but stopping the run.

The players we acquired from Wise to Goldman to Kinlaw Peters believes are players that solidify the rush defense so Barkley is not a candidate to get to 175-200 yards on us in 2025.

We also improved at WR where last year we had waiver wire pickups being asked to get on the field before they learned the playbook.

I have my doubts about McCaffrey but think the additions of Samuel and Lane will expand what we can do on that side of the ball.

Still interested in seeing what Magee and Medrano bring to the LB corps.

Medrano looks more like a SS to me. A "buffalo" if you will. We'll see.

So far it's still wait and see as for Peters. It takes a long time for a GM to catch his groove and Daniels will ease a lot of those pains.

OL, WR, CB, DL are all upgraded IMO, nothing has gotten worse, so we should at the worst, be as good as last year and we were a game away from the SB.

He absolutely sucked. Bad drafts, FO drama and borderline criminal behavior.

We had good QBs and a freaking insanely talented coaching staff. How many of the coaches on that team are now HCs or close to it? A lot.

Yeah I find it hard to give most staff or front office any kudos over the past two decades even though I understand they were in an uphill battle with Danny. Th

Draft wise we had a number of drafts where we had a lot of "roster hits" in that first year or two after the drafts. Most of those eventually never made or roster or made any waves in he NFL. THe only reason the drafts appeared decent at first was due to our roster being so subpar.

Like most bad rides, it wasn't bad every year. But if they are majority bad, clearly you got no shot.

I just went through all of their drafts since 2013, here is IMHO take on them

2013: I'd grade it a C minus
Mostly misses but Jordan Reed was special. And Chris Thompson had some good years. It's really rare for this team to draft special players. We major in good not great. But alas Jordan would always get banged up. But he helped us win that 2015 division which was fun at the time.

2014: I'd give it a D.
Basically it was Morgan Moses. And some dudes that were OK for a few years Trent Murphy, Breeland. That trade down with Dallas was brutal. Trent Murphy for us D. Lawrence for them.

2015. I'd give it an A minus.
3 good starters who had long careers. A couple of role players for a few years. They dumbly tried to move Reiter to the practice squad years later. I remember Cooley at the time saying Reiter is good and he would be claimed, he was right. Tragic about Jarrett who looked like a good one until that injury which happened at a game i was at. Painful to hear Scot saying he wanted to take Diggs but Dan said no but lol not sure how I feel about that after this weekend.

2016. D plus.
The first two picks were brutal. But Fuller in the third was nice. Long career. Ionnaidis in the 5th was nice. Good career but oddly faded once Ron arrived. Sudfeld, backup QB, not bad for a late round QB. To me the thing that I take away from this one that I'd love to see from this FO in the future is trade picks for future picks. That's very Eagles style. He got 3 2017 picks by trading down. I am gathering from fan comments every time I mention it is yawn, who gives a crap. And I get the FOs get not love for accumulating future picks. But I love it. Maybe if it was someone other than Scot doing it - it would be better received. If it was Peters (who Iove) it would be celebrated as to let Adam cook.

2017. B.
Jonathan Allen was a good pick. Roullier had a good career until his injury. Ryan Anderson was an awful pick -- short armed, bad athlete and they were betting on him being a tough mean SOB overcoming his physical limitations. That was a very Ron type pick from Bruce Allen -- that is drafting a narrative above the player. Perine has had a decent career albiet not here.

2018. D.
Payne to me was a painful pick for me at the time. It's actually more painful for me now every time I hear a beat guy talk about we need to motivate Payne by reminding him that its sort of a contract year for him. His career arc has aged the way I thought it would. Good player, never special. And arguably he's not even good anymore. Some of the other guys we talked about back then, Vea, Fitzpatrick, D. James ended up much IMO better players than Payne albiet the only one available when we picked was James. But Payne has been more durable than the other guys so on that point alone it aged as a solid pick for me IMO but not great. Outside of Payne though, not much. Tim Settle was decent for some time.

2019. A minus.
I don't grade a draft on a curve where I slam the FO more for this pick or that one. To me its about the whole draft. So I forgive (RIP) the dumb Haskins pick. And they got Sweat, Terry, Holcomb in that draft. 3 starters. And Terry is special.

