This is the clearinghouse for the Week 1 Washington Commanders/New York Giants autopsy.

What are your next day ‘truths’?
 
I still can’t figure out if the passing game is hurting, but it’s clear Daniels can be impacted by the pass rush. I still think he did a good job along with our offensive line against possibly the best defensive line in the league. I’m interested to see how the line gels through the year, but it’s gonna be hard to see immediate growth since they’re gonna be seriously tested again on Thursday against GB.
 
My morning thought is that this was this is what good teams do. Giants were supposed to have a nasty defense especially on the line. Well, we handled that line pretty well in the run game. The passing game looked out of sync, but that's not surprising since so many of our players never practiced. On defense, except for two drives we were in command the whole game. So, even though the game felt a little tense at the end, the Giants were never really a threat. We were just better even though we looked rusty.

Too many drops.
Too many penalties (some of them were sketchy.)
Throws weren't as sharp as they could be.

I think we will get better from here, but was actually very pleased with our D. The secondary definitely played better. The run D definitely played better. Now, you could say that's because we played the Giants, but we couldn't stop anyone's run game last year and raretly could stop anyone's pass game. So, it was a promising start for the D.

Thinking about the contrast of the week leading up to the game:

Oh that Giants Dline is scary. How in the world are they going to keep 5 upright? We're primed to get beat/blown out...yada..yada..yada.

Other than the couple of sacks where 5 held the ball way too long (and even got up basically saying "My bad"), Tunsil and Co did a nice job neutralizing the vaunted Giant front.

Promising game for the defense. Did yeoman's work stopping the run, put good pressure on Wilson and the secondary played well considering what they had around here last year....nice improvement.

Going to be interesting to see how they gel over the next three-four weeks as the rust was prevalent yesterday.
 
Goskins10 & I watched in his new home with the ultimate set-up and his kitties (that are beautiful & awesome!).

Penalties were ridiculous. JD5 was throwing just a tad behind receivers. Defense was great, cuz Wilson had nothin' all day...the only extended drive still only ended with a FG.

I worry about Thursday's game, short week...but GB is having to do the same, so...

I'm okay. :cheer2:
 
Yesterday showed clearly that Jonathan Allen was a good local kid and a try hard athletic guy, but absolutely the definition of a "tweener" in today's NFL. He got pushed around in the run game. Newton is quick but also not a huge guy. The difference in the defense with Kinlaw in there vs Allen was special. His mass freed Payne and the LBs up to wreck things.

I didn't hear Newton's name called once. Did he even play?

Amos and a healthier, more confident Lattinore were huge too.

Lots of weapons on offense, eliminate drops, a bit of early season rust (misses) from JD and penalties and this offense is special.

Didn't hear Von Millers name called, did see him out there. Interested to hear thoughts on him yesterday.
 
I’ve commented that I felt like the scheme/philosophy on D last year was likely a big part of our inability to stop the run (light boxes combined with blitzing to protect our corners). Time will tell - the Giants OL ain’t good - but it was good to see us routinely rush only 4, still get pressure, and stop the run so effectively.

I think Whitt’s in a much better position to succeed without essentially having one hand tied behind his back.
 
JCM was exactly what I hoped he would be, pretty much what I expected. We've needed a back like this for a long time. I didn't expect Conely to lock down a player like Burns but boy he really struggled and they had to help him out which limits the offense. Something to keep an eye on. Jayden was off, I've grown spoiled and that was really disappointing. He missed Terry badly on a play that could have ended the game early. I just wasn't that happy at the end, which is crazy I know. But we should have destroyed that team yesterday.
 
Conerly doesn’t really get a reprieve until Week 4. He has Parsons and Gary (who is no slouch) this week and then Crosby in Week 3 to contend with.

I expect him to struggle this Thursday with so little time to prepare but he might impress us Week 3 with a lot of time to prepare
 
Truth is Jayden puts this team at ease! He overthrew Terry by 8 yards that probably would have been a TD, Then he started laughing and smiling and so did I :ROFLMAO: I think the entire team feels that the exact same way. Positive confident energy is contagious!
 
I wasn't smiling and laughing after that play, I was really disappointed at the missed opportunity.

This is an underrated facet. Like literally seeing Jayden makes me feel better about whatever game situation we're in, and I imagine it's the same for his teammates.
 
Conerly is not ready for prime time. Green Bay now has Parsons stamped in concrete to line up over our rookie right tackle all night on Thursday.

Rust is real. Declining to play so many of our starters in preseason games showed, and now they're stuck with a short week to try shaking off the rest of that rust before playing a SB contender. Bad decision by Quinn.

Bill is real. The rookie RB looked smooth, quick, fast, and strong and should get more than 10 carries against the Packers.

Kingsbury played it too safe for big chunks of the second half. This is not an offense designed to protect a lead, it's an aggressive attacking scheme, and they didn't look comfortable at all trying to play conservatively. Keep slashing.
 
As bad as the Giants looked we should've won by 30, first team offense definitely looked a lil rusty or off a bit but that will improve. Pleased with the defensive effort but again not so sure that's not just a reflection of how bad the Giants are, might be especially with Russell Wilson looking like he forgot how to play. We will need better focus overall if we intend to hang with GB in GB.

Everyone remembers the sack, but on the whole he did alright for his debut (did have a couple holding calls in addition to the below)...

The good news is we can give Conerly some help as we did Coleman last year via both protections and play calls. But now we can leave Tunsil on an island as opposed to either leaving Wylie on his own, or having to help both tackles. I’ll add that between Ertz, Samuel, Eckler and Lane, I like our chances at getting the ball out quickly.
It’ll still be a tough matchup though.
