The 2025 Draft Thread

Yeah, the draft thread in the other forum was always a highlight. Hope Going Commando finds himself over here as well. His draft insights were always top notch. With our expected cap space, I think we target CB in FA and let BSJ walk. With Wylie a pending FA after next season, Lucas & Scott FAs, Tackle is a critical need. I'd expect our 2nd rounder to be devoted to it IMO. Regarding the first round, I think we take BPA sans QB. Jeanty will be long gone and this is a deep RB class. The lost mid round picks from the Lattimore trade stings a bit, but that early Miami 3rd should net us a good player. Peters reportedly wanted to trade up for Brian Thomas Jr last year, and that would have been sick.
 
I think we have very specific needs at the moment, that can be (and should be) addressed in FA to the best of our ability. We’ll have guys wanting to come to DC now, but we need to make sure we’re choosing the correct targets.

Right now our needs:

CB1 or 2
WR1 or 2
OT
OG
Safety
Edge

I add Edge with a caveat: Armstrong and Fowler have been excellent. We need to make sure we have them tied up for a few years. And, of course, if a stud edge is the BPA where we are drafting there is always a temptation to pull the trigger.

I also think we can use a back. I like all three of our backs, actually. And I don’t want to part with any of them. But at least one seems to be hurt on a weekly basis. I could make the case that we carry four backs and if, for some reason they are all healthy, let Ekeler get some reps in the slot. A guy like Jeanty would be a huge get if he’s available in the second… but I don’t think he will be.

I think we need to be really invested in rookie tackles, receivers and corners. All premium positions in the NFL and also all happen to be needs.

If you think of our rise like the Lions, instead of the Texans, adding a stud RB amd stud Y TE is what puts our offense over the top.

FA, we can add studs like Lawrence, Ward, Greenlaw for the defense and lean offense in the draft.

1rst- Jeanty/ Egbuka/ Loveland
2nd- Warren/ Tre Harris
3rd- Fannin/ Ayomanor/ Lawson

I'm curious about Sinnott. I think he's coming around a bit as he's running more routes now. I'm not saying he's LaPorta, but he may make a new TE unnecessary. The FO will know regardless. I don't plan on needing one or even really weighting one as a BPA considerably, but I can see it if Ertz goes especially.

Sinnott was my favorite player in last years draft, so I'm still high on him, but there's a place for him and a true Y TE. Having two good pass catching TEs seems to fit out base personnel as well. Kind of like the Ravens.

Lamar, Henry, Andres, Likely, Flowers
Daniels, Jeanty, Sinnott, Fannin, Terry

I think that's winning football. Especially if we can add a guy like Ayomanor or Tre Harris in the 2nd.

I think it comes down to receivers.

Right now, Ertz is our second most reliable receiving option. Noah Brown is third.

If we can get a stud receiver, the need for a high end receiving tight end lessens, especially if Sinnott grows.

If we can't, though, we need the tight end to be a pass catching monster.

Right now we just don't have enough really good options. Noah Brown should be WR3/Pass Option 4. He'd still likely be just as productive, if not moreso.

We need another receiver and either Ertz to return or Sinnott to step up.

Or we need a stud tight end and Sinnott to step up or Ertz to return (and be in form)

Been casually watching some players for this upcoming draft.

James Pierce, Jr - Tennessee - EDGE - Is a good pass rusher but he is a little bit on the light side. Pulling guards light him up and as a pass rusher he prefers to be in a wide 9. Good athlete, but not tremendously explosive. I don't think he's a guy you'd want in the first round as he is more of a specialist. Of course, he has talent and can develop some size and power so I'm not down on him. I just don't think he's a round 1 guy.

Abdul Carter - Penn State - EDGE/LB - I think he is a guy more suited to the Frankie Luvu/Micah Parsons role. Not a pure edge. And I'm not sure using round 1 capital on that is a good move for us as I don't know if he is game changing right away.

Princely Umanmielen - Ole Miss - EDGE - I think this is more the style of guy we want. Long, explosive and quick. But he doesn't have the body of work in college yet to justify... but I need to spend more time with him to get a good feel.

Mykel Williams - Georgia - EDGE - Lacks the explosion off the ball that you want to see. The best way for a DL to be effective is their get off. It's the most important piece of the puzzle. He has a good motor, but again, I'm not sure he's a difference maker on day 1 and therefore going to be hard to be the BPA.

I'm not enamored with the edges so far, but just starting to really watch guys.
 
Some receiver thoughts:

Isaiah Bond, Texas: Smaller receiver body. Good speed and hands. Was productive at Alabama for a sophomore target last year. Only had 26 receptions for 435 yards for Texas this year. Draft sites love this guy. I think he has a ton of potential but he's not a guy I look at and think "first round prospect" (so far this is a reoccuring theme with this class).

Emeka Egbuka, Ohio State: I hate that I am saying this because I hate Ohio State. But I think this guy is almost a run to the podium guy for us if we are in position to take him in the first. He has good size, great hands, good route variety and explosive. He reminds me of a guy who wears #17 for the Commanders right now.

Luther Burden, Mizzou: Makes a lot of spectacular plays. Tracks the ball well, plays with a good base. I don't think he's on the board for us... He's probably WR3 behind Hunter and Teta.

Tre Harris, Ole Miss: Big body receiver. He runs kind of... robotic. But he has a big frame and a large catch radius. He plays with a relentless motor. This is probably a round 2 guy if we don't get Egbuka.
 
OT:

I don't think the top guys are there (Banks, Campbell).

Wyatt Milum, West Virginia - I'm not sold, necessarily. Seems to move well and has good balance. But he doesn't seem to have that lock down power or explosion that I'd want in a round 1 tackle. But I think he's a solid player.

Aireontae Ersery, Minnesota - This guy has everything you could want in a tackle. Power, strength, size, balance, overall athleticism as far as agility goes. My question on him is: Is he fast enough? I know we don't usually think of linemen as runners, but you do need to get downfield and he seems a little bit heavy footed. But everything else is solid with this guy.

So far, I'm not sold on a lot of the mid to late first round talents, but in the Edge, WR, Tackle areas for me so far it's:

1. Emeka Egbuka, WR, Ohio State
2. Aireontae Ersery, OT, Minnesota
3. Princely Umanmielen, Edge, Ole Miss
 
ap has drafted good so far.no reason to think he will not in 2025.i have beathard type of faith in him.

I think we could actually use a good old fashioned thumping RB/FB. JD5s speed vs a true thumper on option plays would add another dimension to dictating a defenses personnel

Not opposed to that. But I think that’s exactly what Robinson is. I think a second home run hitter is just as dangerous if not more so.

I could see it either way. But I think we need another back. But I also think McNichols needs to continue to accumulate touches. So it can’t be at his expense.

I think the best option is Ekeler playing more of a hybrid role and getting in space more and letting BRob/McNichols and Rook cook.
 
Dane Brugler put out his new Top 50. None of the QB's are running away with it and all carry large risk. Makes me think we could trade down out of the 1st for a team that wants to trade back into it to roll the dice on a QB.