2020. D
Chase young aged as a bad pick. Curl has been a decent safety. Gibson an OK back. I'd give it higher props if one of those guys sniffed being very good. But alas, that's not been the case. I suspect Ron would have given Curl a ridiculous contract if Ron remained one more year so we dodged a bullet on that one.

2021. C minus.
Cosmi is a good one. Bates is a good blocking TE. Some others are ok role players Forrest and Dyami. This one looked better a year or so ago where it looked like Forrest was emerging. I am not sold on Dyami. But this for Ron was his best draft IMO.

2022. F plus.
Really bad draft. I'd give it an F if it wasn't for Howell who while wasn't the solution is a good QB pick for a 5th rounder. Robinson is OK. But an underwhelming useless draft.

2023. F.
Quan Martin is a decent safety. But that's it.

2024. A.

Almost for sure we will get the three starters from this one. Some would say that Peters though had really high picks plus the benefit of extra picks. All true. But, getting the QB right is everything.

If I had to rank the GMs here

1. Shanny. He was below average on the aggregate but I always give extra props for finding a QB. RG3 flamed out but Kirk in the 4th was a great pick. Going for Trent over Okung was big. Back then there was an actual debate. I recall Gil Brandt whining about the Trent pick at the time saying Washington squandered their shot to take the next Chris Samuels when they bypassed Okung. Ryan Kerrigan was a nice one albiet trading down and by passing on Watt was painful. Jordan Reed. Alfred Morris. Chris Thompson.

As for a culture guy, I'd say below average. The RG3 leaks to the media was nasty. And by reputation he was arrogant along with being bad at picking players who played defense in Denver -- all of that followed him here.

He's aged a little bit better for me. He seems gracious in his retirement and can admit mistakes. Clearly, he had a killer coaching staff with his branches all over the NFL. And his feistiness against Dan, I can appreciate that more now -- ditto that Bruce and Dan hated him.

2. Scot McCloughan. Good draft. Bad draft. Overall, average. I am a process guy more than anything when it comes to the draft. And on that front he was aces to me from the context of stressing the importance of the draft and adding picks. Unless I am forgetting one, he's the only one I can recall who traded down in a draft to pick up picks for the following year in the last couple of decades here. I love that. That's Eagles style.

Two years is way to quick to judge any GM IMO. Every GM has bad drafts even Roseman, even Schneider, etc. Peters will have a bad draft. It's inevitable. So 2016 isn't a death knell for me. That seems silly. But I get it as to dumping him because of the personal stuff. The drinking was a problem.

He's also aged a bit better for me. As some here know, I met Scot once as part of a charity and found him a super nice guy. But more importantly, the people who covered him said also he is a super nice person. The soap opera stories around him were leaked by Bruce-Dan. Remember back then they were masters at the mean spirit leaks and scapegoating. They could have just fired him without all the narrative. Also, he can't be that bad at his job considering he's consulted for multiple teams nonstop since he left, and piecing together something he said to Sheehan, am gathering the KC Chiefs are one of those teams.

3. Vinny Cerrato. Hated the process behind the moves during his era. That is, trading for veterans, screw the draft picks. He and his close pal Dan treated the team like child with a toy. In Vinny's defense, over the years I've heard that Vinny has better instincts than Dan on some moves but Dan overruled him. The only thing I appreciated from that era is I like aggressiveness. The problem with their version of it was it was guided by stupidity.

He hasn't aged better or worse to me. He's from what I hear a nice guy. But he's too much of a Dan apologist from the perspective that he likes to sell their failure was QB and very little else. So some of his interviews over the years come off nauseating to me.

4. Bruce Allen. He'd be dead last for me and by a mile if I judged it by everything. But i am keeping this mainly to personnel-draft choices. I think he's the dude that crashed this team more than anyone aside from Dan. Cerrato would come off bufoonish and incompetent. Bruce to me came off smug and incompetent which I found even more off putting. The organization under him won less than the Cerrato era. He ushered in that era of the team being cheap which led to decay everywhere. Cheap with their scouting staff. Cheap with facilities. Cheap with the stadium. Arrogant and stupid in their contract negotations, trades, stadium chase, press conferences, on and on. This was the era where fans checked out. As a personnel guy he was bad, too.

