The 2025 Draft Thread

You love your tight ends and are the TE guru :). I can totally get on board with Loveland at #29. I think we'll need to wait on the combine to learn more but, as of now, who are some tight ends you like that may go rounds 2-5 that you would like for us from a schematic fit standpoint?

Thanks. I got to admit I am behind on watching TEs partly because I suspect we aren't taking one at least early. Seems like the draft is so loaded at the D line and running back and decent at CB -- and coupled with this can be a SB run now that I suspect they aim elsewhere. But I did happen to watch Warren and Loveland both whom I love. Deeper in the draft, I've watched Ferguson a little and I liked what I saw but need to watch much more of him and the others.

I am trying to cram as much as I can at DE, DT, RB with a little CB before the combine. But eventually I'll get to the TEs.

As for RB, I love Hampton. I know that's an obvious one but wow is he a complete back. Does it all including pass protect and catch the ball. Power and plenty enough speed. Special. I really like Kaleb Johnson who to me is a slightly poor man's version of Hampton.

I thought I was a big Henderson guy until reading some of the commentary on this thread. Some are apparently even bigger on him than me. But I like him a lot. I wonder about Henderson's durabilty and his own coaches leaked to the media he works better as a by committee back. I like him in pass protect but IMO he's slightly overrated on that front. I'd go Hampton by a hair over him in pass protect. But yeah as a by committee back ala Gibbs with Detriot he's intriguing. Speed kills. He's not IMO as elusive as Gibbs. He's more straight line speed but he has plenty of it, more elusive IMO vertically than horizontally.

Speaking of speed if Henderson is gone where they are picking, I love Sampson. I wish he was bigger though and he needs to address his fumble issues especially lol if he has to play against Philly. Also in that third-5th round range. I like RJ Harvey who I've talked about some. He is explosive. Ditto B. Tuten who reminds me of a rich man's Keaton Mitchell who I liked back in the day as a late round back and went undrafted.

I dig Neal and Giddens but I wish they had more had breakaway speed. But both are elusive as heck especially Giddens. And Neal is screaming with intangibles so fits the locker room culture. J. James IMO sort of a slightly poor man's version of both. All three to me have medium level speed. Not bad. But nothing special. But will see at the combine, sometimes I am surprised.

Even though I prefer speed, and Skattebo feels so cool that maybe he's now uncool -- prospect fatigue, etc -- but its tough for me to ignore how tough a runner he is. Baller type. Tone setter. In ways that Robinson is not. But what puts him on the table for me is his pass catching ability.

That's my RB cliff notes for now.

I am going deep into the DTs. Some talk up the edge spot being insane but IMO the DTs are just if not more stacked in this draft. I am in the camp that Allen and Payne's best days are behind them. Payne's career year feels especially with hindsight driven by his quest for a payday considering how overt he was about it including the money signs he would make that season when he had a sack along with stuff leaked about him that he's not the hardest worker in the world but that season brought out his drive, etc. As for Payne considering this is sort of a contract year for him, you can dislodge out of his contract in 2026 much easier maybe that would spur him? Am not saying that money alone is the issue with Payne but it feels like a driver as part of the soup with him. Allen I think puts everything he's got into the spot but wonder how much he has left? At a minimum Allen doesn't seem to be at his peak.

At DT, who knows what the heck we are going do. Trade, release, bring in FA's, perhaps a NT/run stopper/space eater type. It could be easy to fill a slot through FA but if they took a guy like Tyleik Williams, seems like a good fit to loosen up the gaps for the rest of our defenders.

Not that it really matters, but if we get Ebuka for the slot does McCaffrey have the ability to be groomed for the outside. I want him to work out. I loved the preseason hype stories of him finding out when Jayden arrived in camp and so got there at the same time so they could watch film together and the kid seems like a good kid.

Maybe. He played some Z last year, too. Something seemed off in year 1 for Luke as he seemed to get if anything less opportunities as the season progressed. But hopefully, it was just rookie growing pains. I think they can easily though find a Z receiver in FA without breaking the bank.

Tyleik can stop the run. Payne and Allen had horrible PFF run defense scores. And look I know PFF isn't perfect but that didn't exactly feel like some odd outlier point. There is a lot of focus on the edges as for giving up big run plays but we were also gashed right up the A gap, too.

You hear before we play for example Vita Vea good luck running against him and that defense. Who is that guy for us? It's definitely not Payne or Allen.

Paying Allen-Payne 20 plus million to anchor this defense has been a sneaky or maybe not so sneaky big time failure.

I wonder if they'd consider at 29 if he falls that far Kenneth Grant, he's a bit raw but he's a monster. He has that Vea type potential against the run and like Vea flashes some as a pass rusher, too.

Absolutely! Our DL really needs a T Williams type inside and a disruptive Edge that understands and can handle their gap/contain assignments.

Grant would be perfect, I just don't see AP taking a DT in the 1st and I think that's where you must take Grant. With TW I was thinking with our 2nd rounder.

