Everyone says Clowney was surprisingly good for them, but he's been on 6 teams in 7 years. Something's weird. Why is nobody ever trying to bring him back.
I haven't followed his career much but I think he gets banged up and injured a lot. He hasn't had many big years at least sack wise either.
I recall coming out of college the only knocks on him were that he had a thin lower body, had a number of injuries and wasn't great with contain.
He at least had some incredible skills and is worth a look judging by the other available options.
Clowney has ranged from being an elite run defender to good run defender. He'd easily be the best run defender on this D line by reputation. I talked about it some on the FA thread showing a clip on it.
He's sort of be a rich man's D. Wise. Easily the better run defender than Wise by reputaton. A slightly better pass rusher. He's never killed it as a sack guy in the NFL, and teams have paid him on his potential on that front which hasn't been realized. He's supposed to be a good locker room guy so I don't think its anything off the field.

Clowney now lands on the open market relatively late in the process — but still with time to find his new opportunity.
“I got more in the tank than people think,” Clowney said. “I just keep bringing it, and they’re gonna keep counting me out.”
Clowney, 32, had 5.5 sacks in 14 games last season. He has played in 140 career games, with 127 starts. Beyond his 58 career sacks, Clowney has a history of high performance in one specific area that has yet to be recognized as an official statistic. It’s called “eff up the play” by Simms — who (to no surprise) often uses a word other than “eff” when citing it whenever the topic comes up on PFT Live.
The challenge will become finding the sweet spot between Clowney’s financial expectations and the potential offers to come from other teams. For now, other teams would be wise to take a close look at his 2024 film, and then to decide whether there’s a spot in the lineup for a player who has a history of creating havoc, even if that havoc doesn’t always manifest itself on the stat sheet.

He may have more value to us than to other teams. A great run stopper with a little pass rush juice might be extremely useful to this team in particular.
I think so. Mainly because not just the pass rush, the run stopping ability for the D line feels very wild cardish.
If the idea is the window is open now, I'd be aggressive.

I think the elephant in the room explaining why we didn't draft an Edge.... we addressed "edge" in free agency. We targeted DL / old school stout DEs. Think Charles Mann or a 3-4 end like Phil "I almost broke Payton's neck" Daniels. We are built to stop one man. Charles Saquon Fucking Barkley.
I am not sure if its true or not, but I would swear we rushed 5 guys more than any other team I saw. This may help explain some of Fowler's spike in sacks. Regardless, building a defense that plans on rushing 5 a ton doesnt need an elite end that gets schooled in the run game. More pass rushers means you need better DBs and sure enough we drafted another physical corner.

I am fairly sure if they feel pass rush is a problem they can pick up a good FA for a low price

Yeah watching them look like nervous nellies hoping that Forbes "falls" to their pick and trying to trade up if need be to get their man -- brings home that Rivera era to me.

He has long arms and big hands for a guy his size. I can see him having being a real impact player down the line.
I don’t remember who was saying that Lane doesn’t, “look” as fast as his timed speed. He looks damn fast here.
Also, in that McShay review of our draft, McShay LOVES Lane. McShay had the nugget that no WR,in the entirety of the last decade, has posted a better combined 40, long jump, and 3 cone.

We are so fixated on 'measureables' in the modern era. Not going to try and argue that the numbers don't matter - because someone's raw physical ability obviously does matter. But I think we are often too focused on them, and spend too little time looking at actual football skills, drive, smarts, other factors that equate to a really good football player. Sometimes I wonder looking at some of our franchises former great players if they would have ever gotten a chance if they were starting out in an era of 40 times and RAS scores? Would they ever have gotten drafted or signed or have the opportunity to shine on the field.

I mean we the fans probably are too focused on them, but I think the League collectively gets it right 95% of the time.

Sure. Maybe. And there are some players today like that. And it’s a different era. Even back then, Sure, the cowboys had 3 offensive stars. But, they built that SB era team drafting speed, speed, speed.
And I also think there is a cumulative effect. When you walk your team out there and everybody has speed, that’s really hard for another team to deal with. Eventually, there are going to be explosive plays that break.
On a different note, I agree with Trevor Sikema here. This is a short clip cut from a longer video. In the extended cut, he says he likes us as Super Bowl contenders next year after one more offseason. And I agree. We have a SB QB, and maybe offense, but not a SB roster. I think one more impact FA and draft class, and a year for our young guys to season, and next year, we could be a truly dominant roster, like the Eagles.