He hasn't aged better or worse to me. His legacy of incompetence is obvious on just about every front (off the field on the field) and nothing shakes me from that thought. On that front, he's aged a bit worse to me. But it evens out some in that I enjoy that Bruce and Dan ended enemies. Because as much as i didn't care for Bruce back then, I disliked Dan a lot more. So as to that feud, i am on team Bruce.

5. Ron Rivera. Came off much nicer than Bruce so that was a nice change. But it almost felt like he was milking the idea that he was a nice guy to a fault. In retrospect, Ron's whole era seemed to be colored by him being a nice-solid dude as to his persona. Ron's "culture" seemed driven by he's a nice guy and drafts mostly nice people, too. But his record in the draft and most of FA was atrocious. And he seemed to have little ambition to be anything better than mediocre. And I get the vibe digesting various narratives that he didn't work that hard even though he was wearing multiple hats where you'd figure if anything he'd be putting in a ton of time. I recall Hoffman saying he asked Ron during Ron's last off season here what does he actually do. And Ron didn't have much of an answer to it.

He's aging worse for me. Jay for example is humble and explains well what he did and didn't do while here. Ron on the other hand at different times tries to sell how great a job he did building this roster to set up Quinn. He was the only dude that I can recall who had Dan's back right to the bitter end and beyond. Said how good Dan was to him. And then later leaked a story to his guy Mike Silver that it was so hard to succeed under Dan. He even denied that he wanted full control which is wild considering when he took the job all he could talk about is how much he loved the "coach centric" model. Ron comes off to me a bit dishonest and delusional about his tenure without an ounce of humility.

You make a good point. People forget that Howie Roseman was not always the Roseman of today. In fact there was a time where he was pushed out of his own organization by Chip Kelly because the owner wanted to try a new direction.

Peters can bomb the next few drafts as far as am concerned and he will still be deemed a big winner to me. He did one thing that Casserly, Cerrato, Gibbs, Jay, Shanny, Scot, Bruce, Ron couldn't do and that is find an elite young QB. Shanny came close.

That changes everything. Todd McShay said it the mostly bluntly during the last draft season which is if you don't have the QB, your drafts don't matter. And then in another segment he talked about Washington is now finally at the big boys table.

Peters shifted eveything about this organization with that pick.

And I found it ironic that someone from PFF, forgetting whom, said Peters deserves no credit for Daniels considering that was a no-brainer pick. I find it ironic from PFF considering they thought Maye was slam dunk better than Daniels, ditto Caleb, and while they liked Daniels they definitely didn't act like it was a fool proof pick at that time, in fact it wasn't who they would have picked at all.

I was among the Maye > Daniels people but i thought it was super close. And on ES (not to pick on anyone, we've all been wrong about QBs including myself but bringing this up to make a point) I recall as we got closer to that pick there was plenty of trepdiation from some about picking Daniels. I rewatched him (every rep) and really became more smitten by him after that exercise and talked about it. Some others rewatched him and said the more they watched the more they didn't get it about Daniels. And for me I thought Daniels would be good but I didn't envision him being THIS good.

My point is i don't think it was super obvious to all that Daniels was the right pick. And not only did Peters think he was better than Maye. He also thought he was better than Caleb. Thus far he looks on the money.

Daniels, assuming he stays heathy, changed the trajectory of this franchise. And for the first time since the 1990s we are a real SB threat.

He absolutely sucked. Bad drafts, FO drama and borderline criminal behavior.

We had good QBs and a freaking insanely talented coaching staff. How many of the coaches on that team are now HCs or close to it? A lot.

What was the borderline criminal behavior?

i like Peters and everything he has done for the franchise so far but not sure i can give him an A for the 24 draft.
Beyond JD, the only hit in that draft so far is Sainristil. I would give Peters a C+ for his draft so far.

I explain why I gave him an A in my previous post. As far as I am concerned getting an elite QB is worth three drafts of players even more. So am not judging him like the meaningless Ron, Jay, Scot, Bruce, Vinny, Shanny drafts where the defacto quest was how can we build the next 9-7, or 10-6 team. Peters has already made the point with a 12 win season. Lets say he missed on Jayden and the every other pick was perfect -- those successful picks wouldn't matter. Without an elite QB, you got almost no chance at a SB.

He won the lottery. I don't care about the other lotto tickets that failed in the process of winning the lottery.