Maybe they look for a later round run stuffer but this would be using the strength of the draft to their advantage.

In a way, I was more disappointed in Luke than Sinnott. I tought when Noah went out that Luke would emerge. I did understand that with the team winning and in a playoff race that rooies would get less developmental playing time. With Sinnott that never really happened because Ertz grabbed onto his role and became important and Bates stopped dropping passes (plus, he's a superior blocker.) However, Luke had an opportunity. It wasn't until the playoffs that Dyami started to shine and while OZ did step up there was still room for a receiver to show up and steal playing time. I am glad though that Luke solidified the return game and showed something.

I hope he can take several strides with another offseason under his belt.

Yeah, pundits and writers always seem to want to give Payne and Allen a pass, but the middle hasn't been great since they've gotten here. At first, we thought they were doing the job but it was the lack of linebacking that made the middle weak. We can't make that excuse anymore with Luvu and Wagner playing at a high level. So, there's something wrong with Payne and Allen. They just don't get it done in the run game. I'm not sure they ever really have.

Watching the Eagles dominate with their DTs makes me wonder though. This is a special DT class. Payne and Allen alas aren't special.

I am not saying am locked into any spot in the draft including DT but especially if they trade down some and can pick up a third round pick -- it seems almost a crime not to pull both an edge and DT from this class. They can rebuild their D line really quickly with a good draft.

I am focused some on Grant and T. Williams is also of that brand because they can play 0-1 and stop the run, Alfred Collins, etc while having enough pass rushing chops. So many 3 technique tackles in this draft -- not that we can't use that too. Penetrators ala Norman-Lott, Nolen, etc.

This regime has been focusing heavily on more athletic type players so I can see them looking at the penetraters but they must be capable of handling run duties. They can find a large space eater late in the draft if they wish to use more rotational play. The rough part of that is when the offense goes fast-paced without being able to make personnel changes.

I like Revel too but I'm a bit worried he may not have the football IQ. He wasn't more highly recruited coming out of HS due to academic issues and had to go to JUCO and is still a raw player. Mikey showed us this year what a guy with high level football IQ but non ideal traits can do

Was not aware of that - good point. Just going by what I see on YouTube as per but if he can put it together he could great.

I don’t really follow college ball. And I can’t be bothered doing deep dives into hundreds of prospects almost all of which my team will never draft.

But every year I develop crushes on 1-2 guys.

And I love the way Henderson runs in that video. He has exceptional vision… very good at taking angles and using his blockers… 1 cut and plant style… no wasted steps. Bursts through the line. Knows how to get skinny in tight quarters. Has great speed… just not super elite. Plays with aggression and breaks tackles…. but doesn’t look for contact. Seems to be a willing and very good pass blocker.

Sign me up.

Darn DH, sorry I missed your reply. I'm still getting used to the site. Yeah, I only did those dives mostly for our ES Mock events each year and I've no life :) Good to see you still around friend and thanks to you and all else for your contributions to ES. It brought a lot of joy in many fan's lives.

And look I know PFF isn't perfect
FYI when I switched boards last year I made a solemn oath to let my ranting and raving about PFF die. So you can quote PFF without the caveat and not expect a tirade from me.

Jay Gruden is still a know nothing putz though. (This is not an invitation for a Jay conversation, just a little humor on a Sunday morning.

:p

Btw, when I get myself organized, we’re going to do a “who would you have taken” thread right after the draft in the form of some contest or another and there will be some small prize at the end of the season to see who’s draft might have been best.

I did something like this at ES a couple of years ago. I think it was taken up by others after. The basic premise will be to select the player you would have taken at our spot with available players available.

I’ll compile a list and then provide updrafts on players throughout the season and then we will see who could actually replace Adam Peters.

Keep an eye out as we get closer to the draft. Obviously, unless you have a DeLorean Time Machine, we can’t start this until after the draft.

This draft is deeper than I realized earlier with solid contributors between the mid-to-late 1st right into the top of the 3rd (depending on the position).

I am of the belief AP will not be making trades that take away draft capital. I now also see him looking for that short trade back from 29. That additional 3rd rounder would become another nice piece added to APs team build.

I initially wanted no part of a 1st round trade back. If they do, I don't want it far from the very to of the 2nd

Yeah especially picking in the late first, I endorse trading down. Depth is really strong at DE, DT, RB and to some extent TE. Hoping maybe a team wants to trade up for Shough or Dart or maybe a surprise faller, etc.

Can we draft a quality run-stuffer (inside) and an outside (DE/Edge) help in this draft between 2-4 Rds (assuming a trade here obviously)? What are your thoughts? Seems like a deep draft for both DT and DE.

Yes definitely. Probably need to go Edge first. It is very deep at DL, DT especially.

I really appreciate all of the work that people do and all of your Insight and comments. It really helps me with free agency and the draft. I'm not the guy to study and do all of the homework.

I appreciate this board greatly and the fact that we got the band got back together makes it even better

Thanks y'all!
