Hearing Keim’s latest pod, seems like implication is they have had some level of conversation with Miller, Smith & Clowney because he went out of his way to say they haven’t contacted Judon and another guy.

If we can afford it, I’d love to bring both Clowney and Smith here. Clowney/Smith/Wise/Armstrong/JJB is a solid group. No star but deep like the Eagles rotation last year

For me, I'd love in this order

1. Clowney
2. V. Miller
3. Z. Smith

I'd be happy with any of them for different reasons. Clowney because IMO he's the most complete edge of the three at this stage of their careers. Von Miller because at least according to PFF metrics he was the biggest menace of the three as a pure pass rusher on some key metrics and plays big in the post season. Z. Smith because he had the most sacks among these players.

He was hoping to stay close to him with Carolina. Since that didn't happen, with his success in Baltimore and the rise of Washington, I'd say they are the teams with the inside on track on signing him. It doesn't hurt that we have a few coaches he is familiar with either. He likes big contracts so hopefully we get Terry signed and create some more cap space if we plan to move into the Clowney sweepstakes.

Clowney I watched a game and was wowed by him as a run defender. He's been elite on that front in his career, according to PFF not as good last year, but watching him chase down a back from yards behind crossing to the other side of the field got my attention, our guys don't do that. His pass rush looked decent, too.

As for Z. Smith, don't love that he got shut down from Brandon Coleman in the playoffs, no sacks in 4 out of his last 5 games. But, he's been a consistent player throughout his career. Good get. I've not watched him.

As for V. Miller. PFF has him ranked top 10 in some key metrics. That's what got my attention. And he's been a beast in the post season throughtout his career. But I've not watched him.

Brandon Coleman also nullified Trey Henderson. All things considered, he did a pretty fine job. Eh... that was on the guard (or my faulty memory) But seriously, do you remember if Coleman was on the field that play? I really don't remember. I know he was splitting snaps with Lucas that game.

IIRC Coleman had a shoulder injury that kept him out during the preseason. Newton had the foot surgeries. If Coleman did I must have missed that.

Nope. Faulty memory on my part. I knew he missed he preseason. Mixed the two up.

I'd imagine Z Smiths numbers if he played opposite Hutchinson for a year would have been much higher. Von Miller had Espinoza and Rousseau to keep OC busy

Miller’s pass rush grade there is nice. I guess he’s the guy if we are looking for a pass rush specialist. Not sure he’d be into a part time passing down role though? Nice to see Armstrong top 20! And there’s still a little upside based on age to improve from there I suppose.

Clowney seems the easy choice for an every/most down starter. I think it was you who brought up that right now we THINK the run D is much better, but with Clowney in the mix we would KNOW it. Pass rush would remain a question, but if the run D is stout with good coverage and some good blitzers (which think we have) we can be ok with a mediocre pass rush up front. Hopefully the Quinn/Whitt combo can show some creativity!

Yeah right now they are banking on guys who have the size to be run stoppers but haven't been that hot of it of late judging by reputation and PFF scores. Clowney has been a beast against the run for much of his career.

I'm out on Smith and Trey. I'd be happy with either Clowney or Von, but happier with both.

I think Kinlaw negates us going after Clowney which blows.

I think he was and has been misvalued by the draft media. If I compare him to last year’s prospects, I feel he was better than Fautanu, Morgan and Guyton. There is also an argument to be made that he was a superior prospect to Mims due to having shown more (although Mims clearly has the much higher ceiling)

I think he's sort of billed by the draft media as a rich man Anton Harrison type -- more of a finesse-smooth pass blocker than a physical road grader type. And I think that's why he got plenty of liking from the draft media but not a lot of love. I notice that the real physical tackles everything being equal tend to get more love from them.

But i do think Conerly can beef up. He's a young prospect. And personally especially with our QB, I value pass protect over run blocking. Not that Conerly is a bad run blocker. He can move and get to the 2nd level. But he doesn't sustain blocks for long and he rarely bulldozes guys. But I think that's fine. I think he's good enough with the run game. And he has very high intangibles with the work ethic to keep getting better.

I love the pick. And i love that Peters is determined to build a strong O line -- especially succeeding Ron who didn't seem to give a rats behind about the O line.

Digesting Keim's podcast from the weekend about the defense -- he hits Von Miller, Z. Smith, Clowney as possibilities. He spent a little more time on Von Miller and even referenced that he has of late. It could mean nothing. But sometimes Keim's attention on this player or that has meaning. With Miller, he mentioned one of the things I did which is the value of his postseason experience. He referenced that he heard that Quinn brought Dwight Freeney to Atlanta late in his career and even though he didn't have a big season Quinn valued Freeney's experience and what that brought to the locker room.

I am still good on any of those three. I prefer Clowney. And then Miller by a hair over Z. Smith. But I'd love to have any one of those three.