But playing along with your point, I am not judging guys after season 1 and grading them. To me its all incomplete. Except for Jayden was showed elite ability immediately.

C plus? What draft do you think we've had in the last three decades that had more impact than this last one?

I agree with most everything you wrote over your last three posts. I do have a hard time assigning an A minus to the 2019 draft because at the end of the day, we took a giant swing and miss with the 15th selection. It was a total throw away almost like Danny had Rivera whispering in his ear fan-boying Haskins.

On Rivera the HC/GM I am thinking you like some in the media, bought into the nice guy stuff for a longer period than some of us. Its been frustrating to to hear so much nicety talk about Rivera who at the end of the day, SUCKED for this team. And again that is even with me adding in the dealing with Danny caveat.

Such a shame that this team had such an incredible all star type young offensive coaching staff but never gave any of them a chance to shine in Washington. Instead the litter the league as OC's and HC's, many experiencing good success already in their still young careers.

You make a good point. People forget that Howie Roseman was not always the Roseman of today. In fact there was a time where he was pushed out of his own organization by Chip Kelly because the owner wanted to try a new direction.

I have to give Lurrie credit for patience. Roseman has been hot in recent years. Red hot. It's helped Roseman to have all the learning pains over the years including some bad drafts that every GM experiences. I've watched several Roseman interviews this off season and he comes off somewhat humble about what he's learned and how he's evolved.

Next week, Howie Roseman will oversee his 14th draft as Eagles general manager, and the first 13 have ranged from brilliant to disastrous.

11) 2019: Miles Sanders salvages this draft. He wasn’t a superstar, but he had four productive years here and even made a Pro Bowl in 2022. But the rest of this draft was a disaster. Dillard started just nine games as an Eagle, J.J. Arcega-Whiteside caught just 16 passes as a 2nd-round pick, Shareef Miller played two career snaps and Clayton Thorson played none. Yikes.

1st round: Andre Dillard
2nd round: Miles Sanders, J.J. Arcega-Whiteside
4th round: Shareef Miller
5th round: Clayton Thorson

12) 2017: What lifts this draft over 2014 and out of the dreaded bottom spot? Barnett at least had 6 ½ functional seasons in an Eagles uniform, and he did Tom Brady fumble in the Super Bowl. If Barnett and Jordan Matthews are a push, Rasul Douglas nudges 2017 ahead of 2014. He didn’t really figure it all out until 2021 with the Packers, but he did have five interceptions in three seasons in Philly, started 18 games and earned a ring in 2017. Sidney Jones really drops this draft down though. It was a risky pick that didn’t pan out. Mack Hollins and Donnel Pumphrey in the fourth round doesn't help either.

1st round: Derek Barnett
2nd round: Sidney Jones
3rd round: Rasul Douglas
4th round: Mack Hollins, Donnel Pumphrey
5th round: Shelton Gibson, Nate Gerry
6th round: Elijah Qualls

13) 2014: Jordan Matthews had a few solid seasons before going to the Bills in the trade that brought the Eagles Ronald Darby, a starting corner on the Super Bowl team. He came back a couple times and even caught a touchdown in the playoff loss to the Saints in 2018. Other than that? Only Watkins and Allen were even still here in 2017 and both were deep backups. Smith only played about 400 snaps in three seasons. The entire draft class started only 88 games in an Eagles uniform.

1st round: Marcus Smith
2nd round: Jordan Matthews
3rd round: Josh Huff
4th round: Jaylen Watkins
5th round: Taylor Hart, Ed Reynolds
7th round: Beau Allen

I hear you. But as I explained, I don't judge drafts by isolated picks. I judge it by the whole bowl of soup. What did we get out of it? It matters nothing to me that the first round pick failed and our third round pick was a big success. I want hits out of the draft because that's all that matters. It doesn't matter what rounds they come from. So its tough for me not to like a draft where they get Terry, Montez Sweat, Holcomb. Three bonafide starters. One of whom is elite. The other who is-was very good. And the third solid. If someone said B plus, I get that. But tough for me to not to look fondly on that draft even with the Haskins miss. And this is coming from a dude who really really really didn't want Haskins (RIP) before that draft and posted a ton about it at the time. And hated that pick in real time.
